The Doctor studied the Queen Anne Style Victorian, absently noting the construction workers coming and going, which gave the home life, but even with that life, Sarah Winchester's home was rather spooky in his opinion. He wasn't sure where exactly she was in the grand sprawl of the seven story home, which he knew was littered with architectural oddities in its maze like construction, but he knew she was around somewhere, spooked by ghosts. At least the people working on her home were well paid for their troubles, she may have been eccentric and rich, but she was the kind of eccentric who paid well.
Breathing out a sigh, he started up to the manor's front door, thinking on how in a few decades this particular Victorian would inspire one of the most famous haunted house attractions in the world, and how Victorian homes in general would come to be equated with being spooky and haunted, in part due to the Addams Family, another part due to Psycho. Disrepair or not, the homes had a way of being imposing in such a way as to make you think twice, even with the often mismatched architectural details.
Nodding at a couple of the workers as he passed, they gave him a nod in return, assuming that he was working on the project like they were, and he couldn't find fault there, he didn't exactly fit the idea of a man who would have a reason to visit, he was dressed more working class. And he liked that, in this body. A couple of his other selves, they would've fit the period a bit more as gentlemen, but he wasn't them and hadn't been them for a long time.
"Well, let's see what the famous Winchester House has to show me pre-earthquake.." He says to himself, climbing the steps to the porch.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ All good stories often got inspiration from somewhere and Sarah Winchester's home was a prime example. Even for a mansion, it was an oddity, more a maze than a home. More importantly, there were rumours of it being haunted- a belief no doubt born from the ignorance of humans. After all, if there was one thing that the Time Lord knew to be true it was the nonexistence of magic. Perhaps there was something afoot within the mansion, but it was hardly something as foolish as ghosts.
For his own part, the Master had come to the home on what could almost be called a whim. Curiosity had flickered within his mind and with it a plan. The house would work well for his means and it would not be difficult to go under the radar if its own owner believed it to be haunted.
The first step would obviously be inserting himself into the narrative. This was not a difficult task. Far more along the extravagant nature, the Master easily blended into the Victorian era as a gentleman. Placing himself into Sarah Winchester's good graces was easy work.
Going into other parts of the house was a touch more difficult, to the point that he was tempted to just hypnotize the woman and be done with it. Standing in the foyer, he casually listened to the woman as workers went in and out.

Grabbing up some discarded tools, so that he wouldn't stand out too much because it would look odd to seemingly be working on the house and not have any sort of tools, he makes his way inside, pausing a moment to take in what he sees so far of the place. And gets the attention of one of the construction workers, who chuckles.
"First day huh?"
He nods. "Yeah... I uh..."
"It's a strange place, but Mrs. Winchester pays well and you'll put up with a lot of strange stuff when you're paid well."
It's then that the Doctor remembers that for the many years of construction the house saw, on and off on the whim of the mistress of the house, the workers were incredibly well paid for the period, of course they'd be okay with odd requests like basically walling off whole completed rooms or doors to nowhere for that kind of money.
"Anything stranger than Mrs. Winchesters plans?"
"Eh, not that I've noticed, but stay in any dark corridor too long and you'll find yourself a bit spooked... some of the guys are more superstitious than I am though, what with her penchant for the number 13 and spider webs. Doesn't help some folks feelings, nor the fact that you know ghosts may be present, practicing their terror with ghoulish delight."
The man then gives a nod. "See ya around then..."
"John." Calling himself the Doctor to a construction worker is just bound to raise questions.
"John. M' Gene." And with that the man, Gene, walks off to another portion of the house, leaving him to figure out where to go in the maze. Lord only know's where there's work being done.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ It quickly became apparent to the Master that he was likely not going to glean anything from this conversation. This wasn't too surprising. He already knew Sarah Winchester to be just as superstitious as any other human, foolish enough to believe in things like ghosts and other impossibilities that simply could not be. However, if he wanted to get anything done, he could only entertain her for so long or, rather, give the pretense of doing so. As a result, he was quick to catch onto the first opportunity to leave.
As she casually mentioned having to check a certain part of the house- due to the remodels- he saw his chance. There was a clear note of hesitation in her voice, something he was certain was fueled by her trepidation of what might exist despite her knowledge that she should be keeping up on the work that the people she was paying were doing. As a result, he allowed a charming smile to cross his face. "I can look for you," he offered, "I should be able to recall the way there. You have been quite thorough thus far."
It wouldn't matter either way. If he took too long she would come up with her own ideas, ones he doubted would be too logical. Moreover, he did not plan for her presence to be here too long. It was not as if it was too important, in the long run.
With a bit of polite reassurance, he was able to convince her. He only partially took in what she told him afterwards, not entirely interested in what she really desired him to be looking at. With that said, he left to head further into the maze of a house, hardly realizing that things might be a bit more complicated than he expected.

(Sorry about the weirdness, had a post ready to go, website decided it didn't want to share it and gave me an error message. So I had to rewrite it.)
Having managed to get himself turned around, which to be fair wasn't hard given how much of a maze this house was, and hitting a couple of doors to nowhere, the Doctor finds himself standing at the start of a hallway that sets his teeth on edge, and he can't for the life of him explain why. Maybe the Apes and their superstitions have finally gotten to him, or maybe its just the house, Victorians always have been a bit unsettling and this one takes it to new heights. Whatever it is, its not exactly a comfortable feeling, he's a Time Lord. There's always an explanation, but he just doesn't want to search for it right now because something about the way the hall is lit is making him twitch and want to avoid it.
"Limnal space..." He mutters, turning away to find his way around to another part of the house, hoping that he doesn't cause another worker to jump out of his skin. That must account for some of the ghosts people claimed to have seen in this house over the years, the fact that this house doesn't seem to really have a place in time and the fact that there is a truly staggering amount of windows, catch a glimpse of movement out of the corner of your eye in a window or through a door... perfect storm for the imagination to run wild. And humans' imaginations truly are something else, Alfred Hitchcock certainly understood that, if the shower scene from Psycho lived in people's minds so readily, genuinely scaring some people into not being able to take a shower.

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ While the Master's mind was focused on his plans, it uncharacteristically began to stray for once. As much as he was fine with meddling with time in ways that other Time Lords would have found beyond troublesome, he was not beyond feeling uncomfortable by abnormalities within it. As a result, it was easy for him to tell that something was incredibly off with the mansion, enough so that whatever the humans were noticing might be somewhat real. They just, as could be expected of lesser life forms, did not understand what they were seeing. It was all magic to them- a fool fancy of foolish life forms.
The question was whether he should look for the source or ignore it? He obviously didn't like the feeling, but that didn't mean much. Always one to enjoy poking things just to see what would happen, the Master diverted from his original path. For all he knew it might prove useful to himself. The worst of things usually did.

The apes have gotten to him he decides, once he gets to a portion of the house he actually recognizes. Don't get him wrong, he loves his human friends and humanity's limitless potential, but sometimes they drive him up the wall and this is one of those times.
He stops for a moment and looks around, wondering why it seems vaguely familiar before it hits him. "Bloody Haunted Mansion...." and then continues walking. The layout of the theme park attraction is less convoluted than this place, even when it was a walkthrough. Eventually, though, he comes upon another person, well he hopes so anyway, he had a couple of moments back there where he swore he saw someone but closer inspection proved there was nobody in sight. But as this man seems to not be some trick of the light, he figures the man is real.

❧ The Master eventually chooses to walk and walk. At some point, he is distantly aware that the shape and form of the house is somewhat familiar. Of course, this is not because he has actually been here. There are only so many places on Earth that the Time Lord has been and most he went to when he was drastically younger, nothing more than distant memories to him now. Whether he actually recalls them well is another thing entirely. After all, meddling with time always has consequences and sometimes his memories are the price. Sometimes they are heavier.
What he does know is that this is only familiar because pictures, could haves, and would haves he is just as aware of as the air he breathes. He does not expected to actually find anybody here. Sarah Winchester believes a lot of things, but these things are not necessarily true especially when one considers that she thinks the source is ghosts and other nonsense. It is far more likely something beyond her understanding is at work. Though, if anybody is here they're probably just as unfortunate as she thinks them to be.
As such, he is a bit surprised when his searching brings him across someone he belatedly realizes is alive and real. There's something else about the other man- something only a Time Lord can know about another- but it does not immediately click.
"Hello."

"Hello there." He replies, and for a second he swears he sounded like Ewan McGregor, but that's probably just his imagination. And the lurking feeling that he should know something about the man he's just spoken to, but he can't quite place it and so, he moves on.
"First day, got lost. This place is a bloody maze." Honesty is for the best, there are probably very few people who can navigate the home without much issue. "John Smith by the way, Mr..." The Doctor draws out, not knowing the man's name and trying, trying, to be polite.

❧ There is something decidedly familiar about the other male, but the Master cannot place what. He's never seen this man, never seen this face. There is the feeling that he should know, but he can't quite place whether he's simply missing something obvious or if this place is simply so wrong that it's distorting his perception. As things currently are, either seems possible. There is undeniably wrong with this place.
Where it might worry another, it only makes the Master more curious.
"Duncan Dalton," he says, lying as easily as he breathes. A charming smile crosses his face, attempting to exude an understanding he does not feel. "Quite understandable. I'm afraid it can be quite easy to get lost in without knowledge of where to go. I presume you were attempting to go somewhere specifically?"
