Cardiff. 1977.
Something had been growing. An energy, first nothing more than static, but as the days passed one could actually see small bright glows. As it went, even crackles of sharp blue like electricity arching. No one noticed though, not really, for the phenomenon had started with only milliseconds, and those hours apart. Little by little though, it came more often and for longer. Long enough that anyone walking the wharf tonight might have noticed it like Saint Elmo's Fire. It had grown both exponentially and algorithmically. Steady enough to set your watch to. Steady enough that it was clearly reaching a critical point of size and strength.
Only a fool would have been out in this storm to see it.

Jack, despite the predicament he was in by having to travel the long way around through time, had a few things he thought he could enjoy while he was miserable the rest of the time. One of those things was actually catching one of the most iconic movies ever in cinematic history...Star Wars. Not just any Star Wars though, no it had to be the very first one ever. The spark that lit the match to a whole slew of fans and an epic empire franchise of further movies and collectables to conventions. Jack had played witness already to some of the future stuff. But to see it be born into existence, now that was not something you got to do everyday. Not unless you traveled time. It wasn't like he could just pop off in some TARDIS like The Doctor. No he was stuck going the slow route, and even when he could travel time with that screwy vortex manipulator of his, it still wasn't anything quite like riding inside a time machine like The Doctors. Boy wasn't that a bitter taste in his mouth and mind. The Doctor, so rich how he had left him there on Satellite 5 not truly aware of the fact whether he'd been still alive or dead or not. Granted there was a part of him that did wonder and believe The Doctor actually had known. That he'd left on purpose because of this fact. This left him to want to give The Doctor a piece of his mind after all he'd had enough years to think of how and what to say. It was just now a matter of implementation.
However, at the moment, he wasn't thinking about that. No instead his mind was buzzing from the movie. It had been so good seeing it on the big screen, cheesy as the effects were. Problems of a fifty first century traveling con man. But he respected it for its time period in any case. Jack came out of the theatre with a small smile on his face as he thought about the storyline of the film. He supposed the part he enjoyed most of all was the relatability of Han to himself. They both had realistic goals and values, and honestly if he'd been in Hans shoes he probably wouldn't have believed in the Force stuff either. Also there was a part of him that wouldn't have minded having a big Wookie for a friend.
His smile faded though as he began to take note of his surroundings and that feeling in his gut rose like a swelling sea wave. Something was up, he could tell. He was still somewhat a time traveler after all, and being a paradox on top of that just didn't help. Plus the rift in Cardiff always seemed to make his skin crawl when it was active. It was like one big warning bell for his brain. Just enough time with The Doctor gave him that certain sense to know when things were amiss. And this was one of them. It was time for Jack to be a good little Torchwood minion and see what the deal was. Man if he was in charge...things would be so different. He wouldn't treat his employees like the way he'd been treated by Torchwood all those years since the day they found him. It was nice to keep busy, but he hated being a "slave" to the organization practically. Pressing his lips together a bit, he gave a determined look. Well, if Torchwood wasn't on top of this one yet, perhaps he could get a head start and maybe keep the rest of the team away long enough to keep whatever it was, especially if it meant no harm, out of Torchwood's fingers. After all Torchwood wasn't exactly kind to anything different. Jack had to do some pretty unspeakable actions in his time with them, and that would live with him the rest of his existence he was sure of it.
So naturally he took off in the direction of the chaos, determined to find out the answers before the rest of Torchwood could get there to pick it clean like the scavengers they were. One day, one day he would make Torchwood right. Perhaps doing that, would honestly make The Doctor at least see him or proud or whatever, he honestly didn't know at this point. In any case, because of who and what he was, he was the crazy man to go into the eye of the storm. Why? Because he knew he could come out the other side of the storm if things decided to go sideways on him. Blessing or curse, whichever way one wanted to see it as, of being a paradox and unable to die for good was a thing he could live with using in the meantime.
"All work and no play makes Jack a good boy..." he sighed to himself, hands in his long trench pockets as he walked away from the theatre. "More like...dull boy. Oh well..."

The light, which had been the odd flash days ago had become a flickering strobe with the occasional witch's wand of lightning that sprouted forth. It hummed and crackled. It became a crack between one world and another. In fact, there were a handful of people in existence who would recognize that crack all to well. A dark spot appeared in that bright light. Growing suddenly, it resolved itself into a person that tumbled through and fell a meter onto the boardwalk. It was a woman's voice that grunted on impact. Still, she was up on her feet in the next second, a slight young woman with dark hair and a frantic nature. She reached back into the breach, but her hand recoiled like she'd touched something hot. "Doctor! Doctooor!" Then she was reaching in again, hand disappearing into the light, though clearly it hurt her. Jack Harkness

Of course the one thing that could really make Jack truly run, was the one trigger word to send off all the alarms and bells in his head, Doctor. All this time he'd been spending his existence so far searching, waiting, watching for any sign of The Doctor. While simultaneously trying to stay out of the way of history for the most part. It of course made his gaze cruise everywhere about the scene as soon as he reached it.
"Doctor?! Where?!" he called out. "Is he here?!"
Clearly he was not, or he'd have not left a woman so obviously it seemed in peril to her own demise. That didn't seem like The Doctors motive at all. In fact he was sure that The Doctor was more likely to swoop in and save every lady he'd come across. And honestly he thought he was a horn dog some days. The Doctor couldn't really talk. Not after he got left behind. And one day that man would get a piece of his mind, but clearly at the moment that day wasn't going to be today. Instead he was once again left to tidy up whatever mess The Doctor left behind. All be it his Doctor or one of his other incarnations it seemed. No thanks to Torchwood of course.
"Hang on!" Jack then called and dashed over, clearly yank tackling her away from the anomaly in space time. On the ground he held her shoulder and looked at her squarely, a part of him still in Torchwood mode, "Where is he, where's The Doctor."
When she didn't respond right away, and Jack finally had a second to realize what was going on and where he was, and who he really was, and that she was probably just some frightened girl; he finally caved in with his tough agent gig and gave her an honest concern question, "I'm sorry, are you alright?"

Her arm was burning! Burning. Enough so that she tried to free herself of the void she had reached though. Then something, no some one had knocked her sideways and knocked her free. Enveloped by strong arms, she found herself hitting the ground. Pavement even, but strong arms protected her as she went down. By the Stars, he smelled good, and his arms were careful around her. Where was the Doctor? Sarah Jane pointed up at the crackling void, hoping any second her bescarved and curly headed Doctor was just seconds behind. Although she had been trying to pull him through, she'd been stopped. Ignoring the man's question, Sarah Jane leaped to her feet, doe light and tried to reach in again. She found herself quickly stumbling backwards as long, familiar arms reach back in kind. Not the Doctor's arms, but the long, strange arms of the creatures who had been haunting her and her friend. With a squeal, she was stumbling back, ripping her arm free and turning back to whomever it had been who had broken her free in the first place. As she twisted and looked to him, her first though was that he was rather ruggedly handsome. Her second thought was that his face was full of questions. Then the creature was breaking through the rift, and Sarah Jane was doubling back quick, hoping the fellow would help. Hoping he had a car. "Run! Run!" she screamed, reaching out. Of course the Doctor had sent her into the arms of help. She was also furious the Time Lord had not followed. Climbing through the rift was a creature of long limbs and pale skin, disturbingly something like the Silence, but not close enough to be suddenly killed. The things, for there was another right behind the first, had been after her and the Doctor for weeks. "Run! Go!" she screamed, finding the mans hand and trying to run down the street. Anything to get away from the monsters after her. The Doctor would have to damn well take care of himself. Sarah Jane's job was to stay alive. Jack Harkness
