Susan’s TARDIS had brought her here, despite the fact that this wasn’t where she had intended to go. Nevertheless, she was here, and here she found herself among a tribe of Blackfoot Indians in what would one day become the state of Montana -- but not until 1889. This time of her arrival took place well before then -- and well before Eurpoeans began to arrive. She’d been with these people for a few days now, and they have welcomed her into their tribe with open arms -- to them, she was one of the Sky People -- someone who came from the stars to share new knowledge with them. In their people’s history, Sky People were revered, and Susan was being treated exceedingly well. Despite not initially wanting to have come to this time and place, Susan was now quite happy to be here. It was a much simpler time and place than she was used to. The people were friendly, the food was good, and the land was beautiful. There were no cities yet, so there was no light pollution, and you could easily see the Milky Way in the night sky. Susan decided that she would be perfectly happy living among these people for quite some time. River Song

As an archeologist, River was fortunate enough to be somewhat respected in her work. Even if she did most of her work in sporadic periods. Somedays she just did the bare minimum, but other periods she would bury herself in it. Of course, one thing was discoveries and another was having to write long articles about what you found. There was no doubt which bit River preferred. Experiencing history was always the best bit. Well, that or digging it up. One of River's colleagues were doing a study on early native Americans of Earth but lacked more information. These days River didn't need much more than a hint and she signed herself up as his research assistant, ready to get all the info, the best way she knew. Of course, not all archeologists, had time-travel devices at their disposal, so River had quite the one up, on all of her colleagues.
She had been at it, for a couple of months now. Riding from tribe to tribe, writing down the information as she got it, and also trying her hand at mapping out their locations on a map of her own making. River wasn't planning to go back anytime soon. She found solace in the wide-open spaces and not a person or structure in sight. The days without no company, but her own, did her well. Or so she thought for now anyway. Maybe once she returned to civilization, she would realize that she was worse off like that. But for now, she was more than fine with not having to put up a facade with anyone. Especially her husband. She loved him more than anything, but right now, she couldn't possibly face him, without feeling worse than she did already. Manhattan had changed everything. He needed time to heal and so did she.
Coming up over a hill, River spotted a village in the distance. Writing down a few notes about its location, she started mentally preparing for facing other people. No more sulking. Most tribes were peaceful and more than happy to teach her about their ways. Or to just let her sit around and observe. But there had been a time or two, when she had either had to settle for a location of a tribe, but nothing more. Or to fight warriors to get away safely. You win some, you lose some. River hoped this one would be peaceful though, she was still sore after her last fight.

Talk had suddenly sprung up about a newcomer heading towards the village. She was unlike any other person the natives had ever seen. Not only was her skin pale like Susan’s, but her hair! It was reportedly a mass of unruly curls. Perhaps she had come from the sky, too? Going on her description alone, Susan couldn’t place who the mystery woman might be -- and so she volunteered to go out to meet her. The Chief wouldn’t let their guest of honor venture out alone, however, and sent a handful of their finest warriors to accompany her. The group left the safety of the village behind and went out to meet the newcomer. Susan directed the warriors to stay back a bit, while she took the lead. ”Ahoy! Hello, there!” she called out, giving the oncoming figure a big wave. ”Are you lost, or do you require aid?” Susan inquired. And, boy oh boy… That hair was amazing. Susan wanted to touch it -- to give a gentle tug on one of those curls and watch it bounce back. Her own hair had never been curly -- not in any of her prior incarnations -- and whenever she tried to curl it, the curls never held for long, so the stranger’s hair was quite a novelty to the young Time Lady. As she got closer to the village, River could sense the buzzing and the rising number of eyes on her. It was the same with every tribe. Curiosity, but also precaution. This was the bit where River had to tread carefully, to not start a fight with anyone. Although the thrill of a fight was always fun, she didn't want to spill any blood. There would be plenty of that to come, for this people. She wasn't about to start that early, not if it could be helped.
What she hadn't expected, was to be greeted by another 'pale face'. They were a rare thing, around here at this point in time. Ahoy, she said. And the word stuck out about as much as the color of her skin. Frowning in confusing River halted her horse as she got closer and walked the rest of the way until she was close enough to talk. "I am not lost. I am recording tribe traditions, day-to-day life and locations" River simply said. If the woman started looking as confused as the first tribe she had met. River would know whether or not this woman was a traveler, like herself. No one said Ahoy in this day and age. And she had never had anything being translated into that. Unless she was at the coast and surrounded by pirates or sea-farers. Her Vortex-manipulator was safely packed away, to not tempt any itchy fingers. But River was sure that if this other woman was a time traveler, like herself, she would know the signs.

Susan couldn’t help but smile when the woman explained that she was recording tribal traditions -- not because she found such a thing to be amusing, but rather because in this time period, women did not venture out alone in the wilderness, and they did not record tribal traditions. Men did. The inequality between men and women was certainly no joke, however -- but again, that’s not what was making Susan smile. ”But, that’s excellent!” Susan exclaimed. ”I happen to have just befriended this tribe. I could introduce you, if you’d like?” she offered -- and then she remembered her manners and introduced herself. ”I’m Susan,” she said brightly. ”Susan Foreman.”The fact was, this woman was more likely than not a time traveler, much like herself. There was no TARDIS to be seen, though -- but perhaps she parked it a fair distance away? Or maybe she had some other means of time travel, like a time ring or a vortex manipulator. Susan’s eyes danced over the woman’s form, looking for something anachronistic -- something that stuck out as far too advanced for this time period -- but… Susan saw nothing. Her smile fell a little bit. Maybe she was wrong? River Song

"That would be very helpful" River smiled a bit and readjusted her pack a bit. This sure was a first, with the other tribes she had met, she had been very much on her own. Sometimes she had even had to bring a gift, to show that she came in peace. To have help would be a very welcomed change. River barely got the words out, before the other woman introduced herself. Then all the pieces of the puzzle fell into place. "Oh! Susan! It's a pleasure to finally meet you" In all of her travels, she had never been lucky enough to run into this time traveler before. She had come up from time to time, when River was studying to be a professor. Not nearly as much info as there had been about her grandfather, but still enough to know who she were. "I'm River Song, an .. acquaintance of your grandfather." Normally River was far from uncomfortable to call herself the wife of the Doctor. But to introduce yourself like that, to his granddaughter, just seemed wrong. At least considering that she didn't know the other woman at all.
River had hidden the vortex manipulator, both because she didn't want to have it stolen. But also because it might make the locals treat her differently. Either like they thought she was a witch or some kind of higher being. And as much as River loved being treated like royalty, or make trouble. This time she wanted to pass through, more or less unnoticed. Or, well, as unnoticed as someone like she could go, at this time in history.
