Anaheim, California Disneyland August 1969
"I'm telling you Constance, that thing freaks me out..." A man dressed as a butler says as he enters the breakroom for the Haunted Mansion, followed by a woman dressed as a maid.
"He's an audio animatronic Henry, he's not that scary. Abe Lincoln isn't that scary, and he's a lot more lifelike than the Hatbox Ghost." Constance replies to Henry, sounding terribly unimpressed with the Hatbox Ghost character.
"Says you, miss I love Alfred Hitchcock movies. I'm telling you, I saw him move in a way that had nothing to do with his programing."
She rolls her eyes as she sits down at a table. "You listen way to much to the guests stories, just because the façade was built before the rest of the attraction doesn't mean the ride is actually haunted. Besides, the idea for this ride goes all the way back to the park being in Burbank, it just didn't have the Omnimover system then."
Passing her a drink and sitting across from her, he opens his own drink. "Something's weird about that character, and its got nothing to do with whatever the Imagineers cooked up."
"Yes, I'm sure he's stealing people's heads Henry." Constance drawls, opening her drink.
"Just you wait Constance, you'll see him do something weird, then you'll believe me."
The TARDIS
"Disneyland, the first theme park of its kind and the only Disney park Walt Disney himself ever set foot in. And biked through. Now there's an image, Walt Disney riding a bicycle through Tomorrowland..." The Doctor muses, pausing a moment in his jumping around the console. Then he continues speaking as though he didn't stop to think about Walt Disney riding a bicycle. "So, Disneyland, opening day. Whaddya say Rose Tyler? Want to see a young Ronald Regan?"
And he grins broadly at Rose, hoping she'll say yes, after all, who can turn down a day at a theme park?

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you "Disneyland!" Rose repeated with excitement. She followed The Doctor around The TARDIS, bouncing after him with joy. She ran a hand over the console, chuckling at the idea of seeing, or even meeting Walt Disney, as though it were your average day. The TARDIS let out a low groan in reply.
The Doctor was beaming at Rose and it was a wonderful sight. He wasn't normally so childlike, but like most people, Disneyland brought out the wonder and innocence in him. She reached up on tiptoe and rested her hands upon his shoulders for a moment. "Disneyland here we come!" She beamed.
Then she grabbed his hand and dragged him out the door. The sight that reached her eyes made Rose gasp. It was like walking into a fairy-tale. There was a distinct air of exhilaration and anticipation, and Rose could hear adults and children alike laughing and cheering as they lined up for opening day.
"I've always wanted to come here," she mused, taking in the sights. Her voice changed a little as she added, "Me and Mum, we used to plan what we'd do if we went. Could never afford it, not after Dad, but she knew it made me happy." A twinge of guilt tickled Rose but she tried to push it away. The Doctor was practically giddy with excitement and Rose didn't want to bring him down. Besides, she could always convince The Doctor to bring Mum next time... Right?

Her enthusiasm about being at the Happiest Place on Earth, it made him grin even more broadly, even as she revealed it was something she and her mother dreamed about. But he supposed it wasn't a bad thing to have in common with Jackie Tyler, wanting to see Rose be happy. And Disneyland, in any era, certianly did that.
"Walt Disney certainly got one thing right... and that's no matter how old you are, nothing beats a good day at Disneyland." He looks over his shoulder at the parking lot, which in the future he know's will eventually be where California Adventure sits, with the Esplenade that seperates the two parks. And he frowns, the cars aren't right... well some of them are, but the rest are of a different Earth vintage.
Then he looks at the crowd, waiting in line for the park to open and through the mix of hair styles and clothing styles he realizes... "This isn't 1955." And the Mark III monorail train further cements that its not the 1950's... the Disneyland Monorail wouldn't be opened until 1959, and thus wasn't an opening day attraction. Plus the Mark III's made their appearance nearly a decade later, with Monorail Green, which happens to be the one he's looking at.
He really needs to see an attraction poster, conveniently they're mounted on the fencing around the floral Mickey though he's too far away at the moment to make out the attractions being advertised, to be certain, but he can say for a fact. "This is 1960's Disneyland.... though that may not be a total loss, New Tomorrowland has a lot more interesting things than watching paint dry. Literally."

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you The Doctor's grin was infectious. He was beaming away like Father Christmas again. "If I knew you'd be like this, I'd have come here sooner," she told him with a laugh. It was wonderful to see him so light.
Rose nodded in agreement, taking in the sights (and even the smells -- was that donuts she could smell?), and following his eyeline. Her smile faded. Uh oh. She knew that look. "Doctor?" She asked, but he'd already spotted what he was looking for.
Rose rolled her eyes at him. She didn't care one way or another; she was just grateful to experience this, no matter where they were. Travelling with The Doctor... Rose felt she could quite happily do it for the rest of her life, and she'd be happy. She didn't need anything else. "You and your timelines," she quipped. "900 years of time and space, and you still can't fly the TARDIS." She grinned up at him. "C'mon, Time Lord, let's go explore!"
She took his hand again, and led him down the main street. Ah, the donut shop. So, her sense of smell was still intact! Various Disney songs were being played on the speakers, and Rose could see Goofy posing for a photograph with a kid. It was so wholesome. "So, where should we go first?" She asked, peering up at him.

On their way in he observes the posters lining the fence around the floral Mickey and several he expects, the Matterhorn, the Skyway... and other's are a pleasant surprise, but actually, help him date the park to the late 60's, like the PeopleMover, its a small world, and... perhaps most specifically, The Haunted Mansion.
"Oi! I do my best, s' a bit more complicated to drive than a car." He protests, perhaps a bit too loudly, at Rose's teasing of him. "Anyways, it's August of 1969, Apollo 11 finished its mission maybe two weeks ago. The Beatles are either about to or have taken their most iconic photograph, and Woodstock is about to happen..."
As they went down Main Street, he took in the sights, mentally thinking of how different it would look several decades later, in Rose's own relative time frame. And mentally congratulating the folks who made Saving Mr. Banks, for their accuracy in making Main Street look correct for the time the film was set in... of course it was easier for them as Disney did keep impeccable archives. And there were likely thousands of photos they could use as a reference, not just from the company either he notes, watching a couple take a photograph in front of one of the shops.
He watches Goofy take a photograph with another parkgoer absently commenting. "You know, that costume isn't half bad... but it's not hard to beat out the early Mickey costumes... those were a particular kind of bad." Then he turns his attention to Rose.
"Well, it depends... Tiki Room or Pirates of the Caribbean?"

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you Rose laughed and rolled her eyes. ”Like you’ve ever driven a car!” She jested, wondering in truth, how he managed to fly The TARDIS at all. The Doctor had given her little lessons every now and then, but it’d been complicated enough that Rose had let him carry on.
She listened to The Doctor as he continued his rundown of the decade's latest events, feeling cheerful as they made down Main Street. Maybe it was the effect of Disney World, or maybe it was just travelling with The Doctor, but Rose felt especially happy today.
She looked at The Doctor and was glad to find a peaceful sort of look on his face. It was unusual to see him look so carefree. Rose followed his eyeline to a Goofy that was a lot more dated than she remembered. ”Oh yeah, I think I’ve seen pictures,” she recalled, a little crease appearing between her eyebrows as she thought back to the few old Disney photographs she’d seen. ”I think Mickey would’ve given me nightmares as a kid.”
Her eyes lingered upon Goofy for a few more seconds before she came out of her reverie and returned to the present. Her mind focused on their next two choices, and she scrunched up her face, trying to think. ”Hmm… How about Pirates first, then Tiki?” She suggested, looking to The Doctor to see what he thought.

"Oi! I've driven a car, I'm a great motorist..." He pouts for a moment but lets it go, Rose has never seen his car. And for a wild moment he wonders where its being stored, but shakes it off knowing that UNIT's got it squirreled away somewhere since the last time he used it.
He nods an agreement to the early years of a walkaround costume for Mickey. "The opening day Mickey costume was borrowed from the Ice Capades, same with Minnie. Great for ice skating, bit nightmare fuel as a walkaround character, what with openings cut into the face so the skaters could see... and those things are a sight better than the Mickey costume used for the premiere of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. That one was actually worse... I think we can both be glad the company sorted it out and made better costumes for all the characters."
"To New Orleans Square it is!" He grins broadly, holding out his arm for her to take. "Brand new land in the park, only opened three years ago. First expansion to the park too... I wonder if I could get us into Club 33 with the psychic paper..."
As they walk, he takes in the park, still very young but just as full of energy as it will ever be. "If I'd landed later, we'd have been able to get Dole Whip before the Tiki Room... oh well. Guess we'll just have to get something else to eat in there."

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you "Of course you are," she teased, knowing full well that after 900 years, it would be a shock if he couldn't drive well. She suddenly imagined he had some flashy sportscar hidden somewhere within the depths of The TARDIS, and made a mental note to try and find it later. If the TARDIS allowed it. Normally she'd help Rose out if she was struggling to find something. They had a certain connection, separate from The Doctor. That time machine was in her head, and seemed to know her better than Rose knew herself.
Rose's mouth fell open as she listened to The Doctor's history lesson. "... Yeah, let's just say I'm glad I was born a little later in time. If they hadn't sorted out those costumes, I think I'd have been traumatised as a kid." She laughed and gave a tiny shudder.
The Doctor extended his arm for her to take and Rose grinned back at him, immediately curling her arm around his own. "Club 33... Oh! That's the private club, right? We have to go there! Psychic paper will work, right?"
"I don't care," Rose shrugged, knowing there was still plenty of things for them to try. "This won't be our only trip," she told him as though that settled the matter, and looked up at him with another huge smile. "How about we visit Disneyland in every decade? You can never have too much fun at Disney World!"

"Disneyland in every decade... I like that. And after nineteen eighty two, you don't even have to worry about ticket books!" He replies, digging one-handedly through his pockets to find a ticket book or two. "I do love a good E ticket in any era though... but certainly easier after they go to park admission give you access to all the rides instead of having to pay for the attractions separately."
Dodging a family who're a bit more interested in taking their photograph in front of the Tiki Room than being mindful of the fact they're in the middle of the walkway, he continues speaking. "An' yeah, Club 33's the private club. Something every fan of the Disney parks dreams of getting into, particularly here in Disneyland. It is the original after all, company just can't top the magic of this park, it's the one Walt himself dreamed up with his Imagineers."
He's also dodging the question about the psychic paper, in theory, they should be fine, but he wants to enjoy a day at the park before potentially getting the boot because the psychic paper decides not to work or says something decidedly not Disney friendly. "I guess we'll find out, the security now is a bit different than it is around your time."
As they walk through Adventureland he eventually finds what he's been rooting around for in his pocket and pulls out a handful of ticket books, looking down at them to make sure they're of the appropriate vintage. Wouldn't do to have tickets for the 70s in the 60s, might get some folks suspicious. Then he passes Rose a couple of them.
"Standard Disneyland attraction ticket book, A through E tickets, they'll say what they're good for on them. B tickets will also give you admission to A ticket attractions, and if you combine A, C, and D tickets it'll get you onto an E ticket attraction."

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you Rose's eyebrows travelled up her forehead as she watched The Doctor dig around in his pockets for a ticket book. She laughed, always amazed by how much he could fit inside those pockets. "Even your clothes are Time Lord, huh," she remarked, gesturing to the depth and size.
"I love that," she added, having always had a secret dream of meeting the man himself. "Hey, you don't suppose there's a way for us to meet Walt Disney?" While Rose didn't want to abuse her privilege of traveling through space and time, it would be undoubtedly cool to meet Walt. He'd been such a prominent figure in history and had practically shaped her entire childhood. "Have you ever meet him?" She added eagerly, knowing all too well that The Doctor tended to find himself intertwined with important figures. Charles Dickens at Christmas had been a special one, and an adventure that had stuck with Rose ever since.
Rose leaned in a little, resting her chin against The Doctor's arm as he pulled out a selection of ticket books. They were distinctly aged and vintage looking, but that just made them look better. She never imaged something as simple as a ticket book could look so magical. Disney really did have a special power. "That's a lot of options," she laughed, not knowing where to start. "I'll let the expert lead the way," Rose decided, and grinned up at him.

"Course my pockets are bigger on the inside, what's the use of pockets if they can't hold all your stuff?" He states more than asks because honestly he's seen some of the pockets humans put on their clothes. Or pretend are on their clothes, it's ridiculous. Everyone should have pockets that are actually useful... he just has a slight advantage over the average person. "Have to have my sonic somewhere."
"An' yeah, we could... I've always wanted to see the Burbank studio.... but surprisingly, no. I've not met Walt Disney, came close once or twice, an' I've met his brother Roy, but I've never quite been lucky enough to meet the man behind the mouse." The Doctor grins. "What's your favorite Disney movie? We can jump back, see the production of it.... lotta talented folks working for the company over the decades. One of the animators who worked for Disney was the guy who eventually designed the Scooby-Doo characters, Iwao Takamoto."
As they enter New Orleans Square, he can't help but admire the attention to detail that was put into it, it truly looks like New Orleans, a blending of a few streets certainly, but it captures the essence of the city. From here he can make out the facade of the Haunted Mansion and it's certainly befitting of a city with a reputation for ghosts, after all the building doesn't have to look decayed to be haunted.
"Jus' a warning before we get on line, this version of Pirates isn't going to be to your sensibilities, they weren't concerned with certain things 'round this time." Lord knew he'd gotten an earful about some of those very things from the various people he'd traveled with who were from this era, some more vocal than others. He could admit humans puzzled him sometimes, one group not considering something offensive until a long fight from the group who did pointing out how offensive it in fact was. And this attraction took the cake on that front, because pirates weren't exactly family-friendly, as cool as swashbuckler films were.

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you ”You have a point there,” she agreed. It had always annoyed her how small women’s pockets were on jeans. She could barely fit a coin in there, let alone a purse or a phone. The Doctor’s pockets of course, were another thing entirely. Full of Galifreyan energy, or maybe his clothes were all Gallifreyan and everything was bigger on the inside. She'd often wanted to ask about Gallifrey, but had always chickened out at the last minute. She didn’t want to upset him or make him dwell on things that would cause him misery. Besides, they were currently exploring the happiest place on Earth. Now was not the time.
Rose grinned, listening to The Doctor’s tale. ”What’s Roy like?” She asked curiously. ”Really?” She added, suddenly excited. The Doctor was always full of interesting trivia, she learnt more from him than all her school years put together. Admittedly, that was probably partly her fault for bunking off to check out boys, but still. ”I’ve always loved The Lion King. What about you, Doctor? Do you have a favourite Disney movie?”
Rose watched The Doctor’s face as they walked through New Orleans Square. He seemed very at home here, and Rose kicked herself for not thinking of Disney World sooner. When all of space and time was on offer, things could get a little overwhelming. ”Right,” she told him, before smiling a little. ”I imagine realism isn’t really what they’re going for at Disney World, right? It’s all about the magic, the imagination. That’s what makes this place so great!”

"Yup, he was even one of the folks who worked on Sleeping Beauty, which is arguably, one of the greatest animated films Disney ever put out. Pure art, but with the Nine Old Men helming it, it's hard not to be. They were the best... even if Aurora was difficult to animate." He tacks on to his little informative lecture about Iwao. "An' Roy is... well he's creative in his own right, but he's more the business side of things. But none of this would have existed without the both of them, working together. Roy just prefers the limelight less, though he's actually delayed his retirement to oversee the building of Walt Disney World, he's the one who named it that in tribute to his brother."
He grins at her. "Disney Renassaince should've figured. Elton John really did do a phenomenal job with the songs... myself, I lean a bit to Mary Poppins. Something about Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke is absolutely magical. But if I had to go with animation only, like I said, Sleeping Beauty is one of the finest animated films Disney has ever put out."
"An' your absolutely right! They're going for that bit of magic, imagination... that spark that pushes you humans to innovate, to go to the moon, Mars, to infinity and beyond... and well, pirates have always been rather fascinating to many. I think it's Errol Flynn honestly... something about that kind of swashbuckler is just... plain fun. And even if the history is glossed over, sometimes someone is influenced to research more deeply into the topic... I'm certain there were many a kid who was inspired by Pirates of the Caribbean to research that era of history just as Hercules influenced some to look into Greek myth. The information is there, it's always been there... an' if someone is encouraged to broaden their mind, their horizons, well I like to think some good comes out of it." He can't help but smile, thinking back to the past, the better parts anyways, of the friends he made along the way whom he not only inspired but inspired him.
"Also there is something magical about a Disney park, doesn't matter how old you are, there's something here for you to enjoy. An' it's even better with company."

And I followed my star and that's what you are, i've had a merry time with you Rose chuckled, enjoying the fact that The Doctor was so enthusiastic about Disney. It didn’t surprise her that he was knowledgeable, but the idea of him sat around a TV watching Disney films made her very happy indeed. She wasn’t sure why, it just did. She looked up at him affectionately, while he carried on explaining why Sleeping Beauty was the best.
”So, one was the brain, and one was the heart. They sound like a good team,” she mused. ”I think they balanced each other out.” She eyed him knowingly, and then flashed a smile.
”I haven’t watched Sleeping Beauty since I was a kid,” Rose admitted. ”Maybe we should re-watch it. You can let me know what I’m missing.” She made a mental note to pick up some snacks from somewhere, quite liking the idea of a Disney marathon. "But yeah, The Lion King is definitely the best. The music, the art, the story... I just love it. It was based on Hamlet, wasn't it?" She added, something in her brain triggering a memory.
He really did love this place, she realised. Or what it represented. That feeling that anything is possible. The human potential unleashed in one, giant park. That magic inside of all of them, that inspiration. That’s what The Doctor loved. Rose could see it, and she hoped she could do that for him now. ”I couldn’t agree more,” Rose said, giving the arm she held on to a squeeze.

"A fantastic team." He grins, thinking not only of the two of them as a team, but all his friends in the past and how great a team he'd been with all of them through the years and the faces. "Think the best teams balance each other, no matter if it's two people or enough for a football team."
Handing off two E-tickets to the cast member in the booth, he leads her onto the line for Pirates of the Caribbean. "An yeah you're right about Hamlet, though obviously, Lion King is a bit lighter than the actual Shakespearean tragedy, but they also did the wildebeest stampede in that film and traumatized a generation so..."
As they wait in the line, he takes in the sounds of the other people waiting in the line with them, talking about a wide variety of topics, and the smell of the bromine water. There's something about that chemical being used in the water for the ride that makes it so distinctive, it's as much a part of the attraction as the titular pirates.
"There's magic in bringing joy to people... what was it that Barnum said, for all his sins..." the Doctor pauses, thinking for a moment. "Oh.. The noblest art is of making others happy. Think he was right about that, even if it's just for a couple of hours."
