Ian is one of the very first companions, from back in the 60s. He will come across as a bit old fashioned, therefore.
He and the Doctor didn't always have the best relationship as they were both trying to be the alpha male of the group. But by the time Ian left, the Doctor was upset about him leaving and Ian will be friendly (mostly) with any future Doctors he encounters.
Speaking of, if anyone playing the Doctor isn't familiar with Ian, there is a load more information on the TARDIS wiki and I am happy to answer any questions and offer you any help. Just as a warning, Ian struggled with the concept of the TARDIS, so he's not going to be any better about regeneration. The first Doctor he gets to thread with will have fun with that...
Other than the Doctor the person on here that Ian knows best is Susan. He has met River in an audio (before he met the Doctor), but the beauty of Doctor Who canon and timey-wimeyness is that we can decide if that's happened to them both, neither or just Ian. Obviously he has something in common with all the companions, but more so with Clara since they both taught at Coal Hill School.
I like both pre-plotted things and spontaneous lets see how it goes things. Or a vaguely plotted thing with some surprises.
