The Doctor noted that the "champers" they were meant to enjoy didn't quite have the right taste to it. He looked at the label and saw why: it was an Aquilian vintage, and not a very good year, at that. He'd remind the server when they returned to bring something Terran.
He listened with rapt attention as Sarah Jane spoke boldly, proudly, and passionately about her travels and doings since their last meeting. He beamed as she told tale after tale, so deeply happy that she'd grabbed life by the reins and made it exactly what she wanted it to be. As much as he often missed her bright spirits, adventurous nature and valuable wisdom, he was thankful that she'd found her way after they parted. She deserved every thrill and every lovely experience life had to offer.
"Well, look at you...my Sarah Jane, a brilliant shining star blazing through the night. I'm so proud of you. And make sure you tell that boy of yours I said hello, right?"
When Sarah Jane asked how he was faring, the Doctor's joyous demeanor changed somewhat. He still looked happy, but there was sadness behind his eyes. "Well, you know me...traveling through time and space, fixing things...breaking things and then fixing them...never a dull moment. Had a few rows with the Daleks, the Cybermen, even the Zygons. There was...eh...someone who traveled with me...and something happened. I lost her...significantly so, because I can't even remember her name, or what we did together, or...anything. So many empty spaces, Sarah Jane...so many holes. I'm alone now, but I don't like it. Too quiet, yeah? Echoes of memories rattling about, and I can never get close enough to catch one."
The Doctor let out a shaky sigh, before forcing the dark cloud that had fallen over him with a breezy hand-wave and the return of his usual toothy grin. "Enough about that, though, eh? This is a time for celebration, and let's keep it that way!"

He was so old. She could see that clearly now. Not just his face, that had never had much correlation between how old he looked in a human way, and how old he had become measured by years of travel. So much pain in him. It seemed to come in waves before he could come up for air. Poor sod. It didn't make her love him any less. Sarah Jane had actually always appreciated his moods. He tended to say the most prophetic things when he was in a mood. She reached forward and briefly closed her hand over his. As she leaned in, she caught his eyes and wouldn't let go.
"I asked because I wanted to know. I don't expect your life to be easy, it never has been. You know you can tell me anything. Maybe I didn't always want to hear it, but I've grown up since then. Please . . .don't try to be human for me, I like you exactly how you are.
"I'm sorry about your friend. It sounds so painful to not be able to even remember." Her dark eyes went from soft to serious. Her voice dropped low. "Doctor, how long have you been traveling alone?"

"A long time, Sarah Jane. Longer than it should ever be," the Doctor admitted, the smile he'd tried to put back on falling off quickly. "Long enough to feel when things are getting too quiet, too empty, too dark. You understand, though...right? I can't just grab any random person and pull them aboard for shenanigans across time and space. It has to be the right person...like you. I still remember when we started running together; I'd never felt more sure of myself having you travel with me. It has to be like that...and when I think about what had to have happened to my last companion that I'd wipe my own memory, I don't know if I can trust myself."
The waiter came by and the Doctor made sure to request a Terran bottle of champagne. The waiter complied, informing them that their food was coming soon.
"You know," the Doctor said, "you're always welcome aboard the TARDIS with me, right? The Doctor and Sarah Jane...another go-around now and then, for old time's sake."

It was so lovely to hear him speak. She'd always found him so expressive and brave and fragile when he opened up like this. Her throat tightened at his tale of woe. Sarah Jane controlled her breathing so as to not interrupt this moment with the distraction of her tears. She shifted her hand to hold his.
Where the hell were you when he needed you? She chided herself strongly and listened on. The next thing the Doctor did was say everything she had ever wished he had. Sarah Jane had never been certain if he had felt the same way about those crazy days, and even a few more days along the way. Now he was making it clear. Some long held worries that perhaps he had tired of her were finally brushed away.
She found a smile growing on her face. She did her best to slow it down, not wanting him to stop. She was both pleased by the invitation, and amused that he'd come to it so round about. Had he planned this? She didn't think so. She blinked away the tears that had not fallen and they caught in her lashes.
"You know you can trust me." She said, quite seriously though part of her smile remained. "I'll keep you on the right path until you know you can trust you." Sarah Jane squeezed the Doctor's hand. After the terrible news he'd told her, she shouldn't be smiling.
But she'd been offered the golden ticket a second time, and she could feel a thrill within her.

The Doctor wondered if he understood Sarah Jane correctly. Was she agreeing to travel with him again? Would she take the risk of another run with him through time and space? He knew he'd be delighted beyond measure if she did; he'd missed her terribly, and it was always such fun to have her there. Whenever she thrilled at each new discovery, he learned to appreciate them all over again, as if he was seeing it through her eyes. That feeling had been absent for far too long.
"I know you will, Sarah Jane," he replied, grinning from ear to ear. "You always have; I shouldn't think you'd stop now."
Finally, the food was served, and the delicious smell of his meal reminded him how hungry he was. The pair ate and reminisced about previous adventures. Everything was delicious, and the conversation had them laughing at the wild and, at the time, scary things they'd encountered.
When the meal was done and their plates were taken, they popped the nearly-forgotten champagne and the Doctor raised his glass.
"To Sarah Jane Smith - the most brilliant star against trillions; the one I'll never stop looking for."
He took a drink from his glass and was thankful that it was far more palatable than their previous choice. He looked off to one side and smiled as the chef brought in a big frosted cupcake big enough for two with two brilliantly lit candles.
The chef, the Doctor, and the patrons nearby began to sing "Happy Birthday" to Sarah Jane as they presented the dessert to her. When everyone finished singing, they all applauded and the chef excused himself to go back to work.
"Alright, Sarah Jane...make the best wish ever."

"Oh, pfft, don't be silly." She chuckled over his drama, none the less there was a bright smile on her face as she knocked over some tall, exotic fruit garnish on his plate with a flick of her finger. She felt herself splitting into two parts in that moment. Part of her felt obligated to Luke and his future. Earth, and it's future.
Part of her was just overjoyed.
Besides, he would get her home before tea. Before Luke or the Bannerman Street Gang had a chance to miss her for more than a day or so. Mr.Smith would tell them that the Doctor had come, and she believed they would understand. They would have to.
For all the many times she and the Doctor had traveled together, he had always gotten her home, and she believed that he would do the same this time. If they were gone a week or a decade, he could still drop her right where she came from to uphold her responsibilities.
Might they die? Perhaps. There was always the possibility even though Sarah Jane was well aware of the lengths her friend would go to to keep her safe. Weighing the pros and cons though, as she did in that moment, taking care of the Doctor for a while was a heavier responsibility than anything else she had taken on over the years. After all, he was one of the most powerful beings in the Universe, and having him unraveled was no good. Well, then, she'd just have to pick up stitch then wouldn't she?
For all her wool gathering, there was an inevitable thrill ramping up inside her. To travel with the Doctor again? It was quite the thing. As she basked in the warmth of this sudden new future, they unraveled the past with both shivers and giggles as she worked her way through a delectably fresh meal with all the delicacy of a Catholic trained School Girl with a Light Appetite.
Then her birthday bun appeared, looking rich, dark, and about the right size. A few bites for each of them, and a candle just for her. A wish of her own. She'd had too many birthdays to believe she need keep her wish a secret.
"For a good future." She said, her dark, dark, hazel eyes catching his as she spoke, then she closed heavy lashes and blew out the candle. All hail to the future, but her present was gong quite well right now.

The Doctor clapped, grinning happily as the candles were extinguished in one easy puff. "And there you have it; it's fated to come true."
While he appeared as happy as could be, he couldn't entirely extinguish the burning fear within him that he'd put Sarah Jane in terrible danger on their new travels together. She had a family, a life away from him, and it had been hard-earned. Certainly, he could have her back so soon it would be as if she'd only left 30 seconds prior, but knowing that her life would once again be in her hands and thinking back to the others who had entrusted their lives - Rose, Donna, Amy, Rory, River, and the mysterious "Clara", the one whose face and memories escaped him - and how he'd failed them. IF the same thing had happened to Sarah Jane, he'd be inconsolable.
And yet, could he afford to be without her? If there was one thing all of his companions had told him, it was that he should never travel alone, and he knew why. He'd start to forget the person he was supposed to be and start becoming the person he could be, and that could be truly dangerous.
"So, birthday girl," the Doctor spoke to shake himself out of his doom-and-gloom inner thoughts, "this whole planet awaits our curious minds as soon as we pay our check. Where do you want to start?"

It was indeed fated, now that she was to travel with him again. As a team, there was nothing they couldn't accomplish. Now that she was older and wiser, it seemed even more certain. And Earth needed him perhaps even more than it needed her. Her choice was both simple, and self serving. Not just that Earth would be safer, but more importantly that she was getting back on the TARDIS, and spending Time with the man she adored. He really always had been her best friend.
Sarah Jane knew that she would stay with him as long as it took for the shadow of pain behind his deep set sea-green to lighten. Oh, she could see that he was as happy to see her as she was to see him, and that they were having a marvelous time, but she could still see it. Even subtle as it was. She'd known him for a very, very, long time. Different faces of course, but she could always recognize the core of the man deep behind his eyes.
It wasn't a sad thought at all. She knew she was the right person at the right moment, and that it was going to be quite the ride. In answer to his question, she grinned with a bit of teasing skepticism in the cant of her jaw. A slim finger with a silver ring tapped at the jeweled broach he'd put on her.
"Were you teasing me about this thing being a force shield? If you are, you're in trouble." Now that finger was waggling at him.

"When have I ever teased you about something like that?" The Doctor asked, a mask of innocence on his face. When countless memories of his journeys with Smith came to his mind, however, he removed that mask and smiled awkwardly. "Never mind; a few more than we have time to count. But THIS time, I'm happy to say there's no tease. That will protect you; I promise."
He and Sarah Jane left the restaurant and came to the water's edge. The air was still comfortable and breezy, with a fresh hint of tropical fragrance.
"Alright, ready?" the Doctor asked, his eyes twinkling with excitement and whimsy. "Tap the jewel on the bracelet once." He demonstrated by tapping the jewel on his own bracelet. A glow surrounded him for a second at most before fading slightly. "That's the shield; barely visible so it's good for silly stuff like...selfies. Also, waterproof, so we're not soaking the entire time."
The Doctor took the first few steps, now calf-deep in water before turning to meet the eyes his former - and, once again, current - traveling companion. Holding out his hand, he beckoned, "Come on, Sarah Jane. One more time around, eh? The long way?"
They proceeded further out into the sea, and deeper underwater, until neither of them could be seen. Below, a narrow platform moved into place just below them for a flat surface. The underwater paradise awaited them.

"When have I ever teased you about something like that? Never mind; a few more than we have time to count. But THIS time, I'm happy to say there's no tease. That will protect you; I promise."Oh, such a face. He was so elegantly expressive, his emotions so complex. Not only had the years brought him depths of emotion and experience, but after such a long friendship she could read him like a book. Back in the day she might have gone after his fleeting thoughts like the Investigative Journalist that she was, but time had taught her that pain like he was carrying would not be healed in in an hour or a day. Sarah Jane was struck again that this was no brief visit, and there would be time over the long haul. Besides, since now she knew that the Doctor was telling the truth about taking a walk through the water, she wasn't about to spoil it. "Well, it would be quite the jape if you could trick me into walking into the sea for my birthday. In this dress, no less." She said warmly, rather amused with herself. She walked arm in arm with her friend down to water's edge. "Alright, ready?" "Always." Sarah Jane answered simply, and took instructions to work her shield. "Oh, that is posh." She smiled as she began to glow after a flash that had made her blink. She felt like she'd pulled off a magic trick. Instantly the feeling of the breeze on her stopped. By her third breath, she was certain there was plenty of air, but it had made her nervous there for a moment in a rather reflexive way. And now she looked down at the water. It had been one thing while they were sitting at the restaurant to contemplate how lovely it would all be. It was another thing now to imagine the water closing in over her head. What would that be like? Sarah Jane wondered, watching The Doctor wade in. He turned back when she didn't follow, a very handsome, upright old gent, as graceful as he'd ever been. There he stood, lit warmly by double suns, his silver hair blazing from them. He reached out a hand for her, his eyes telling her everything would be alright. "Come on, Sarah Jane. One more time around, eh? The long way?" She gave a smile and a little shake of her head. How could she resist? Taking his hand, she stepped into the water. Just like he said, she couldn't even feel it except for how soft the sand had become. "The long way." Sarah Jane agreed, and followed the Doctor into the sea. They went like children, side by side and hand in hand. She could feel the water a little now, but only because of the weight of it that slowed her down as it reached her chest. Her shoulders. She'd be going under first, and gave the Doctor's hand a squeeze as she took a last big breath before her head went under. Rather automatically, she closed her eyes at first, just following her friend. I promise, he had said. I promise. Sarah Jane held onto those words as she made herself take a breath in. It was all absolutely fine, just as much air as their had been on the shore. Her eyes popped open, and she loosened her clutch on her friend's hand. It was beautiful. The soaring succulents and palms that shaded the land above were abundant here not only fancifully miniaturized, but vibrantly colored. Different from colors she was used to on Earth, but she supposed the orange and blue suns above must bring a different rainbow. The fish were definitely fish, though they were of entirely different sorts. They reminded her more of swimming vegetables, from eggplants to carrots. There were just enough to make it exciting, and most were just lazily ignoring them, going about their fishy business. Evening had come, but the suns were not yet truly setting. Would they both set? She wondered as she looked up to see their light streaking and glinting on top of the water. After one more look around, noting that the corals (or whatever they were) resembled stained glass tiffany lamps, even including a warm light glowing in the center. The beauty of it all had shocked the nerves right out of her, and she looked over at the Doctor, beaming, wondering what he was thinking of all of this as they walked along in slow motion on the sea floor. The sights beneath the vast ocean waves of Aquilia were enough to amaze anyone. From the abundant sea life and the plentiful underwater plants to the exotic coral formations, sprawling underwater caves, caverns and rock formations, there was no shortage of wonders to behold. One would think a Time Lord as ancient as the Doctor would've grown tired of such things, having seen so much that would move most people to tears of either joy or fear. It was quite the opposite for him, however. Aquilia never failed to leave him in awe and delight.
"So much life, untouched by the corruptions of man and machine, not motivated by greed or conquest, with no need of war or material things. There isn't just survival here; there's LIFE, rich and vibrant...and happy."
He found himself momentarily choked up, and he swallowed hard, blinking a few times to force away an embarrassing display of blubbering. He glanced over at Sarah Jane. "Well, what do you think?"
Just as he asked for her opinion of their surroundings, a gigantic whale began to swim beside the pair. The ocean depths carried its song so they could hear it. "Hildegard! You lovely lady, you!!! How long has it been?"
A melodious tone filled the space around them, as if the whale was replying.
"That IS your name! Remember? We discussed this. It suits you! You're a perfect Hildegard. Oh! My manners!" The Doctor gestured over to Sarah Jane. "Sarah Jane Smith, the one and only. I've told you stories about her! Sarah Jane, this is Hildegard."

She thought she'd been settled by the sudden beauty around her, but nothing in the Universe could calm her as much as the Doctor's voice, there in her ears. Sarah Jane hadn't known they'd be able to talk to each other. The last of her nerves simply melted away as she listened to him, both lost in his words and pleased they could converse. Along she walked in soft silt, water all around her, but none touching her or even dampening her red dress. "You always liked a good walk in the woods." she agreed in her smooth and somewhat husky voice. She was quite touched by the catch in the Doctor's voice, and knew she'd made the right choice in following him under the water. This is some of what he needed, and some of what she had needed as well. It struck her all in such a way that her pressing duties on Earth were starting to slip away. She wouldn't have wanted any other job in the Universe, safeguarding her home planet, but sometimes it did become a grind. Sarah Jane looked around, finding fish instead of birds, both in flocks and in colorful singularities. "Och, Doctor, it's more beautiful than I could of dreamed."Then something was singing in her ears. Unmistakable and throughly enchanting whale song. There it was, a huge shape drifting their way. Sarah Jane looked over at the Doctor to deduce what he thought of this new revelation. After all, she wasn't entirely certain what her high tech diving bell would protect her from. By the look on the Doctor's face though, and the joy of the greeting in his voice, she need not worry. Still, her heart sped up as the creature, Hildegard apparently, came near. Stars, she was big. Sarah Jane felt her ego expanding nearly to the same size as the Doctor spoke of her. Apparently had spoken of her before. No, as promised, the Doctor had not forgotten her. "Hello." Sarah Jane greeted her with a smile, and boldly reached out her hand to touch the creature. A thrill went through her as understanding was clearly seen in Hildegard's giant eye, so near. She knew she was welcome. "Och, what a beauty you are."
Sarah Jane threw the Doctor a smile twice as bright. " Whatever the Doctor has told you, I promise I'm very nice, and not nearly as prone to a sprained ankle as he says. How are you, Hildegard?"
