1980. Dawn over the quiet hills of South Croydon. The manor stands, hard, solid red brick on the softness of green grass and wild wheat. A foggy steam rises off the roof as the sun hits dew from the night before. It is a stately place, once owned by the rather famous (and infamous) scientist Lavinia Smith. It is surrounded by a somewhat neglected English garden. A soild home of size, Sarah Jane had found it a safe haven amidst the turmoil of the rest of her life. A time or three, her work had followed her home, but she'd been safe inside these thick walls and the heavy, dark woodwork. The only thing that followed her in were her dreams of her time with the Doctor. Some dreams that haunted her, some that brought her joy. But ever if she was startled awake, finding herself in the manor always made her feel safe. These days, she'd literally been leaving her work at the door. Placed outside were three pairs of rather muddy wellingtons, and even a full, bright yellow rain suit that had seen better days as well. Sarah Jane had been too tired last night to bring everything in and wash it off. Besides, she had enough concerns about what might be on those boots to go spreading it around inside. From outside the two story structure, one could see a single light on the bottom floor glowing warm through the windows. The kitchen. One might even hear a teakettle whistling. Loneliness, it was sometimes the hardest thing to deal with. Time alone meant time to think. Time to think, meant time to ponder things that one either wanted to ponder or not want to ponder. More likely the latter than the prior, but sometimes the prior would bubble to the surface too. It just depended where the mental rabbit hole would go. On one hand it could lead to wonderland, the other hand it could send one traveling into a dark twisted nightmare instead. A nightmare one wanted nothing more than but to run away from. The real question was, which direction was this time?
The Doctor didn't know at first. As far as it seemed as he went through some older files, just for boredoms sake, and well maybe a bit of clean out, things seemed to be okay. Nothing felt quite one way or another, but then he started to come across things that seemed to hit a nerve. Images of old friends long gone. Ones maybe he should have check in on more often, others he just wish he'd not lost at all. It has started making him emotional a bit as he stood there all alone in his control room. Alone...
That was always the most hollow feeling he could have. It's why he always tried to con someone into traveling with him. So he didn't have to be alone so long. He had made many a promise he'd never be alone to long to his companions, but sometimes things just didn't work out so well. He gave what seemed like a holding back sort of sigh as he rubbed his face with his hands. Even a time lord needed a few minutes of sleep. However, he'd not done that for days, maybe even more than a week. Gods he couldn't remember. Either way after he did that he frustratingly tried to back out of the stuff he was working on. Yet in his frustration of trying to exit out, he ended instead moving forward a few paces in files and a sudden picture of a certain familiar face came up, one he'd not seen in a while. That face was Sarah Jane Smith's. Why, why did that picture have to come up. All it did was make him look a bit like a deflated balloon. He tried to exit again, but the TARDIS decided she was going to argue with him. The picture came back up.
"Not now." he stated wearily. He tried to exit again, but it wouldn't work. He looked at the TARDIS' central piece with frustration, "Come on, why are you doing this now."
The TARDIS didn't say anything, but instead brought up every file he had on his old companion. The Doctor stared at it with a thin lipped expression. What was his TARDIS trying to imply. Sarah Jane was long out of his life at this point. So why was the TARDIS so adamant at bringing her up? Did she really think he could go see her again? Was that the case? The Doctor shook his head. There was no way he could do that. And even if he could he couldn't go back to any point before he last saw her at, it could mess things up.
"Seriously, I can't." The Doctor tried to bemoan. "You know I can't ol' girl."
The TARDIS made a vwhorp sound as if to contend "Why not."
The Doctor paced a little in place, his arms crossed and one hand rubbing his sharp jawline. The TARDIS was being a little stubborn he could tell. Honestly what was so important about needing to shove Sarah Jane's image in his face? And why did his TARDIS believe even that he could do what she was thinking. Even she knew doing anything out of the normal would be breaking rules he shouldn't. Yet, somewhere deep down inside his stomach there was a sudden surge and pull to do something about this. He bit at his upper lip a bit and looked at Sarah's image from her file one more time, staring long and hard at it. He then gave a weighted sigh and closed his eyes after he let the arm he'd been rubbing his chin with drop to his side, putting his other hand on the control console.
"I do miss her." he stated more quietly as much to himself as he was talking to the TARDIS. The TARDIS gave an urging sort of noise as if to say "What could you lose?". The Doctors head hung in defeat and thought all at once. He then side eyes the image again. It tugged at him, badly. But as he tried to contend with the idea that maybe he could be pushed into it, other thoughts began to rush in of his past, especially the Time Lord Victorious. That right there alone was what tried to to solidify him into not going. Just that thought alone made him clam right back up. No he couldn't do it no matter how much the TARDIS tried to insist. Even if he wanted to make up for all that he'd caused to Sarah Jane by leaving her behind. She turned out fine, what need was there to go meddle and mess that good thing up.
"No!' he commanded to the TARDIS as he pushed away from the console and looked away from it fully, turning a hard gaze towards a wall. Unfortunately, the TARDIS wasn't going to take no for an answer. In fact, the TARDIS on her own started making the coordinates to Sarah Jane's without him having to do anything and then began to move through space time in the vortex.
"Sexy! I said no! No means no! Do you hear me!" The Doctor pleaded and tried to stop her, but she locked the controls. Damn stubborn time machine! There was nothing he could do but go along for the adventure. However, he tried his hardest to stop her still. Yet little did he know that the TARDIS had parked perfectly right in front of Sarah Jane's home in a year he'd actually not visited her at all. The Doctor noticed this.
"You can't possibly make me step out there. I won't go." he stated crossing his arms. "And you can't make me."
Oh but the TARDIS could make him. She could disappear without him and reappear elsewhere. Which was exactly what she was going to do to him. She began to dematerialize around him.
"Don't you dare!" he yelled at her, scrambling to hold onto something, but couldn't grab ahold of anything at all. Instead he almost nearly tumbled forward and face concreted instead, just barely catching himself before he could. After regaining composure he looked to the sky, "Your in big trouble missy!"
He wasn't sure if they TARDIS heard him or not, but he sure hoped she did. Oh he was so flustered and frustrated. What was up with her?! Why was she so insistent and disobedient that she'd leave him there? Not knowing what else to do, he turned around sharply and saw Sarah Jane's home. Pressing his lips together in apprehension, he stared at it longingly. Should he go still? He could walk away and just mill about and not do what the TARDIS wanted him to do. Or he could just suck it up and actually at least go say hello, maybe pretend to be a neighbor or something like that. A lot of thoughts and ideas crossed his mind as to how he could approach this. He wasn't sure being straight forward would be a good idea, especially as he got a sense of the time period he was in. It would be a younger Sarah and he didn't want to mess that up. He hadn't come back for her, that's what she had told him. So why now would he come back?
Then that feeling in his stomach came back, and it didn't help that he could smell his surroundings. It smelled like early morning, which meant breakfast. Was that something good possibly cooking wavering in the air? Okay, so he'd give a small check in, but he was not going to get invested. But what would a quick hello be a bother for? After all he still had the option to pose off as someone else after all. Straightening out his clothes, bow tie, and giving a small clearing of his through he began to walk to the door. What was he going to even say? He didn't really know, his brain was running a million miles an hour and there was a part of it that was starting to just blank out on him.
"Okay, I can do this." he said to himself as he came upon the door. He stared at it for one long second before he raised his hand to knock. At first he tried to but his fist came short and he was even half tempted to just bolt then and there. But instead he gave a stubborn sigh and tried again, this time giving a weak but audible knock. He even then tried a second time, more audible than then first and then just stood there as gentlemanly patient as he could. Maybe she wasn't home? But more likely that was just a lie his brain was trying to con him into thinking so he could get out of this. He wouldn't know until the door opened or not. If it stayed closed for a long time after knocking he'd know she wasn't, but until then he'd stand there and wait.

The radio was playing Silver Dream Machine by David Essex. She had it down low so she could still focus on the map she had in one hand. With the other hand, she absently fed herself rye toast with a coating of Vegemite and butter punctuated with sips of steaming hot English Breakfast tea. The knock at the door made her frown at the clock. 5:23 AM. Mighty early for visitors, but it could be the test results for the first samples she'd taken in. UNIT also woke up as early as she did, after all. Sarah Jane rather hoped that this dawn delivery was because the results had frightened and bewildered Dr.Elliot so much that he'd sent them right away. That possibility her smile. She'd be caught in her flannels and her robe but whomever it was at the door had only themselves to blame, she thought, heading for the front door. Too bad she was also still in her pink fuzzy slippers, without a solid boot heel, she had to get up on her toes so that her whole face showed through the small, iron bound peep door. The man on her porch was not a soldier. Not with that hair cut. He looked like a rather elongated librarian. Sarah Jane did not recognize him. He wasn't even holding anything, so why was he here? And where was his car, Sarah Jane wondered with a, eyes flicking to her drive and back to the man at the door. Curiouser and curiouser. "Hello?"( the eleventh doctor )

Damn! She was there. Well best get on with it then, he supposed. Not that he didn't want to see her, but he was bucking at the grain of his TARDIS and was really just feeling super awkward all at once. he felt more like becoming the welcome mat than talk. Fear was getting the better of him.
"Um, yes. Sorry to be a bother." he stated, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "I um, I'm a bit new to the area, and I was looking for a friend of mine. She's supposed to be in these parts. So I was wondering if you could help me. You're the only one I saw lights on at this hour and thought I might be able to get some assistance."
It was neither a truth nor a lie. Technically that face was new to that time and area all at once. The only reason he even had an inkling this was Sarah Janes place at all was because of his last face and also just the fact of why would the TARDIS go anywhere else but. Of course she'd go to Sarah Jane's home and just leave him there. But he didn't want to go and assume either that it was her. But the voice, he could hear the voice behind the door. It was her.

He was looking away, his eyes hiding behind that shock of hair. The way he seemed to be avoiding her even while he was standing right there, the stranger gave her an uneasy feeling. She eased back from the metal grate a little so he couldn't poke her in the eye should he try such a thing. It wasn't that Sarah Jane was scared, she was just smart.
And something felt off about this. She chose her question carefully, her voice husky with the morning.
"If you tell me her address, I can point you in the right direction."
If you do a good job of answering my questions, she amended silently.

Oh now he was in for it. How could he get around that one. There had to be a way he could be clever. He could just give up then, again just walk away, say he was sorry for bothering her even though he knew it was her. Yet that didn't seem like him at all. The TARDIS dropped him there, he was going to have to face the music. Even if it was going to be a hard thing to do for him.
"Well you see...that's the thing." he tried saying nervously, still not quite meeting gaze at her looking through from the other side. "I believe this was the address given, at least when I last check."
No he didn't say check on paper, but he hoped it might have been at least a bit implied. He was still playing off the fact of not realizing it was Sarah behind that door on the other side. A small inkling that wanted to hope otherwise, but he was only kidding himself. The charade was going to have to end soon.
"My friend goes by the name Sarah Jane Smith." he said as much as a statement as it was a question of asking if she was this person. There was really no way to hide it, he was there for her after all. And even as he wondered if she said yes, oh what that would mean in any regard. Of course she'd say yes, at least that's what the logical, sensible, reasonable, non idiot side of his Gallifreyan brain would tell himself. He nearly wanted to smack himself for such a dumb thought process. His eyes shifted lightly with a dart a bit towards the peeping window and then towards the drive, back again, and then tried to stay straight ahead of him. There was his impatient energy getting the better of him already. One could just hope it didn't start bouncing off the proverbial walls soon.

The fellow was already contradicting himself. For a moment she considered calling him on it immediately, but if she gave him more rope to hang himself by, she might learn more. Mulling things over very quickly, she put her heels back down on the floor. Now she only showed through the little door from the nose up, which gave her a little more privacy to think.
The man wasn't looking at her, but she was getting a better look at him. It was a face she knew she did not recognize, and she was also positive she didn't have any pen pals. Who even said things like 'goes by the name of'? It was possible it had something to do with space stuff. She did get her fair share of odd visitors, but why the lie then about why he had come to her door? What was this all about?
"Ms.Smith has lived here. Where do you know her from? Are you a journalist?" Sarah Jane put an extra friendly lilt in her voice, all the while wondering if he would take the bait.

"Ah...no." he stated truthfully. "Not a journalist."
He was finding it harder and harder just to keep a guise. It weighted inside him he should have probably just been upfront, but deep down inside he really, really, really cared about Sarah Jane. And he really, really, really didn't want to mess up whatever life she'd started after he left her behind. There was a part of him that wanted nothing more than to meet up with his last self that was with her for not only landing in the wrong place, but leaving her for so long. He knew there were some things he couldn't have foreseen, but still. At least a small part wanted to hick himself in his own bum for it.
"Just a friend..." he stated strangely fond and some what solemn slightly lilting at his voice. He had to face her, as much as he guiltily didn't want to meet her gaze because of his deep feelings of regret. But, he forced his face to look at the iron grated window in the door. His eyes gazed as best he could deeply into the holes, trying to take in what little view of Sarah Jane was left. As he did he slowly said with honesty in both is voice, facial features, and eyes, "...A very old friend."
The fact he was actually looking now just made him inwardly and outwardly feel like a lost or kicked puppy on the steps when its a rainy day. it was near to nothing but pathetic, yet somehow adorable in its own weird and odd sort of way.
He cleared his throat a bit, "We um, we used to travel abroad together."
The term "abroad" was very loosey goosey in his case. Abroad was either in spacial on Earth only or in time on Earth or heck even off Earth in time and or space. It all depended on trip and context. But it was said with fond remembrance in any case in mind.

He wasn't much of a con man, though it seemed it was what he was trying to do. At least he finally showed his face, the green of his eyes. It was a nice face, but his eyes held a haunted look that suddenly made him look older despite his overgrown-schoolboy looks. Not that his eyes were clouded or wrinkled, no, it was something deep in the eyes themselves.
Nothing he said was adding up. Or maybe it was, just a little tiny bit. A spark. A spark within her that had been quite thoroughly buried with rubble from her will and her soul. One she thought she'd snuffed, but there it was, and it made her angry that it was intruding on her now. Distracting her. There is one person who is an old friend. One that she had traveled with. Sarah Jane Smith worked her jaw and pushed away that little spark of an idea. The effort made her throat tight, but she stubbornly stayed on track with her interrogation. One could hear the strain in her voice.
"If you're my old friend, then why don't you know who I am?"
There may have been a small catch in her voice.

Oh he knew who she was, the voice drifting out of the peep window giving away it all about her. He didn't need to see her wonderfully beautiful face to know it was her. He could see it in his mind. Both as the young woman he kew she was, and as the older more refined woman she'd become. he remembered the older better, but that was because it was the more sooner of the two that he's seen lately. And oh how he remembered her words to him. What she said about how he left her behind.
The words even flitted through his mind, Same. They laughed. I thought you’d died. I waited for you and you didn’t come back, and I thought you must have died.
Oh how those words just stung like a deep cut to the cheek. They haunted him, even after he thought he had made up for it with that new K9, but it still hadn't. Not completely. He had still let it fester a bit, fester that he could have, should have done something. Now hearing her voice again, much, much younger; made that so, so much harder more painful. But, strangely...the pain was worth it. It was like a patient who had to get through a traumatic experience, sometimes the person just had to face that wall of trauma head on and deal with it. So here he was, dealing with it. Who knew how it would turn out though, hopefully for the better though. He always wanted a better story.
He slowly, cautiously moved his way over to the door and leaned lightly against it. Hopefully she wouldn't just open it on him while he did. Though it probably would have been funny to see him stumble indoors. As he leaned his side against the door he allowed his face to stay turned towards the peep window so he could be heard. This wasn't like the last fun jolly along they had at the school. He couldn't keep the facade as well as he wanted this time. He had to be true to her. It was the least he owed.
"oh...I know who you are." he said slowly and solemnly, letting the air escape his chest as he did so, because of being caught like a child with their hand in the cookie jar. "It's just...its been such a long time for me and well I had to make sure just in case. I know your voice from anywhere. But one never knows. For all I knew someone else could have lived here, could have been wrong in when. Would have seemed odd to go hey, how are you to some stranger and revealed myself."
It was a stupid excuse more than likely, but he was trying. Closing his eyes, he stated, "I'm sorry. I really am. For everything."
Yes that was partially saying he was sorry for deceiving her a bit, but he was now also trying to get his apologies started for his leaving her, just in case she decided she was just going to slam the window peep door in his face. He hoped she wouldn't, but yeah he'd get it if she did. and if she did, he'd have to wander until his TARDIS decided to stop buggering off on him. However, if she didn't shut that window on him (can it be just said how ironic that sounds), he would have to withstand the next move Sarah would throw his way. He could take it, if she did. He knew she was an honest, blunt, and up front woman. He didn't underestimate her much.
He didn't ask for forgiveness yet. He didn't feel he probably deserved it. But that was just him being him. He was very much loathing a lot, so it made sense that he had no faith that he deserved reprieve for what he'd done.

Sarah Jane sagged against the door as she listened to him speak. All the starch had gone out of her. What if it was him? But what if it wasn't?
Who else would have such a stupid excuse, or be so sorry? She could hear it in his voice, how terribly sorry he was. Her mind was racing back now to all the times over the past year that she had needed him, was certain that surely this time he would come save her. But he hadn't come, and she hadn't needed saving. She was standing here after all, wasn't she? Or at least she was leaning.
He wasn't dead. He was alive, or at least he was alive now. She ran a hand down her face as she mourned, for surely showing up in this new face, he had died. Sarah Jane had expected him to come when she needed him, but where had she been when he was busy dying? Unless of course this was all some horrible trick. That made her mad and she dashed away threatening tears with the sleeve of her robe, and forced her legs to stand tall. Up on tip toe she looked through the grate again. The tip of her nose was pinked with her emotion.
"Hey. Prove it. Whats in your pocket?" Her voice was rough. She wanted it to be the Doctor more than anything else in the world. If this was some sort of nefarious plot to get to her, heads would roll.

That question she asked sounded like a The Hobbit quote. That was a good riddle Bilbo gave. What's in my pocket...? He remembered fondly that Gollum couldn't answer, even though it was the ring that the deranged deformed ex hobbit wanted. it was clever, something he would have done. Relativeness, it was priceless. His mind didn't drift for too long on that interesting thought though. It came back to the moment and what he was doing.
What was in his pocket though? Well there were a few things in his pocket. Some of which were of little importance, while others...others were of great importance. Especially things like his sonic screwdriver. Was that what she was looking for? He had started carrying one around the time of those incarnations she had traveled with. Maybe it was. After all the sonic was iconic of him only usually. Eyeing to the left side of his coat, he took his right hand and reached inside his pocket, and drew out the long slim cylindrical object made of metal, wiring, etc. It had a very steam punk feel, but thats because much of him and his TARDIS interior had a small feel like that. He looked at it for a moment. He'd become so co dependent on its use.
He rolled his sonic lightly in his hand, the metal making a little bit of tinking noise as tiny parts of it moved about. He rubbed a thumb against its cool siding before holding it up in front of the iron window peep to let Sarah Jane see it. He made the top extend up, and he idly pushed the button so it could make its iconic whirring sound. It was almost like waving a white flag. After hopefully giving her enough of a few seconds to take the sonic in, he finally retracted it and turned it off, letting his hand with the sonic still in it fall to his side. He leaned his back against the door close to the frames edge and let his gaze look down a bit.
"Yes, Sarah Jane, it really is me." he stated trying to sound sincere.
He so wanted her to open that door, so he could see her fully, maybe even hope for a hug. He liked hugs, he was a huggy man. At least this face anyway. Hugs felt warm and comforting. However, he was quite uncertain if he'd end up with a hug or a good old fashion slap to the face like he'd experienced the last to faces. Jackie was a damn strong slapper if he could say so. And he did. Honestly he assumed he'd feel that slap all the way to this current regeneration that was for sure. At least on occasion, like some ghost feeling against his cheek. As much as it had bothered him back then, he realized now just how much care and spunk that blonde mother had. He could see where Rose got some of her bite from. At least a little.
The anticipation was killing him though. If the he did hear the door eventually open, he'd quickly move away and turn around to face Sarah Jane.

She didn't mean to slam it.
It could have been anything, really, from his pockets. As long as it wasn't a wallet or car keys Sarah Jane would have accepted anything from a yo-yo to a mouse. But he had the Sonic, of course he did. It looked different, but when he turned it on it made that very familiar ache in the back of her jaw. A bolt of excitement rushed through her and in quick succession, she had jerked back her head from the grate and slammed the peephole door.
It took her a couple of seconds to take off the chain before she could yank the door open.
There Sarah Jane stood in her layers of white cotton bed clothes, a robe, and fuzzy pink slippers. Her dark hair was a rather perfect disaster, and her face wore the very definition of shock. Eyes wide, mouth open. No words coming out as she got a first good look at all of him. She found her mind automatically going through a quick check list. Wild hair, check. Unusually tall, check. Built for running, check. Eccentric clothes, check.
She forced herself to take a breath and meet his eyes. Check.
"A bow tie? Really?"
Her heart was pounding. She'd never been so pleased to see anyone in her whole life even if she was too flabbergasted for it to show on her face yet.

She finally opened the door! This was a good sign! So far...
It could have been a trap though, she could have had a broom stick or a mop on the other side of that door near her. She could have pulled him inside and still gave him a good smacking. Yet none of those things happened. It kind of made him a bit weirded out. He'd forgotten just how much more gentle folks like Sarah Jane were. Not to say that Sarah Jane couldn't be a feisty one when she wanted to be. But she was not so much as brazen as 21st century girls were. 21st century girls were more...openly aggressive. They had no troubles expressing themselves, probably because it was a time where woman demanded that they not be berated by men nor being hit by them either if they spoke for themselves or out of turn. Those days of abuse were gone, so it made them more forthright. They knew they could be in charge now. And in some cases...that made them more dangerous and fierce. Not a bad thing, but it could be very scary sometimes as he'd note over the years by comanioning woman from Rose up. He probably should have seen the writing on the wall by the point and time of Ace, she was a very well to do girl and eventual woman, but she wasn't a wall flower that was for certain.
Sarah on her behalf was adventurous, kind, but she wasn't one to not speak her mind a bit. The Doctor actually was fond of that fact. So when he saw the look on her face about him, one that wasn't quite as aggressive as his more current companions, that slowly rising brightness. It almost felt like all that old time came back once again, just like the same way it did when he was ten's face and she was older and they teamed up once again at the school against the Krillitanes. That face made him relax. He gave her a small smile from under that emo hair of his, almost mischievous in nature, but still good.
"Hello...Sarah Jane." he stated warmly then gave a cheeky scowl. "Ey now, bowties are cool."

"Oh, so you say." she laughed a little and sounded skeptical.
She ran those few small steps to him. Well, in those fuzzy slippers, it was more like an enthusiastic shuffle, but she transversed the space between them. Sarah Jane broke into a smile on the way with the most even set of teeth in England 1980. She went right to him and grabbed hard his arms, squeezing them with might and looking up with more than fondness.
It felt like the world had righted itself after being all kebobble for too long. As she looked up into that face that was so new to her, she found his eyes were not. Oh, they were a different shape, and different color, but she could read them just the same as she ever had. Something was wrong. Something more than just dying.
Deep in his eyes, he looked so sad, and her smile faded a little. But not all the way. She tugged him a bit, pulling him into the house, walking backwards to bring him in.
"Are you . . . alright?"
