It was always summertime somewhere and the Doctor did have a gift for finding it. Sometimes, anyway. Today he'd gotten it right. Very right. Sunshine had everything bright around her, the deep green leaves, the shining black berries. The sparkle in the corner of her eye of a lazy river. In her ears were the sounds of it's burbling, the buzz of insects that seemed to be leaving her alone, and the punctuation of birds chirping. Berries plopped into her bucket one by one. When she'd started, each one had made a sweet plunk as it hit the bottom of her sun warmed tin bucked. Now it made not a sound as berry landed on berry. Fewer and fewer, though, as she was come over by their syrup sweet perfume lured her into eating nearly as many as she collected. To save her from the thorns, she was wearing green garden boots and her denim capris. To save her own clothes from a stain, she was wearing one of the Doctor's endless white shirts, tied up at the tummy and folded back at the sleeve. A worn and woven straw hat with a wide brim gave Sarah Jane her own patch of shade to protect her pale skin. The tips of her fingers and the corner of her mouth were stained with purple juice. Sarah could not have been more content. the fourth doctor

He wasn't sure why she had settled on something as strange and primitive as this. It was so ordinary, so completely and utterly human -- one of those little, beautiful moments that mattered so much, even in the grand scheme of things. The little things. Moments like this is what made homo-sapiens so indomitable -- so they could keep having an infinite amount of finite memories and moments.
Green covered the hill as far as the eye could see, and, from what he could gather, it almost seemed like something similar to Sarah's old hometown. What was it, again? Leadworth? Surry? Aberdeen? He was quite certain it was Aberdeen, though he could never quite put his nose on it. Who knows? he thought amusedly.
But, ah yes... as his blue sapphires peered across the scene, he definitely accounted that it was something magnificently splendor and reflective of whence his brunette companion had came. Which was why, he assumed, she seemed so fond of it.
He followed her idily, having given her his white shirt in exchange for a new one, his coat draped knightly across his shoulder. He'd left his hat amiss somewhere, but now he realized he needed it, as his eyes squinted against the brightness of the sun and he bared his teeth against its humidity, pulling at his scarf ever so slightly to loosen its hold.
The curly haired timelord stopped and scrutinized the scenery as the beautiful journalist picked berries, analyzing the trees that were a bit too green. He couldn't help but feel like something was out of sync, that the atmosphere wasn't quite right. Though, perhaps, that was just because the birds seemed a bit too chipper for his tastes. "Are you sure this is the place?" he questioned, puzzled by the absence of civilization, and how grass and bark just seemed to stretch for miles. His hand scooped up a berry, in which he polished upon his shirt for good measure. "I don't know, Sarah. I'd thought you would have picked something much more fruitful." He plopped the juicy morsel into his mouth with an amused grin, glancing over to briefly meet her eyes.

Once again, her tall friend had missed the point. Sarah Jane extracted herself from the fine bush she'd been plucking from and went over to where the Doctor stood. Without asking, she looked into his berry pail.
"Tsk tsk." she exclaimed with a shake of her head as she looked up at him. Green, pink, purple, whatever color, ripe or not, he'd been plucking from the bushes. Sarah Jane stepped boldly into his space, fitting herself under his arm as she perfectly could. She raised her cupped hand under a bunch of berries right up near his gaze. giving them a light touch from thumb and fingers. Gently she touched the bunch, the ripest few falling into her hand. With her other hand, she lifted his and poured the chosen few into his palm. "You're not doing it right.
"Just the very ripe ones. They're almost falling off. Here, try one of these." She was grinning at her brilliant friend missing such a key point of berry picking.

The Doctor furrowed his eyebrows a little in slight confusion as he watched Sarah gather the berries ever so effortlessly. She was questionably proficient. "Forgive me if I'm wrong," he began huskily in a tone that exhibited some prickle of prudence, "But, I don't see where berry-picking is wildly essential, unless, of course, you plan to bake something using them as ingredients." There was a hint of humour to his words, but they seemed overshadowed by his judgement -- and the addition of an alternative. "In which case, we could easily venture to a planet known for its abundance in universal and extraterrestrial fruits -- Hydraedra 13. It has quite the reputation." Afterall, he still didn't fully understand what they were doing here in the first place, and if they were going to be frolicking through beautiful fields of flowers and berries, as it were, it seemed as if the prospect would be much more exciting on a planet with an eternal and incomprehensible supply at their finger-tips. Not to mention that Hydraedra 13 had a very intriguing diamond that had just recently went missing.
He stared at her curiously, not finding fault in her or her methods, but for her magnificent brain. He understood her, of course he understood Sarah. She was his beautiful best friend. And, he knew, she was quite intelligent and a spectacle to behold. But, sometimes her reasonings did not make a bit of sense to the older timelord. His blue eyes darted from her brown gaze to the plump participle that rested betwist her fingers, and he accepted her offer, examining the small black fruit slowly before placing it into his mouth.
Much to his surprise, the one she had given him was interestingly enough better than the first one he had had. "Hm," His face softened into thought. "I see what you mean. That's not half-bad, actually. Good work, Sarah." he commented to his brunette companion with somewhat of a new insight. Then, his blue sapphires turn to her in slew of a question. "What did you say you were using them for again?" He couldn't quite recall what she had said. Or, perhaps, he hadn't been listening. It had been a while since she they had been in the TARDIS. Sometimes, his mind would go far off into imaginary adventures and/or contemplative avenues, and leave his company behind. Especially if what they were saying were not interesting or specifically important to the task at hand.

"Oh." She laughed, full throated, "As if you could find 'Hydraedra 13' if you tried. And if you did, it would be the one year there were a thousand hurricanes." Again she reached out and took the perfect bunch of ripe berries and teased the best of them into her hand. Again, she dropped these into the Doctor's hand, trying to win him over to the beauty of the day. She had learned that with persistence she could win him back to being in the moment, and chase away all those glum thoughts of eternity that seemed to eddy around him.
"We're here. It's a beautiful day. And I DO NOT bake. What's the matter with having them by just the handful? 'Grand old tradition with humans. Picking berries."
Sarah Jane turned toward him, only a couple of handspans away. She squinted up at him against the sun, her amusement clear on her face.
"I just intend to pick and eat them. I don't suppose you were poised to bake a pie?"
