✧ THE DEPTH,
PERSONALITY. Ian's a generally cheerful chap who takes life as it comes and makes friends easily. He tends towards the practical: if you need someone to do some science or a bit of fighting, he's your man; if you need a friendly ear to tell your troubles to, then best pick someone else, unless you want him to find a fix for them. Although he doesn't show his emotions easily, he does worry if the situation warrants it, or if Barbara is in trouble.
He is generally more protective of women than the women appreciate. He is the typical hero, putting himself in harm's way without a moment's thought.
He does like science and teaching, but is stuck in 1960s thinking and anything that shakes that up takes him a bit of getting used to.
His sense of humour tends towards making you groan rather than laugh.
BIOGRAPHY. Ian had a normal childhood, albeit one that included growing up during the Second World War. Since conscription still existed when he turned eighteen he did two year's of service. It was during that time that he learnt unarmed combat and sword fighting. Two skills that would come in handy during his time on the TARDIS.
After that he qualified to be a teacher and by 1963 was teaching science at Coal Hill School in Shoreditch. It was there that he met Barbara Wright, who taught history at the same school. The two of them became friends and one day Barbara came to him with the strange case of Susan Foreman. He agreed to go with her to Totter's Lane, where Susan claimed to live in a junkyard.
Once there, they heard her voice coming from a police box and stepped inside, only to be greeted with something that was bigger on the inside. And the First Doctor who was not happy about his secret being discovered. Rather than giving the teachers the chance to tell others what they'd seen, he took off.
Ian was still reeling from the whole bigger on the inside concept when he found they were somewhere else. And in a different time. He was forced to accept that the TARDIS was a ship that could go anywhere in space and time when they were in danger just about everywhere they went and there were more important things to worry about.
At this time the Doctor had no way of controlling where the TARDIS went. At first Ian and Barbara wanted to go home, but they realised the Doctor couldn't get them home. Eventually they forgot about going home because they were having fun.
After the Doctor left Susan on Earth in the 22nd century, they went on to rescue Vicki from a spaceship crash.
Ian had the dubious honour of being the first human to be shot at by the Daleks. Fortunately they only paralysed his legs temporarily. It was after the Daleks got time travel of their own, and were defeated, that one of their machines was left abandoned. With the Doctor's help, Ian and Barbara used it to return to Earth. But it didn't quite go to plan and they arrived two years after they'd left.
Getting another job was tricky after an unexplained two year absence with a sudden disappearance. But as much as he'd enjoyed their adventures, Ian was happy to be in the same place and time for an extended period of time, where he could go to the pub and watch cricket matches in the park.
During their travels he'd fallen in love with Barbara. After they returned to 1965 he managed to get his act together to let her know. Following that they got married and had a son, John.
He would have been happy living a perfectly ordinary, boring life, but once you know about aliens it's impossible to ignore them. He doesn't go out looking for trouble, but sometimes it finds him. On one occasion he was contacted by UNIT to help them out, while the Doctor was gone.
OTHER/MEDICAL INFORMATION. He's not a great swimmer, but is a good singer.
SAMPLE. Ian sighed and retreated to the corner of the cell. Despite its primitive nature it was impossible to break out of. He would just have to wait for the Doctor to talk the guards into releasing Ian. Which then be followed by a lecture on getting himself captured and some smugness about how the Doctor went about arranging Ian's release.
Ian wouldn't have minded so much if he knew what he'd done to be put in here in the first place. He'd been leaning over the side of a bridge and had the idea of pooh sticks, the concept of which he'd had to explain to Vicki. He'd found a stick to throw in, to demonstrate. The next thing he knew this planet's police had frogmarched him to the jail, ignoring his and Vicki's protestations.
The cell didn't contain anything, so he was forced to sit on the cold, hard ground. Which he then discovered was damp. He looked up: it was raining and the roof was leaking.
"It's going to be one of those days," he muttered to himself.
