QUESTION AND ANSWER,
- the common wonderings of fish & chips
- the common wonderings of fish & chips
✧ WHY DOES F&C ONLY GO UP TO THE TWELFTH DOCTOR?
- Initially, Fish & Chips took on the idea that the Eleventh Doctor should have been the Doctor's last life and incarnation, as highlighted by the serial "Time of the Doctor" and hinted in the ones before it. However, it didn't feel quite right, or fair, to halt at Matt Smith's portrayal, as the cameo of his future incarnation's intense eyebrows foreshadowed a Doctor much more ruthless, and the following adventures of the Twelfth Doctor proved that there were more stories to be told, showing the Doctor is willing to go to heights never seen before, and that even his current companion's arc had not quite ended. This, coupled with the fact that the Twelfth Doctor's tenure seems to embody everything we love about Doctor Who and brings the series full-circle with a unbridled combination of both the classic and modern eras, it only felt natural to borrow from the formerly foreshadowed elements of the Doctor's running slowly coming to an end as an excuse to continue on Peter Capaldi's performance.
- Please note that we do not dislike, look down on, or discriminate against the Thirteenth Doctor or Jodie Whitaker in any way. F&C just chose to omit her, her series, her companions, and adventures simply because we feel that, once the reigns of writing was withheld from Steven Moffat, that the series of Doctor Who took a very unexpected and unprecedented turn in writing, portrayal, and story-line, and having any incarnations come after Capaldi would conflict with our current synopsis and what we consider to be canon on-site.
✧ SO DOES F&C HAVE A PLOT? HOW DO YOU ACCOUNT FOR WHAT HAPPENED IN SERIES 10?
- Unless you count the Twelfth Doctor being at the end of his regeneration cycle as "plot" material, we do not consider ourselves plot-oriented, and purposefully have an absence of anything over-arching or strictly defining for the site. This is to allow for flexibility and make things more fun and least confusing as possible for our members.
- As far as Series 10 goes, everything still happened, up until the last few minutes of the finale. Instead of seeing the Doctor glowing with golden regeneration energy, we follow the idea that the Twelfth Doctor did not begin to regenerate at the end of it, and that his meeting with the First Doctor never happened -- that the events in Twice Upon A Time never occurred. After being rejuvenated by Bill's tears, his regeneration was halted, and he most likely has assumed that she died in the war against the Cybermen and that Missy left with her former incarnation. He has now taken it upon himself to continue travelling alone since he awoke inside the TARDIS.
✧ DOES THAT MEAN F&C IS PRIMARILY FOCUSED ON THE TWELFTH DOCTOR AND THE MODERN REBOOT OF THE SERIES?
- While the site does technically declare that the Twelfth Doctor is the current Doctor in our world of roleplay, we don't want that to be the main focus of the site, nor do we want modern Doctors and companions to necessarily take precedence because of this. We want to encourage all incarnations of the Doctor and all companions, and all series -- Classic as well as NuWho up until Series 10. We aim to have a nice mix between the two, and actually look forward to seeing more Classic characters being applied for since that's where the series started. Ideally, our dream is to have every canon position filled -- even the spin-off series characters -- so we can have a big Doctor Who sandbox. When it comes down to it, though, we just implore members to apply for the role they want and the one they feel most confident writing -- whether that is one from the old series or from the new is up to you.
✧ DOES THAT MEAN THE CHARACTERS ARE ONLY RESTRICTED TO THEIR SPECIFIC TIMELINES?
- No, of course not! Characters can be played within the span of their own timeline and life-span, absolutely, but also with new adventures added to or thrown between what we have already seen in the series -- which would allow Fish & Chips to have a more cohesive and developmental timeline for all characters involved. Feel free to use the properties and hijinks of time and space at your disposal. Even though characters may be more likely to have stories in their own times(and certain boards, for that matter), many of them are capable of spanning across multiple time-lines and being in multiple boards, given that many characters running around in the Whoniverse have access to some sort of time-travelling device(they may be travelling in a TARDIS, vortex manipulator, or dimension canon, for example), or simply could be living through some span of the Doctor's life, and therefore be played across various boards(Sarah Jane is a good example of this, since we see her first with the Third and Fourth Doctors, and then later with the Tenth and Eleventh Doctors -- But, who's to say that she didn't meet the incarnations in-between after the events of Hand Of Fear or before she developed her team in the Sarah Jane Adventures? The same could go for Jo Grant. Even Clara Oswald could technically be played through all the boards in the form of her 'splinters', and Jack Harkness and Ashildr has certainly lived through enough time to encounter many different people). There is a lot of lee-way when it comes to time and space travel, especially when it comes to Doctor Who and his companions, and we like to play around with what could-have-been, what is, and what has already come to pass, how it affects characters, and how it contributes to the fact that, here on F&C, even though there is a determined end to all things, the travelling and adventures never really end. So even though Martha Jones is seen to have become part of UNIT and married Mickey Smith at the end of the series, Martha's writer would be free to expand on that and write out her life after leaving the Doctor, but also would be capable of writing Martha while she is still travelling with the Doctor, or have her take up a whole new adventure/encounter with another one of his incarnations or a whole different character entirely. The same logic applies to any character on-site -- as long as you don't gravitate away from the facts presented in the series, you can add and extend and include extra stories into your character's "timeline of events", as long as it makes sense.
✧ WHY IS THE MASTER AND MISSY TWO SEPARATE ROLES IF THEY ARE THE SAME PERSON?
- Up until Missy, the Master was always male and, unlike the incarnations of the Doctor who span consecutive episodes and portray significant characterization, the Master is always different, is always scheming against the Doctor, usually with a different face, and never stays for too long. Contrarily, Missy seems to be a reoccurring incarnation for the span of the Twelfth (and even a sliver of the Eleventh) Doctor's life, and seems to have significant traits, and even goals and alliances, that differ from her former incarnations. This discrepancy, coupled with the fact that she is female, lends to enough differential to justify Missy and The Master as being, essentially, the same person, but two different roles with two different personalities and potential alignments. The same reasoning is applied where the differing incarnations of the Doctor, and perhaps even Romana, are concerned.
✧ ARE THE DOCTOR WHO AUDIOS, NOVELLAS, COMICS, WEB-CASTS, AND THE CHARACTERS IN THEM CONSIDERED CANON ON F&C?
- The audios aren't concrete canon, but they can be considered canon as part of a character's backstory if the character in question doesn't have a lot go by in terms of the television series(as with the War Doctor, The Eighth Doctor, etc). Some of the Big Finish can even be mixed in with the Doctor Who series canon for major characters to make for a more cohesive backstory or more detailed characterization, if you choose to "mix and match" the two, as long as the canon history lines up with what is in the tv series. Characters that only appear in the Big Finish audios that have met the Doctor will not be regarded as actual companions, but are still canon to the series. Instead, they will be treated more like a character from a Doctor Who tv special, who are unique in their own regard and have had an adventure or two with the Doctor, but haven't traveled with him consecutively like his on-screen companions. However, like with OC characters, that can always be changed, arranged, and expanded upon in-game.
- Fish & Chips are not counting characters or events that appear only from the Doctor Who prose, novels, comics, or web-casts/animations as a reliable canonical source on-site, nor will we be accepting characters that primarily only appear in such media(ex, we will not be accepting Anthony Williams), but members can feel free to draw inspiration and information from these media for the purpose of in-game threads, adventures, and even when making canon and original characters if they so choose.
✧ ARE TIME-TRAVELLING CANONS, LIKE THE DOCTOR, RIVER, ETC, ALLOWED TO HAVE ADDITIONAL COMPANIONS?
- Yes, Doctors and other canon time-travelers are allowed to have additional companions, but not prior to the game -- any interactions between canons and OCs or canons and other canons that are not in the TV series or spin-offs must be played out in game, and must be okay-ed by the person you are writing with. You are free to take advantage of the time between episodes that we do not see or the gaps that are alluded to, but aren't expanded upon.
✧ CAN I CREATE MY OWN OC TIMELORD/TIMELADY?
- We don't mind if you have a crack at making your own Gallifreyan, Timelord, or Timelady. However, as iterated in the rules, OC Timelords/Timeladies will be reviewed and critiqued more thoroughly than other original characters, and we expect these characters to be well-rounded and developed with promise and a backstory that doesn't conflict with or directly contradict what is presented in the series. This is not to deter you from creation, but to warn you that they will be approved sparingly, on a case-by-case basis, in which you must blow us away with your application and really put in the effort.
✧ CAN I APPLY FOR A CHARACTER WHO IS NEVER SHOWN, BUT IS MENTIONED IN THE SERIES?
- Sure! We want to stay open-minded to allow for the expansion of characters that were never elaborated on, were referenced in the series and perhaps even shown in other media (like The Corsair or the Master's/Missy's Daughter, for example). But, since there is so little information concerning such characters, we ask that you dive deep and really make them into something believable and provide any necessary gaps in biography and personality. Like OC Timelords/Ladies, they will be approved on a case-by-case basis, and reserve the right to turn down the application if we think the character wouldn't fit into the site.
✧ ARE YOU ACCEPTING CHARACTERS FROM THE DOCTOR WHO 2016 SPIN-OFF "CLASS"?
- Since Class only spanned one season and was shortly cancelled without follow-up development for characters and story-line, we believe it is best to not allow anything associated with the spin-off of Class, including the characters within it, at this time. Though this may be changed later.
