He shut her down over Rose. Oh, it was an answer, but it wasn't much of one. The tale sounded pretty good. Rather reassuring. His face, his tone, were not at all. Whomever Rose was, she'd broken his heart. Then again, he could be a real ass sometimes and maybe he'd earned it. Then again, she would hope anyone he chose to travel with would put up with his foibles. Not that she had, but that was different. She had reasons.
Reasons not dissimilar to the disappointment in his voice when he tried to be supportive of her latest case.
"Well. I really should get this thing with the limpet's cleared up before we leave, don't you think? I was headed out right after tea. Besides, without the TARDIS, I imagine there isn't much on your plate right now." She gave him a jab back in kind. "Looks like we're stuck here until she take's mercy on you. So. You coming with me?"
If the answer wasn't yes, her heart might just break right on the floor. It unnerved her, how much he had changed. And how very sad he was.
Please say yes. Please say yes.

The Doctor took another drink of tea and shoved a few more of those delicious blackberries in his face before he'd decided to make any decision. He could tell that she seemed somewhere between skeptic and concerned over the Rose matter. Oh she'd learn about it later. At least some details anyway. For now though much of that would have to be left a mystery. in the meantime there were potential mutant limpets to attend to. To be honest deep down he was hoping they were more than just some human doing of radioactive mutations. He was putting hope into that it was alien in nature, because that was his area of expertise.
At least she was willing to get into the thick of something. And especially have him tag along. It was really almost like the good old days once more. There was certain feeling of kindred spirit like time had never ended between them to some degree even though it had for some time.
"Does a zebra were plaid pajamas? No, wait don't answer that." he stated with a small laugh while putting up a finger. "What I meant is, of course I will!"
He spread his hands out like a grand gesture.
"Yes it really should be taken care of." he stated nonchalantly. "After all, who knows if they could potentially find a way suck on peoples faces or something silly like that."

Such a mobile face, and guileless as well. When had the Doctor started wearing his heart on his sleeve? Perhaps the same time he'd learned to enjoy a good hug. His answer didn't come instantly, and Sarah Jane surreptitiously held her breath.
She saw the agreement in his eyes like a light a moment before he said it. Sarah Jane burst into a bright smile. Everything was always much more fun with the Doctor about. Though she had been looking forward to the day's work since she woke, now it felt more like going on holiday. She rolled her eyes at him as he tried to make his choice sound magnanimous even though she knew he was as excited as she.
"Fantastic!" her heels lifted up out of her slippers a moment as she gave a gleeful bounce on her toes, firmly not thinking of a large limpet stuck to somebody's face. "Well. I'm not going dressed like a zebra, so you can go make yourself useful by hosing down my car. It took quite a bit of mud last night." She gave the Doctor quite a cheeky grin before turning and dashing up the stairs, leaving her tea cup in his hand.
Out in the driveway waited her VWBug, just the same color that Bessie was except where it was muddy around the bottom. There was indeed a handy hose as well.

He was glad to see Sarah Jane so lively. it was like taking a step through door to ones past and it never ended. He wasn't quite ready for her to practically just leave the cleanup to him, but he didn't mind. She could be as giddy about the idea of them working together again all she wanted. He gave her a look as she left then the cup she handed him and shook his head with a small smile. So once she left to go get herself ready, he got to the task of finishing his tea, eating a few more of those delicious berries, and then taking the dishes and what not to be cleaned up. If there was one thing about The Doctor in this regeneration, it was that he had the ability to be really fast and on point with things.
So naturally, he not only cleaned up the mess and cleaned the dishes, but he had them places back surprisingly just how she'd want them away. Perhaps she'd take note perhaps she wouldn't. If she did well that was great, if not, well at least then they were put away. She'd asked him to go out and clean the car for her. He didn't mind, it was an easy task to accomplish. He went out, found the hose, had even found a sponge or two and a couple towels, and some stuff to protect her car from the weathering elements. Everything took no more than maybe ten minutes max to get done, and when he was he had the opportunity to stand back and admire his work. Oh, was it also mentioned that he'd actually even given under the "hood" a gander to make sure everything was tuned up as well. Well he did, and he was quite proud if it too.
Wiping his brow with only a minor set of exhaustion, he smiled at the "newness" the car seemed to radiate. Sarah Jane, he was certain, would be pleased with his job. It helped he had tea before taking on such a task. Once he was done admiring, he took and put the stuff away and had gone back inside. Now whether Sarah Jane was ready in that time or not, he was not certain. He knew he was a fast man, but maybe it wouldn't take her that long to get ready either. Either way he sort of waited, poking about here and there just a little in curiosity at her home, just trying to see what might have been different about it than what he could remember of her home later in life.

Curio cabinets laced the walls of the stately old home. Scientific Awards that had been granted to one Lavinia Smith for this and that accomplishment. Strange bits of this and that well preserved that included both a bobbin of a comet, and some Neanderthal tools. There beside the curio cabinets were framed pictures of a fine upstanding lady of a certain age standing next to this or that truly famous person.
The fine bookshelves that lined the drawing room had thick, leather bound volumes of some of the greatest scientific works in print.
But then, there was this one shelf. Next to the fireplace mantel. It had a picture of Sarah and Harry mugging about on Bessie. A scrap of embroidery with bells from a far of vacation location. A glance farther left showed a more modest glass cabinet, not larger than half a keg, but it had Sarah Jane's small group of awards she'd won in the last couple of years.
Or perhaps one's eyes wandered to the maps and files that lay around in predictable spirals of connection instead of straight lines. Tax forms and blue prints for a company called Extraordinary Lt. A glance would show it was some sort of bio-tech firm, an anomaly for 1980. There was also an extensive waterway system map with two bright red stars on it.
Sarah Jane came back down the stairs lickity split. Now that she worked without a time machine, she'd learned to be prepared and prompt. Everything was already laid out, and she jumped into her clothes. At first glance her business suit with skirt looked quite proper, but there was nothing backward about the substantial, knee-high leather boots she was wearing and a rather tight fitting leather vest that peeked out under her crisp white button down shirt. There was also a bit of dash to her soft-sided leather document carrier worthy of any investigative reporter. It certainly did have a few surprises inside that she'd learned to carry with her. Fifteen minutes after she'd gone upstairs, she was walking past the kitchen and stopped mid-stride. Someone had done a fine job of tidying, and Sarah Jane had to admit that it must have been the Doctor. It was about the last thing she'd expected.
She was really starting to like this fellow.
Sarah Jane broke back into stride, and caught her friend with is new face around the corner.
"Ready set then?" She grinned, looking band box fresh and ready for anything.

"Never thought you'd ask." he teased just a little, then raised a brow. "You're looking fairly spiffy."
She was always pretty good about having a smart sense of fashion. Not an over the edge sense, but enough to keep looking good. Something The Doctor could always appreciate. Granted his sense of fashion sense changed with each face, but that was more personal. His view on others seemed to stay fairly moderate in most cases. Though, he would probably never got back to that level of outrageous outfit he thought was proper clothing from his six regeneration ever again. No, that had been a life choice he'd regretted since. And hopefully only once. Even the sheer thinking about it almost made him want to show a bleh face about it. But luckily he swiftly could push that sort of thinking aside quickly.
He gestured for them to leave out the front door, allowing her to leave first. So gentlemanly of him to do. Either way, he made his way out the front door himself, anticipation rising inside him as to what she'd think of the car's condition. She'd not expressed what she'd thought of his dish put away handiwork, so he was uncertain how she felt exactly, but by the look on her face she didn't seem upset at all so all he could assume was that she'd been pleased at least a little.
"I hope you don't mind, but I did a little bit of extra work on your car." he stated sheepishly, doing a gesture with his hand to show size, which was very small indeed. "Not gonna lie, I knda enjoyed it."

"Well, you've lucked out today-" she said, glowing a bit under his compliment. "We're going somewhere nice instead of mucking about." Sarah Jane approached him and looked fondly up at him. With quick, deft gestures, she straightened his tie, flipped a rebellious lock of hair into place, and patted his lapels. "I knew you'd juice the car, it's half the reason I asked you to spruce it up. In you pop."
It was not a large car. It was a Sarah Jane sized car and it suited her quite well. Not, so much, the Doctor. Unceremoniously she reached over between his legs and pulled the lever up to let the bucket seat slide back to accommodate him. In the next instant, she was starting up her Bug. The engine purred.
"Ohh." she sighed in appreciation and took off at quite a good clip. She was a speedy and buoyant driver. After all, she'd spent enough time bouncing about in Bessie and various army vehicles that she was much more used to that than your average Sunday drive.
"We're headed off to the Extraordinary Limited main office. I'm going in with some malarky about a better interface with the Word Wide Web," A somewhat new and mysterious technology in 1980, "but what I'm really hoping for is to break into their computer records."
She might have taken that last turn a bit hard, enough to push her hard against the door, but now they were jetting down the highway. Her eyes darted down, catching a glimpse of a new button that seemed jury -rigged just below her dash.
"What does that red button do?"

He listened to what she had to say. A part of him got caught up on how she spoke about the web. Word Wide Web? Maybe she just said it wrong? Maybe she heard it wrong and thus said it wrong? He didn't know. However, The Doctor understood that the web was not quite a thing until the nineties. He also knew it was the World Wide Web, or internet as it so fondly got called, but yeah there was a part of him that just really wanted to find her misstep of the words just a little hilarious. Not in a mean way, but just gently jest about way. Oh did he try and hold back on that though, oh how it hurt his insides to try not to just bust out laughing just a little. He really didn't want to make her feel dumb or bad about it. So he held it in as best he could.
"Interesting...sounds adventurous." he stated.
Being distracted by the mention of a button though, The Doctor raised a brow, giving a small cheeky smirk. Should he tell her? Did he honestly even know himself what he'd done? It could have one idea, or maybe another idea that he'd had. Honestly The Doctor usually had plenty of ideas that required big friendly buttons. Even big red ones. Then again, maybe it should be a surprise for the both of them. Or maybe even just her alone. After all surprises could be fun and anything done by him for a friend would not be dangerous. He let those brows wiggle with mischievousness. He was definitely showing his coy face, not giving answers either direction.
"You know, I knew when I put it in, but now..." he gave a thoughtful look. "I can't remember. But!..."
He put a hand over it just in case she might decide to poke it, "Perhaps we should hold off on it...for now...just in case."
He kept a wry smirk on his face and just winked at her. It was almost as if he had some sort of plan for it. He just had to be playing something, that was for certain. It was only just a matter of time where there'd be an answer.

It made her feel quite smug, really, to be driving him around. Over the years she'd been subject to his flying her enthusiastically about in everything from the Whomobile, to Bessie to that crazy blue box of his. Her friend seemed to be taking it quite in stride, which she appreciated. If he'd tried to do any back seat driving, she probably would have gone overboard to show him just who was at the wheel now. Beyond a bit of smug with the spice of a thrill, she was feeling quite relaxed in an electric sort of way. There had always been that ease and excitement between them.
Oh, she was quite aware that something had befallen him, after all, here he was without a TARDIS and that befuddled look he'd had on his face, but she knew he'd be quite handy regardless. And fine company.
"Well, time with you is never boring." She flashed her friend a grin, looking away from the road for only a moment. Only a moment was aloud at the speeds she was driving now. Eager as she was to reach their destination, she tended to drive this way even when she was just hopping by the shops. Although she had not been tempted to push that big red button, the Doctor's reaction lead her to believe it would do more than just clean the windshield or anything so plebeian. Looking out the windscreen again she found a grand smile on her face. Sarah Jane Smith was always up for a good surprise. He might not even be teasing about not knowing what it did, considering how that eclectic mind of his worked. That the button existed was enough.
She wove through traffic, too busy to chat now, and soon had them a block from their destination. Much as the Doctor kept his TARDIS off the beaten path, she'd learned to do the same with her rather brilliantly colored little Bug. She parked it with a zipping grind of the emergency brake and decanted herself from the car. She supposed she should give him some sort of warning about what was to come, but it would take time and her friend had an amazing ability to improvise. Perhaps keeping him a bit the dark would keep his mind off of whatever it was had landed him in her here and now. The only clue she gave him was to hand him a clipboard that had a few mock-up pages for a 'safety inspection'.
"This time, you follow my lead, right?" When they reached the door, she introduced herself as Victoria Beckham, and Mr. John Smith, safety inspectors of HRM. The chap at the door seemed a bit confused, but let them in to the rather fancy office building.

Riding with Sarah Jane was lovely. It was sad that it wasn't a chatty ride, but he knew she was a focused woman. It wasn't like the TARDIS. Or when he drove a vehicle. Things were different. He had to meet Sarah Jane in the middle and that was fine by him. As long as it wasn't that got Sarah Jane into too much trouble, he'd do it every time. It was a nice ride though. Quiet, but nice. The sound of the vehicles engine sure was a nice purr. Nothing like his TARDIS, but nothing ever would be. Blast that old girl. How dare she leave him there! Dematerializing around him, what a joke. The Doctor mentally swatted the bitter thought away and let his gaze drift to the city streets that had passed by. He did truly wonder where they were going. It was almost itching that she was going to be the one with the cards in hand and not him. it was almost exhilarating.
Once they had reached the destination, he had, had to unfold his lanky body out of that vehicle like a road map. Not that it was Sarah Janes fault, this face of his now was just tall. At least it wasn't his fourth incarnations face tall though, now that would have been quite the nightmare. No his less few inches tall was just fine. He'd gauged the area, but couldn't figure out yet what the plan was. Even as he was given a clip board he didn't have a full picture, but he started to get an idea they were doing something they weren't supposed to.
"Inspector?" he more muttered to himself than to Sarah Jane. What sort of trouble were they going to get into? He was definitely curious now. He raised a brow at her point of authority wanting him to follow her lead. Well wasn't she just a tad sassy. It made him smirk a bit. He'd play along, for now. It wasn't like he'd not let someone lead a bit before. It might have been something new to Sarah, but with his changes and age he'd learned a lot to come trusting his companions along the way.
Luckily when they had reached the door, he'd had, had his psychic paper on him to help along the rouse. Most humans fell for it. So it wasn't any surprise they got in on his part. Once they got inside he gave the interior a once over.
"Ooo would you look at that, snazzy..." he mused already starting to take in things and lightly poking at things about him. Not enough to get into trouble, but enough to start trying to figure out what they might be dealing with. Plus it was just his way, being curious about things and all. Some things this face hadn't seen yet so everything was sort of a new adventure for him from time to time. But he stayed close to Sarah Jane. He knew she was capable. But that didn't mean he wasn't protective of his old friend. He still had some limits. But for now things seemed okay so he'd let her lead on.

It felt like having armor, having him with her. She took for granted that he was all in. Took for granted he'd be the perfect companion regardless of his occasionally annoying traits. It may seem like he danced through life like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz, but somehow the way he tumbled through an mystery came out better than anything she could have imagined on her own.
Though, he had been teaching her to believe in brighter endings.
With the expected grace, he got them through the front door with much less fuss than she'd been expecting. Through the years, she'd gotten used to talking just about anyone into doing anything, but the Doctor need only show off some bit of something in a wallet and they were through the front door with firm welcome. Sarah Jane could not help but fling a wink at him for his ability.
The Doctor poked about while she leaned on a cabinet and sweet talked the uniformed doorman. No uniform she was familiar with, and as she chatted with him, she did her best to log in details with the files she kept in her head.
"We need to take a look at the caliber of the old glass lines in your underground transport system."
"Do you have authorization from the Company for that?" The man asked with hesitation. Sarah Jane took a step and elbowed the Doctor, hoping he'd have an answer for that.

The Doctor had been idly snooping at something, but his ears were fully on and listening intently as he could. The great thing about time lords, they could multitask like mad. So when he heard the man ask and he could feel the change in atmosphere of the situation, plus a bonus on his and Sarah Janes past of intuition of working together, he was right there to give an answer as if he had done this a thousand billion times over.
"Do we have the authorization." he stated with a truly mocking look of take back on his part, the looked at Sarah Jane giving her a wink with the eye that wasn't facing the other person. "Do we have the authorization!? Well I never. Of course we have the authorization!"
He reached into his pocket and drew out the same psychic papers again, this time allowing for the credentials to be seen that they were as far as the paper was concerned said they were. And if the person questioned the paper in any fashion, he'd give the guy some fangled reason that sure the outer looks alike but the inside is definitely much not. But he pretty much almost shoved those papers up the mans nose. As far as he was concerned the perhaps if the man was too weirded out or distracted by nearly having psychic paper in his face, he'd not care to craps in a bucket what was on it in the first place. But gods was he ever so dramatic. At least a bit. After showing it he snapped it shut and gave a curt nod at the man.
"Authorized enough for you. Now, do you might not wasting precious time and let us get to work?" he asked curtly. Some of this behavior, believe it or not was drawn upon from his best mate Donna Noble. that woman's fiery nature was hot on and she got things done. He figured be hot on and present was what was going to get their job done. Let Sarah Jane be the level headed one. It allowed for his chaotic nature to flourish and be an unseen force to reckon with coming.

Sarah Jane was used to having full control of her investigations. As the Doctor went off, she felt like she might as well have brought a Golden Retriever in a bowtie. What the hell had she been thinking? It took everything she had to keep a straight face. In that moment of struggle though, she realized in for a penny, in for a pound. She backed him up by looking completely secure with the little fit he was having. That's all that really mattered. A united front.
The Doctor may not do things the way she would have, but he did know how to get the job done. She wasn't sure what it was that he showed to the man at reception, but it seemed to work. Sarah Jane smiled like butter wouldn't melt in her mouth.
The man nodded nervously. "It seems all in order." he said, giving them a sweaty smile.
"Indeed." Sarah Jane said, and in confidence, and followed the map in her head that she'd studied. She had only gotten schematics for the first four floors, but she did positively know where the Elevators were. Off she strode, hoping the Doctor would shut up and simply follow her. In a few meters, she was standing at the call buttons, and she jammed the one to go down.
She looked up at him with the same calm face she'd shown the doorman.
"Could you try not to shout at people? It attracts attention."

"I wasn't shouting..." he gave a semi wounded look, following. "I was merely being...expressive. Passionate. Maybe a bit dramatic, but hey it worked."
He tried to still keep a bit of a wry look though, "Learned it from someone who had bite. Honestly wasn't sure if trying to emulate would work or not. They were much better at it. But I'm glad it did. You by the way are as clever as ever."
He was totally buttering her up a bit. He might be a bit of a wild child, but he was always on top of things. At least he tried. He knew that he was definitely a bit different than what Sarah Jane remembered, but he was still him somewhere there inside his ever changing body. Their adventure was going to just be probably a bit more exciting this time round with this face. After all different face, different moves, etc. But he was definitely ready to take on the situation right along side his best friend.
"We got this." he encouraged and put a hand on her shoulder warmly.

Gosh, he was funny. There was no denying that, and no reason to. She laughed and leaned into him, both in her amusement at the Doctor, and for herself for being in this position. Sarah Jane gave his lean waist a good squeeze.
"Of course we've got this. This should be easy enough, I think."
There was a seemingly endless deluge of Aliens visiting Earth. Some lost, some found, and some that needed ass kicking. She suspected that this caper would land on the end of the list. However, it was all in a day's work wasn't it? And the Doctor, though a wild card, was even better at such things as this as she was. So be it. Right now, she was having so much fun, details didn't seem to matter.
Sarah Jane let the Doctor go, then game him a playful but firm slug in the arm.
"What was that paper you showed them?"
