The Rockefeller family were not people you wanted to cross, John D. Rockefeller wasn’t known as a robber baron without reason. Junior was… well, something of a chip off the old block as it were, though it was a feat on its own that he stood on his own, given that his father was the richest man in America, if not the world. In any case, the Rockefeller men were singularly terrifying men with more money at their disposal than the average man, if they wanted something done, it was done.
And, he reflected, that made it rather hard for the men to pay attention to the little details of the real world.
“Mr. Rockefell…”
“It’s a goddamn war zone already, just get the damn strikers dealt with already.” That was easy for him to say, he wasn’t one of the people there. “How hard can it be to put down a strike? Even without that woman stirring things up…”
“Sir, this isn’t about the strike, there’s something else going on out there… something odd.”
“I don’t have time to worry about that when this goddamn strike is eating up company time and money, let the Baldwin-Felts men worry about it.”
“But Mr. Rockefeller sir…”
“If they can handle the strikers, they can handle some odd things.” And Junior waves him off, more focused on… whatever it is that rich men focus on when they’re not making money. He’s not quite sure honestly, it’s not like he’s ever going to have the kind of money they do to idle about with. And clearly, John D. Rockefeller Jr has bigger things to worry about than some of the very strikebreakers doing odd things that puzzle even their fellows. That he supposes, is what rich men can do, not worry one whit about something that has never affected them nor will ever affect them.

Sarah Jane Smith was sitting on the floor, comfortably leaning against one of the giant upside down biscuit mixers that spanned from floor to vaulted ceiling in the control room. In her lap was a book she'd been studying so she could ply her friend with tantalizing facts. Beside her was the extra big tool box. A a meter away, the Doctor was up to his armpits in the TARDIS tinkering away again.
She'd been helping for a while now and doing a fair job of it so he'd be more inclined to answer her. And she knew the Doctor's tools well enough, occasionally tossing a new one to him when he asked for it.
"Doctor, what I'm saying is that it's still my turn. My turn didn't count, now did it? It's not like we ever made it to the beach. Besides . . .- Besides!-" she wouldn't be interrupted. "I really think you'll like this. Hear me out. it's not shopping. I want to go hear one of the most ground breaking, world shaking women orators of all time. On Earth I mean. She organized Miners to strike for better conditions. She could talk to anybody. Judges, the ultra rich. The ultra poor. You'll like her style."
She was as of yet avoiding using the woman's name because she wanted her friend to agree before he knew how wild some of those early stump meetings could be. Just in case he was familiar. Surely with the TARDIS nearby they could pop off to safety in a pinch.

He was listening with half an ear to Sarah Jane talk and share facts out of that book of hers while he worked, between what she was saying and the low hum of the TARDIS, he didn't really need anything else to listen do. He may have been grunting his responses or only really pausing to ask her for a tool, but he was listening. His tinkering was nothing particularly important, but it was something to do, and doing his tinkering with the undercurrent of one of his favorite people talking to him was an exellent way to pass the time.
Popping up from the space where he'd been working he looks at her. "A woman who's ground breaking and obviously makes the rich and powerful nervous... clearly up your alley."
Then he points at a tool he needs. "Also sounds very dangerous, given that anyone speaking out about mistreatment on your planet has a tendency to make the powerful sorts nervous and stick the police on them. Or well paid thugs... hard to say there's much diffrence in the United States." He muses.

One of the troubles of talking the Doctor into something was that he didn't need exact dates or times to understand the tenor of a place. It was enough to know any of the circumstances for him to extrapolate whatever he was interested in.
"Come on now, Doctor . . . .she's up your alley too. And it's all a matter of timing isn't it?" Oh, how dry her tone could be when she wanted to sting his pride. "Last I checked, this is a time machine isn't it?"
Briefly, she was distracted by him aiming at a particular tool. Sarah Jane secretly enjoyed tossing them too him. The Doctor was very good at catching, but her own aim with a flung tool was as good as with a firearm. Since she didn't get to shoot things, she rather enjoyed a game of catch and toss.
"Unless you've broken the TARDIS beyond all repair again." She insinuated ever-so-casually, looking up at him through heavy lashes.

Catching the tool, he makes a gesture of mock hurt. "Sarah, you wound me." But he's grinning and his tone of voice is playful, so she knows he's not serious. The TARDIS is old, he's certain something he worked on ages ago has probably got to be looked over again...
Ducking back down to work, his voice carries to her. "Of course this is a time machine you silly ape, how else would you have met people in your past or far into the future? All of time and space is kind of included."
Then he's quiet for a few moments, working on the bit of the TARDIS that he needs to, before popping back up. "Trouble is my middle name." And he grins broadly at her. "I think we can handle what they dish out, after all, we've handled worse."

"Really?" She chuckled. "I had a few other ideas for your middle name."
She let that sink in as she sat there secretly admiring the grace with which her friend had plucked the tool out of the air. Seeming not even to look at it, but it smacking into his palm neatly none the less. Sarah Jane had the sudden urge to throw something else at him just for fun, but with a little self control she decided to wait for him to ask for something.
"You say 'ape' like Gallifreyans showed up fully formed in a cabbage patch!" She scorned. "Surely you weren't all born dressing ridiculous and spouting about mathematical anomalies. So what was it for your lot? Monkeys as well, with big ears? Or great gawking storks? Why are you always so tall?"
She was probably pushing the limits of fair play, but she'd been sitting here quite a while chucking tools at him and being supportive when she could be off listening to records or something. The 'ipod' she was still getting the hang of, but had been thrilled to find the phonograph still waiting for her in what she thought of as the 'rec' room.

"Why are you always so short?" He shoots back almost automatically in response to her shot at his height. "Of course we weren't we evolved like you apes did, maybe not exactly the same way, but it still happened. Besides, I've been short before... when I was a child. And a few regenerations back."
Then he ducks back down to continue his tinkering, not that he'll admit that to Sarah, because of course, he knows what he's doing. He's just doing it creatively... "I could say the same about your middle name, I've got a few ideas too... like nosy. And obstinate... though, that one probably also applies to me too."
The Doctor then reappears. "Pass me that wrench will you? We have shenanigans to attend to. Shennanigans and malarkey, our specialty. As well as the Irish.... best not mention the Irish to American's in that time, No Irish Need Apply."

"I'll have you know that the average hight of a human woman is 163 centimeters. I happen to be 164 centimeters. That is above average, thank you." Sarah Jane replied quite tartly, even though she was grinning. When he started waxing Irish, she got suspicious. Could he read the book she had from over there? Had she let drop too many clues already? She shut the book and flipped it over onto it's face, just in case he was fishing.
"Och. I think Time Lords evolved from space donkeys."
Sarah Jane peeked into the box. There were three things that were probably wrenches and two more things she classified as 'space stuff wrenches'. She plucked one up like she knew just what it was he wanted. This she let skitter across the floor plates between them, sending up a little spark along the way as it came in directly where his chest could be seen. She may have put a bit of heat on it, and aimed it a little too well.
Obstinate. Really.
"I'm not obstinate. I'm just determined to keep you in one piece. You'd get into a lot more 'shenanigans' without me, you know."

"Well, you always have been above average... that's you, Sarah Jane, aiming high." He replies, taking the wrench to the chest like a champ, even though it hurt. Studying the wrench, he rubs his chest where it'd hit him... trust Sarah to aim true. Always to the heart of the matter with her...
He sighs, it's the wrong wrench. But he is going to need it so... he ducks back down, he can just use the sonic on the one bit and then the wrench on the other bit. "Maybe I like a little bit of peril... it's not like you mind it either."
Ducking around a little bit to get at what he needs to reach, he's almost upside down and continues speaking, voice sounding like he's muffled. "And I seem to recall you getting into shenanigans with out me. Rude."

She laughed and pointed as the wrench hit him in the chest. His look to her was so long suffering and it made her chuckle more. Then he ducked down into relative safety under the level of the floor. Chicken, she thought.
"Those were not shenanigans. What am I supposed to do when I see aliens showing up doing no good? Now that I've traveled with you, well I can see them coming from a kilometer off, now, can't I. Can't very well stay home and wait for the invasion.
Sarah Jane flipped a few pages in her book and looked over at the hole where the Doctor was.
"So, just how precisely can you land this thing? I mean when it's not an emergency. Just every day ole' 'bam there you are'. Do you ever really pick a time and try for it or do you just sort of spin the dial and see what pops up?"
Sarah Jane took a banana out of the big tool box where she'd put it, and started carefully peeling it.

"Spin the dial and see what pops up is my favorite, but I can be fairly accurate in landings if need be..." He responds, taking a moment to think over why she'd be asking him that before making a reappearance. "Sarah, you're planning something. I can sense it. Where do you want to go, specifically?"
As he waits for her answer, he watches her, thinking about her statement of spying the aliens up to no good and stopping them. He'd expect nothing less of her, not only because she knew him and had traveled with him, but also because she was her. She stood up when she saw things that were wrong and spoke up, simply because it was the right thing to do. And then he smiles at a particular memory, knowing he's going to interrupt her train of thought. "As to you stopping alien invasions and the like... I seem to recall a certain intrepid journalist who made nice with the local lord and went on a raid to capture me. You Miss Smith, have always been a hero, I'm just glad I get to be part of the story."

As he popped up she considered throwing another tool at him just to prove his sweet talk didn't work on her. But it did. The sweet talk. Sarah Jane admired the Doctor quite a bit and it always delighted her that he seemed to feel the same way about her to some degree. An impressive evaluation from a Time Lord.
So she didn't throw anything at him and smiled instead.
"I started a raid after you because I thought you were the bad guy." She gave a cheeky shrug "Since then I've learned you're pretty good most of the time." A bigger grin "Almost always."
But it was always, wasn't it? She'd never quite tell him how much she was learning from him. How much she wanted to be like the Doctor. His head was big enough already. Still, once thoroughly buttered by him, she slid right into the answer she'd been trying to hold back.
"Mary Harris Jones. Mother Jones. From the Colonies right at the end of the 19th Century. She changed the world. Hell of a speaker. She brought the working class together in protest against the capitalist regime . . .she was amazing. Oh, please, Doctor, if we time it just right, we could hear her stand on a a literal stump and deliver one of her speeches. I've been studying this book. I think I know just when and where it should be safe enough. Before things got really complicated."
She refused to bat her eyelashes, but she wasn't above flashing him her 'I'm your best pal ever' smile in hopes of swaying him.
"Pretty please?"

"Well it worked out in the end, but then you've always been quick on your feet. But I gotta ask... where the hell did you hide? Because I still can't figure out where you were on the TARDIS, and you and I both know she looked quite a bit different then than she does now." He's not expecting an answer really, but he can't help but ask because he knows she'll at least manage to puzzle him again.
And he listens to her answer to his question about where she wants to go, and knowing what he knows about Mother Jones, he can see why she'd be interested in hearing the woman speak. It also makes him remember that that particular time frame in American history is a particularly nasty one for the average workers trying to get their rights, the strikebreakers were not shy about hurting people, no matter who they were. Unionizing was a very dangerous undertaking at the time, given the company stores in the company towns that mean the company may as well have OWNED you. Unfortunately for those companies, he and Sarah had faced far worse than them and their goons.
And it certainly doesn't hurt either that Sarah had turned on that smile of her's, the one that said 'I'm your best friend, let's get into trouble together'. They're peas in a pod, they really are. "Well, what are we waiting for? Let's go see Mother Jones."
He moves to climb out of the compartment he's been working in, but misjudges the angle and winds up slipping back into the compartment with a clatter. And he's stunned for a long moment before he manages to say in a loud voice, rather dumbly. "Ow."

"You know the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe don't you? It was something like that. Have you ever tried to find the edges of the Wardrobe? It does go on and on. Like you do." She teased, but then she yelped. The TARDIS had taken a toss so abruptly, she thought maybe it was a comment on Sarah Jane telling secrets.
In the same way that the Doctor and the TARDIS seemed to have a special relationship (who could miss the way he sometimes petted and cajoled it ) Sarah Jane had a rather complex and lovely relationship with the Wardrobe that had started the very first day she'd snuck in the door.
Now that had been a day to remember. Bigger on the inside. A delighted shock had gone through her, equally twisted with a bitter stripe of fear. What had hit hardest, and in the end ruled her choices, was a curiosity that overwhelmed her with the first breath. Sarah Jane hadn't had much time to poke about before she heard the doors opening, and she dashed away out of sight. That was when she and the Wardrobe had become first acquainted.
That was old news though. The new news was that the TARDIS gave a sudden hard tilt, rocking her back against a strut, her arms and legs flinging out. To her distress, she saw the Doctor mid maneuver out of the bay be flung back into it. For all her teasing, Sarah Jane didn't miss a second as she flung herself up to her feet even as the TARDIS settled to right again. She ran over to the gap in the flooring and dropped quite quickly down to her knees, reaching out a hand.
"Och, Doctor!" her voice was sharp with worry. "Are you alright?" She grabbed hard, two hands around his arm, and hauled upward with main strength.

"M fine..." He takes her hands and uses the leverage provided to haul himself up. "Think that's enough of that for today..."
He eyeballs the compartment a moment as if it's entirely at fault for him falling, before climbing out.
"You calling my TARDIS Narnia?" He's grinning as he asks the question, so she knows he's more amused by the comparison than anything else. Moving around the console he starts flipping switches. "Though speaking of Narnia, there's going to be a fantastic film adaptation released oh... very early 21st century. Make sure they actually have the sound working in the theater, otherwise the atmosphere of one of the most important scenes is completely ruined."
Once he's double-checked the coordinates (it never hurts, though even when he double-checks he's still off sometimes, but if Google maps can send apes to the wrong address at times, then he's allowed to be off too) he looks over at Sarah. "Want to set us off to meet Mother Jones, Irish rabble-rouser?"
