JUST JOINED JOURNAL,
- the newbie guide of fish & chips
- the newbie guide of fish & chips
FIRST THINGS FIRST,
- Hi! Welcome to Fish & Chips! I hope you are enjoying your visit/time here! There isn't a whole bunch to read or anything that would warrant immediate confusion, but I don't want anyone to feel too lost trying to navigate through everything. There is a list of links under the "click me!" option at the top if you like to travel in the fast lane. But, just in case you feel all turned around or want some form of organisation, I've put together a little guide and step-by-step for those thinking about joining and those who have just become a member. Maybe it'll do wonders!
- So, firstly, you are going to want to read THE SYNOPSIS. Now, this might seem a little nontraditional and backwards, but I feel like the excitement really starts here -- it comes from what the site is all about, and it gives you a good idea of what to expect for us.
- Secondly, and probably the most important stop, please be sure to read THE RULES. This outlines all the guidelines and regulations of the forum, as well as what we expect of members, the characters, and role-play. Don't be intimidated -- they are shorter than they look!
- Once you have got the rulebook and synopsis under your belt, you may want to swing by the THE FAQ to fill in any gaps and questions you may be wondering. Knowing these facts and q&a's about the site could come in handy and be beneficial down the road.
- Anything that you don't see answered in the FAQ thread, you are welcome to ask HERE or in the shoutbox below. Also feel free to get to know our other members through INTRODUCTIONS and OUR DISOCRD!
CHECK IT TWICE,
- Once you've got the basics down and have decided that you do like our wacky community, it's time to decide on a character if you haven't already had one in mind. This can be the part that could potentially take the longest, given different variables or indecision regarding what kind of character you want to make. My advice is to go with your gut, or rely on what you know. If you think you can portray a character fairly well and have always wanted to try your hand at them, go for it! But, first let's look at a couple of things before we register.
- If you are considering making a canon character or have your eyes set on a particular canon, you may want to look at the CANON LIST to make sure the one you want isn't already taken by another player. It may also help jog your interest in a canon you weren't sure about before! Alternatively, if you're dabbling with the idea of making an original character, make sure to check the FACE-CLAIM LIST before deciding on a play-by for your character to be sure that the celebrity face you want to take isn't already in use.
- Once you have a character sorted out, it's time to make your account. Click "Register" at the top right of the page, and fill out the Proboards form. This is where you make your character account, since you will not need an out-of-character one here. Usernames can be anything, though it's preferred if they were your character's name or related to it in some way. Note that Proboards is capable of linking accounts of a particular forum via the same email address, which allows you to switch between characters more easily if you decide you want more than one later on.
- After making your account, you will need to change your character's display name to read your character's name as follows: "firstname lastname". To do this, click on the option at the top that says "hello, [your username]" and click "edit settings". This will take you to your profile, mini-profile, and account settings, and you can change your Display Name under the "Personal" tab, along with the rest of the custom fields that show up in your mini-profile when you post something on the board. This is also where you can change the default avatar to a 200x200 picture or a 200x200 gif of your character under the "Avatar" tab. Just make sure you save your changes for each section!
APPLICATION PROCESS,
- Now that you have gotten everything squared away with your account, it's time for the real process to begin: your application. You will find the application template HERE. Please "Quote" the thread and copy everything between the two [ quote ] and [ /quote] tags.
- Then, go to the PENDING board and click on "Create Thread". Paste what you just copied into the "BBcode" tab, and fill it out. You are welcome to submit unfinished or "work-in-progress"/WIP applications and work on it for a few days. If you know you need more time to apply for a character or if you don't want to risk anyone else taking the canon you're applying for while you complete your application, feel free to reply to THE CANON LIST to make a 7-day reservation. This allows you to have 7 days to work on your character so that no one else can apply or claim them during that time-period.
- Once your application is finished, please be sure to make the thread title of your application as your character's "lastname, firstname", like "harkness, jack". If it is a Doctor or a Timelord/Lady with a similar alias, please format it as "doctor, the third". If the thread title is not formatted correctly, we cannot accept the application.
- Please be patient! It may take staff up to three days to review your application, especially if it's an original. However, if you don't hear anything from us after four days, please shoot us a gentle reminder about your application, and we'll get to it as soon as possible! Please do not be discouraged if you are not accepted right away! Sometimes, it's small things that need editing -- like grammar, character placement, or a discrepancy we noticed. Other times, we may have a hard time understanding your character and need clarification, or perhaps feel like they aren't just right for the site. Please try to work with us when requesting other options if the character doesn't seem to quite fit into the world of Doctor Who. More often than not, we will try to reach a compromise that suits both people and parties involved.
LET THE FUN BEGIN,
- After being accepted, you're probably buzzing with energy! So happy to be playing the character you had wanted to write for so long. Posting everywhere, creating all sorts of threads. But, what else can you do? Well, there are several things we recommend! Note that all of the steps below are completely optional though!
- If you have just made an original character, it would save us a lot of trouble if you wanted to reply to THIS THREAD to claim their face! But, if not, that's okay. We'll add their play-by soon.
- Now that you're a true trait of our community with your own character, you can properly reply to the MEMBER DIRECTORY and/or INTRODUCE YOURSELF to everyone, if you'd like!
- Of course, to help further along plans and plots and potential with your character, we would love it if you made a SHIPPER/PLOTTER PAGE for your character, detailing their persona and how they would handle different relationships. Who they love. Who they hate. Who they could like.
- If you wanted to get really organised with their in-game timeline and keep track of all your roleplay threads, you could also make a TRACKER for your character.
- And, what if you really want a character on-board for your character to interact with, but they are currently not taken? Well, that's why we have THIS, so you can post your wanted ads and wanted characters! Hopefully, someone will see it and be inspired to make them!
- Here's to hoping that you have enjoyed this walkthrough, and have found this guide helpful and comprehensive. If not or if you have any further questions, you can always ask it in the discord channel, in the "Curly Cues and Statements" board, or send me a private message!
