They rattled on a bit together about Narnia, arguing about just which scene was the most important as he fiddled with the TARDIS. Around the console he went, Sarah Jane walking in counterpoint to stay out of the way. She was studying him again. One of these days, she was really going to learn how to fly this thing. Oh, she'd worked out a few of the controls, the major ones, but much of what he did still eluded her. Sometimes she wondered if all of what he did was necessary or if he was just playing with it. Or showing off. Maybe it was all three. "Oh, yes!" It was rare he let her push the lever that would set it all in motion, and his invitation set her grinning ear to ear. She practically danced over to the right place and grabbed hold. Sarah Jane could feel the hum of the TARDIS through it like a very expensive car on idle, just waiting for someone to hit the gas. There was a smooth resistance to her push, and they were off. It started off well, but soon enough she felt a shudder, then a little jerk that made her grab onto the rail. "Whoop!" she commented, grinning over at the Doctor. Sometimes everything was as simple as hum, thrum, and there you were, but she had to admit it was a little more satisfying when there was turbulence along the way. It made it feel like you were going somewhere. The ninth doctor

He grinned broadly in return, he'd always enjoyed having company in the TARDIS and certainly, no company was better than his best friend, the woman who enjoyed running into trouble as much if not more than him. The rattling around in the TARDIS was just the icing on the cake really, it was half the fun because it was just part of the character of his ship and he wouldn't have it any other way.
"Wahooo!" He can't help but call out as they rattle around, the TARDIS taking her time in taking them to their destination, having fun as they enjoy the ride. It's better than any roller coaster or flight simulator, at least in his opinion, and he does enjoy a good roller coaster now and then.
After several long moments, the rotor stops and there's the dull thunk signaling they've landed. "After you Miss Smith."

From either side of the Control Column they clung on to the ride, surfing through space. The Doctor's excitement was always catching and she laughed as he whooped. Such a face he had when he was feeling joy. Those steely blue eyes, a smile that was all teeth and angular jaw, and a body that seemed ready to dance. Sarah Jane held on with long practice, tossing long brown hair out of her face as needed and flashing the straightest teeth in all of 20th century England. Their voices mingled and tossed back and fourth together with the grind and whoosh of the TARDIS.
She was hoping that they'd land in the right place and time, but really, it didn't entirely matter. Somewhere. They were going somewhere, and apparently they'd landed without mishap. Sarah Jane dashed for the door, stopping for only a moment to put on her long duster coat. It was something that would fit in well with the time period. Out the door she popped as the Doctor opened it.
The air held the perfect chill of night, and the tart scent of a thousand tall pines that all but obscured a starry sky. Prospects looked good so far. Then she heard the rabble rabble of male voices, and noticed bright spots of fire just a ways off.
As the Doctor came near, she grabbed his arm and gave it a squeeze of appreciation, flashing a smile up at him, her eyes nearly black in the dark.
"Looks like you actually fixed the TARDIS. I think this is the right place!"

"Oi! I'll have you know I'm a decent mechanic and I do know how to drive, it's just that sometimes the scenic route is the more interesting route than getting straight there." He knows she's teasing him, but he can't help it. A straight line isn't always the best route or the most interesting one... well unless it's the scenic road from Sedona to Flagstaff, Arizona... that route is pretty, but boy does it make him feel sick with all the twists and turns. And it's a singularly terrifying drive at night when it's just you in the dark and the nearly blind turns are very terrifying... he'd rather deal with some Vashta Nerada thanks.
But he takes a moment to take in their surroundings, smell the air, let his eyes adjust to the dark... "Yeah, right era... the pines are different, the American apes haven't gone on their wild bender of mismanaging the forests for near a century, so this all looks... healthy. Suppose we'll have to go talk around the fire to find out if I was dead on or not."

He was cranky. She wondered if it was left over from her throwing that spanner at his head. Well, he'd caught it hadn't he? Sarah Jane thought of talking the Doctor down from his high horse, especially when he started calling humans apes again. And telling her how they wrecked everything. She decided not to bother to chide him though, the woods would cheer him up. Not to mention she owed him somewhat. It looked like he had gotten her here, and she'd been excited about the idea for a while now. She did like it when he indulged her. Well, she was going to keep her mouth shut until he made that crack about maybe being dead. I mean after all, he was right beside her as she started out for the fire in the distance, cautious of the dark. "What on Earth do you mean by that? Chat around the fire to see if you were-" Sarah Jane cut off before she could say 'dead'. She didn't like to think about that, and it seemed like a jinx to say it out loud. "-If you're alive." He levels her with a deadpan look that he's not sure that she can see in the dark, but that doesn't really matter because his voice is as dry as the Sahara. "I mean to ask the locals what year it is Sarah. Unless you had another concern, like if we landed in Pennslyvania." He knows he's not always the best pilot, but he also knows that sometimes the TARDIS has a mind of her own. He'd rather be certain of when they are, the where is a minor issue in the grand scheme.
"On an unrelated matter remind me to track down whoever it was in the Forest Service that decided that suppressing all fires was an excellent idea, I need to have words with him..."

Sarah Jane replied most vehemently, hissing at him in a half whisper. "Oh, don't you dare complicate things-" She took hold of the Doctor's arm as she wobbled on a root in the dark, moving close to him. "- by going around asking people what year it is and where you are! We're trying to blend in."She settled down and explained herself a bit. "We won't have to ask because I'll know if it's her. I mean, if she's here. Or, I mean if we're there. Here. . . .right?"
They were picking their way along, getting ever closer to what turned out to be 30 or 40 tin lanterns. and a very many people milling about. She was starting to be able to hear individuals talking, and was amazed by all the different accents she was hearing. The ninth doctor

"Me? Blend in? It's like you don't know me at all..." He teases, because its not like he's ever blended in in his life. Most of the time what he wears is just timeless enough to not have too many questions asked. Other times he's pretty sure its just people being far too polite to question it and also being more concerned about the weird stuff going on than what he's wearing.
"But fine, I'll let you do the talking star reporter." The Doctor refrains from rolling his eyes because this is his best friend, he knows she's very good at what she does. And its not like he's mocking her anyways, he's very sincere in his statement about her being a star reporter, he's just annoyed that she's sometimes better at his job than he is. And sometimes, on occasion, has better ideas than him. And admittedly seeing the woman in question whom she wants to see speak will confirm very easily that he got it right.

"Blend in?" she said on a quiet laugh, "well, at least you've ditched the scarf." Oh, she missed that scarf, but anything for the laugh, right? As they reached the edges of the lantern lights, Sarah Jane pulled the Doctor to a stop, shushing him. "We can stay back here." She whispered, letting go of his arm as she found a stump to stand on. "And we're not talking to anyone." She advised him. "We can't mess this up, it's important. So we're just here to listen."She broke into an excited smile, and her teasing gave way entirely to excitement. "Besides, I hear Mother Jones could speak loud enough that everyone who came could hear her." her "Oh, thank you for this."Those gathered had been talking to each other, but the tone of it suddenly changed. She's here, she's here, they were saying. And there she was. All of five feet tall, white haired, dressed like a widow. She just looked like anybody's sweet old Granny. There were soft cheers from many in the crowd as she got up on the rise the other's had gathered about. Her voice did boom out. Sarah Jane could barely breath, and it was everything she could do not to cheer Mary Harris Jones on. "I want to put it up to the citizens, up to every honest man in here—let me ask you here, have your public officials any thought for the citizens of this State, or their condition?
Now, then, go with me up those creeks, and see the blood-hounds of the mine owners, approved of by your public officials. See them insulting women, see them coming up the track. I went up there and they followed me like hounds. But some day I will follow them. When I see them go to Hell, I will get the coal and pile it up on them.
I look at the little children born under such a horrible condition. I look at the little children that were thrown out here.
Now then, let me ask you. When the miners—a miner that they have robbed him of one leg in the mines and never paid him a penny for it—when he entered a protest, they went into his house not quite a week ago, and threw out his whole earthly belongings, and he and his wife and six children slept on the roadside all night. Now, you can't contradict that. Suppose we had taken a mine owner and his wife and children and threw them out on the road and made them sleep all night, the papers would be howling "anarchy."-- " Mother Jones was all riled up and waving one small fist about over her head. That was when Sarah Jane saw it. A laser red dot that first wavered near, Mother Jones, but within a second was wobbling towards her heart. "Oh, Doctor! LOOK!" she shouted, then looked over her shoulder, trying to see where it was coming from. Her hair whipped as she turned back to look at Mother Jones. "Get Down! Get DOWN!" Sarah Jane yelled at the top of her lungs. There was some reaction in the crowd, but it looked like just confusion, just faces turning back to try to spot her in the shadows. The ninth doctor

"How I ever ran with that thing I'll never know." He responds, though to himself he'll admit he misses it a little bit too... every so often he'll come across it in the wardrobe and think of how much simpler a time that seemed, running around with Sarah, Harry, and the many other's who came after them when he wore that scarf. He was getting old... how he wished he could go back to worrying about a mid-life crisis rather than grappling with surviving a war.
But being here with Sarah Jane, her excitement palpable no matter how cool she tries to play it, this is why he loves traveling the universe. This is why he loves his friends, his family... it's the little moments of happiness, of something GOOD, of finding that little spot of light in the dark, that makes all the terrible things worth it. And he smiles at her. "You're welcome."
As Mother Jones speaks, voice carrying across the clearing, he can understand why she was considered a great speaker. Listening to her is like hearing Martin Luther King Jr speak, certain in their convictions and confident that they will succeed. The fights worth having are never easy, but they're worth it for the generations who will benefit from them too.
And then the red dot and Sarah Jane yelling and the next thing he was doing was charging forward ordering in the most authoritative voice he had "Everybody down!" to get to Mother Jones, the reason Sarah had wanted to come here, and save her life. This was the wrong century for that sort of thing and whoever was behind it had just found the right sort of people to go after them.

Of course. Of course that is what the Doctor would do, she thought as she watched him run forward with her heart in her throat and momentarily stunned. Please, by all the stars, let him not be shot by the bullets that would inevitably start to fly. Sarah Jane knew a laser sight when she saw one. If her will, or her hands, or even her body could have protected him she would have done it. Her idea came to her in a fraction of a second as she realized she could vaguely see the line of the laser cutting through the air, catching on tiny motes and whatnot that were in constant, near invisible fall in the forest. She jammed a hand into her pocket and came up with a tiny hand mirror. With a dash and a stretch, she caught that beam and redirected it away from it's target. A tree bloomed with splinters and a deafening bang, but the first bullets didn't hit the Time Lord, or the old woman. Although the others scattered, Mother Jones stood solid where she was. Sarah Jane didn't dare try the same trick again, worried of loosing a hand. She did however, dash quietly as she could in the dark toward whomever must be doing the shooting, determined to see who would dare do such a thing.
