People say that you never know when your life will change. It was true of course, you never knew if an evil witch would swoop in and kidnap you, or you'd try to kill Hitler and accidentally get shot and regenerate right in front of your parents and your future husband. All that was true, but even now, 10 years in, River was still taken aback by how much her life had turned upside down, since that dinner at the Singing Towers. All of her life, River had felt a bit like a leaf in the wind. Just drifting from here to there, living for the days when she saw The Doctor or her parents. The most she had stayed in one place, was when she was studying and teaching on Luna.
Living with The Doctor was something she had only imagined, in her silly fantasies. It was something she would never have dared to hope would happen. To be honest, she was quite happy with their arrangement. She had never known anything else and they had seemingly both agreed that it was better that way. It had to be that way, to keep their timeline intact. And of course, there had been tiffs, the first couple of years. But by now they had ironed out most of the kinks and seemed to work well as a team. Most days. Of course, they were still people with big personalities and that was always going to create sparks. But it was nothing they couldn't work through. Even with that, River could confidently say, that this was the happiest she had ever been. The only negative was that there was an expiry date on their time. And it was already getting closer way too fast, in her opinion. Ten years was a long time, so was 24. But River could already tell now, that it wouldn't be enough. She didn't know what would happen at the end of those years. But she had a bad feeling about it.
For now, though, River was stepping out of their bathroom, fresh from a shower. She had no idea what time it was. River didn't need as much sleep as humans did and The Doctor needed even less. So sleeping through the night wasn't really a thing. And since it was always dark outside, it was tricky knowing what time it was. In any case, River did a good stretch and walked down the hall, towards the kitchen. She had just had a nap, before her shower and she, therefore, didn't really have an idea where she might find her husband. Their house was modern, but still quaint and comfy, with a spare room, to park the TARDIS, for easy access. It was no secret that they would probably both go insane if they had to stay on this planet for 24 years straight. Plus getting away meant they had so much more time together than just 24 years. Stepping into the kitchen, River quietly put on the kettle, before she walked on, still in search of her husband. "Sweetie?" She called out, stopping in her steps, to wait for a reply.

The Doctor's eyes opened and then widened in surprise.
He'd slept. Actually, truly SLEPT. Only for a very short time, of course, and certainly not in the most comfortable of spots- the chair behind his antique wooden desk in the library - but it was pure sleep nonetheless.
It was River...always River. Both exhausting and comforting, she was every bit the wife he knew she could be, and only she could put him in . She was a veritable festival of paradoxes, and to the Doctor, that was both a warning bell and a siren's call, neither of which he could ever resist.
He was intent upon spending every single second of the 24 years that made up a single night on Darillium with River. When the mood for adventure struck and they took a jaunt in the TARDIS, he made absolutely sure that they'd return the moment they left, so no time was lost. That rigidity was the source of many a tiff between them, but he dug in and planted himself in that decision, because he knew that eventually, it would all have to end, and he hated endings.
River's pet name for him played upon the Doctor's ear, and he strode out of the library to intercept her. "Right here, River." He took in a deep breath. "Ah, the kettle's on; bless you." With his usual wide, toothy grin, he took River's hand in his and kissed it.

When the Doctor had first revealed how long this night would be. River had thought that she would go stir crazy before even the first month was up. But it was surprisingly peaceful. The adventures were still as chaotic as ever, nothing had really changed there and River still thrived in that as much as she ever had. But so also thrived here, on Darrillium, in the dark and the quiet. In the home, they had built together. It was comforting, always returning to the same place after each adventure. In a way, it had never been on Luna.
Greeting her husband with a smile, as she approached him, River walked up to stand in front of him. She almost blushed as the Doctor pressed his lips against her knuckles. Normally it took quite a bit for River's cheeks to turn rosy. But apparently, the Doctor not being afraid to show affection towards her, was enough. Even 10 years in, she was still getting used to it, it seemed. "I thought we could use a cup" River replied, before linking her arm with his and started lazily walking towards the kitchen.
"What should we do today?" River asked, herself just as much as the Doctor. Every day here held endless possibilities. So much so, that most days it was difficult to pick. Thankfully the TARDIS sometimes had better ideas than they did anyway, so they ended up going somewhere completely different than they had planned. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. But always an adventure. These days the question was more if they wanted to stay in or go out. As they arrived at the kitchen counters, River set to preparing their tea, finding cups, and putting a bag in each cup, while she waited for the kettle to boil.

"The easiest and the hardest question to answer," the Doctor acknowledged as he pulled a plate from one cupboard and then retrieved a package of Jammie Dodgers from the other. He'd found a taste for them again not long ago, recalling that his previous self took a liking to them. The adage held true: the more things change, the more they stay the same.
River's question still hung in the air over them as the Doctor set the plate of biscuits in the center of the table. What should they do? Discover a galaxy? Mediate a conflict? Open the world's biggest intergalactic shopping mall? No, the Doctor thought to himself. We did that last week...or yesterday; hard to remember sometimes.
"All of time and space awaits us. There's so much we can do, and many things we shouldn't but probably will anyway," the Doctor quipped, winking at River. "Oh! Perhaps MiniWorld! We haven't been there in a spell! Wait...hmm, they might still be cross with me for stepping on their capital city. Thank goodness it was empty, at least." He stole a Jammie Dodger from the plate as the kettle began to whistle. He took a bite, chewed and swallowed before speaking again. "We could pay a visit to Jim the Fish! Maybe he's finally finished that dam he's always 'almost done building'," he suggested, making quote marks in the air with the last few words. Jim the Fish was always doing some sort of work on that, promising that the next time he and River stopped by, it'd be done...but it never was.
While River poured the tea, the Doctor grabbed the sugar and cream and added it to the table before sitting. "There's always Tellorax Five. I understand the reversals of gravity are back to every hour on the hour instead of every half-hour. If we go there, though, remind me to give you the motion sickness inhibitor; you had to buy that Ood a new hat last time."

While she waited for the water to boil, River turned around and rested against the counter, watching her husband walking back and forth around the kitchen. When he winked at her, she felt a rush of butterflies in her stomach, as she grinned back at him. "We both know, we have the most fun, when we're doing the things we shouldn't do" Thankfully they didn't differ in that area. It would be terribly dull if she couldn't get him into trouble with her. "Next time we go to MiniWorld, we'll have to make sure it's much later than last time. I'm sure they'll remember your face for generations.. I mean, did you see that opera house? It was stunning" River couldn't help but rub it in a bit. Even though it might as well have been her, who accidentally stepped on a major city.
As the kettle started to whistle, River picked it up and poured some water into both mugs. She smiled to herself as The Doctor mentioned Jim The Fish. He was a dear friend, but if River was honest, she was quite sure that he would never finish that dam. There was always something to improve or replace. He would never be satisfied with it. It kept him busy, but it was still fun to tease him about it.
Picking up the, now full, mugs, River walked to the table and sat down opposite her husband. She put down his mug and pushed it towards him. Giggling a bit at the memory, River blew on her tea, even though the bag hadn't even been in long enough, for the water to have turned into tea. "But he looked so handsome in that tophat" She laughed. As she remembered it, he hadn't actually been too excited about it. But River had had to fight to keep from laughing. "I wouldn't mind going there, if I don't vomit.. We could just let the TARDIS take us where she wants to go. That's usually how it goes anyway" Plus, not knowing was always exciting. "Or we could stay here.. And do absolutely nothing" River flashed a more flirtatious and seductive smile.

River was absolutely right. They never needed a destination; mayhem seemed to find them wherever they went. It was rather remarkable, in all honesty, how calamities seemed to gravitate towards them, but oh, how fun it was to resolve those crises together. The adventure, the wit, the romance of it all; the Doctor and River Song, blazing through time and space with the intensity of a thousand suns.
The Doctor playfully smirked at River's comment. "Oh, the things we get up to when we do absolutely nothing," he said suggestively. "I seem to recall we're still wanted on Niagara Five for trashing that honeymoon suite. We did a lot of nothing there, too."
He took a sip of his tea and said, "Let's just go anywhere...a random choice, a dot on a map, a spin of the wheel. We'll let the TARDIS take us wherever and whenever and we'll see what deviltry we can fix and get into at the same time."
River brought this more saucy side of the Doctor out so strongly. Her devil-may-care approach to life was so easily contractable. She reminded him of the whimsy that came with life and how it wasn't a cardinal sin to engage in it.

Stirring her tea a bit, River took a sip, smiling into the cup as the Doctor spoke. She remembered their time on Niagra Five fondly and vividly. And it showed in her grin. "Some of our best work, was done in that suite, thank you very much" Thinking back on it, if she had had any sense of modesty, she would blush. But modesty was not a word in River's dictionary. So all she could do was smile devilishly about it. She was just glad they hadn't been the ones who had to clean the room.
Picking a destination was so difficult when you had all of time and space to choose from. Even if you, like they, had traveled for many years. You would only have seen a small speck of what was out there. Even if you never visited the same place twice, it would take forever to see everything. "I'll go anywhere with you" To be honest, somewhere random was the most exciting. It could be anything, what could be more exciting than that? Even if they ended up somewhere horrible, it was still more interesting than knowing where they were going. "I'm sure we'll find some sort of trouble to get into" Wrapping her hands around her cup, River took another sip, already looking forward to whatever today would bring.

"Oh, I'm counting on it," The Doctor said, his toothy, wicked grin once again on full display. Adventure, spiced with a dash of mischief, awaited...but there was no need to rush through morning tea. These quiet moments - "before the storm blows in", as some were wont to say about him - were to be equally cherished. When the Time Lord rested his time-weary eyes upon River, it was a renewal of his spirit, an electrical jolt to his twin hearts. He needed that now and then, after so much running, so much...loss.
Once morning tea was done and the cups, saucers, spoons and kettle were clean, the Doctor, with River at his side, strode to the waiting TARDIS. The creaky police-box door opened to reveal the darkened console room. The poor dear; she needed her rest too, the Doctor had reasoned. As illumination and the familiar whirs and beeps of the console began to fill the room, however, the Doctor was reminded of how little it took to encourage the TARDIS to whisk her Doctor to elsewhere...or when.
"And good morning to YOU," the Doctor greeted as he approached the console. "Care to do the honors, River? Anywhere and anytime...surprise me, as you're so skilled at doing."

It didn't matter, how many times they had traveled off of Darillium, or how many times in total, that they had entered the TARDIS. It still made butterflies appear in her stomach. It never got old. The number of possibilities, that lay at your fingertips, was a rush every time. River flashed a smile in his direction, as The Doctor spoke. "I think it's more her than me, but I'll take the compliment" Standing at the console, River put in some coordinates, that she honestly didn't know, if they would lead anywhere. Well, they would lead to somewhere, for sure. But it might as well be absolutely nowhere, just in the middle of space. It was more a suggestion than a destination she wanted to go to. " Take us somewhere fun, eh?" She murmured at the levers, before pulling the one that sent them into the vortex.
For a few moments, the TARDIS rocked and tossed, until it landed with her usual sudden boom. River wasn't the only one who liked to make an entrance. Not bothering to check where they had landed, River headed straight for the door. It took most of the fun out of it if you read where you had landed first. It was much more fun to experience it. As the door opened, River was hit with a nice big wave of moist air, similar to what you would get, near the equator on earth, in green areas. It was light out, but closer to midday, than morning. Of course, if they weren't on earth, it could be any other time of day, depending on how long its days would be, and so on and so forth. "Oh.. very good start" River smiled back at her husband, while she waited for him to join her at the door.
