„Come on Rose, goo time to waste.“ the Doctor called, grinning as he shrugged into his coat and at the same time headed to the TARDIS door at his customary not-quite-a-run pace, eager to get outside and explore. „The sun is waiting, and so is Earth’s legendary history!“ After the events at that parallel world, all the metal and steel and artificial menace they had faced, he had decided he wanted to spend some time at the closest thing to home that he had, which meant Earth, but definitely at a time and place where things were more simple - technology wise at least. Human beings would always be complicated and unpredictable and really that was one of their best traits in his eyes. Almost as soon as the TARDIS had managed to pull herself free from that parallel world and return to where she belonged, he had set the coordinates to one of those destinations that were on the long list of places to visit, just for fun: Alexandria. Ancient Alexandria, of course, although he had a mind to nip back to the 21st century later to show Rose the difference between the cite then and now. Of course, some might claim the Doctor was running again, dashing to the next shiny location just to avoid having to think about the events in Pete’s world and ask himself how he felt about them, and those people would have been right, as many who knew him (including himself) could attest. As far as the Doctor was concerned, running from his own emotions was a perfectly legitimate way of dealing with the world. He threw open the doors and stepped out into the bright light of the morning sun. Already the temperatures were rising sharply, but he showed as little inkling to dress according to weather as usual; according to weather or location, in fact. Still, it was strange how few people commented on his suit and coat, even in places where both were impractical as well as unheard of, almost as if people sensed that the clothes were the least strange thing about him. „Ancient Alexandria in its most glorious days!“ The Doctor exclaimed, and turned on his heels to take in the scene. In fact, the scene currently did not amount to much. The TARDIS had materialized in what could only be called a tight corner in some back alley where rats had found a perfect and (up until a few seconds ago) mostly undisturbed home. The road was a short distance away, and, the Doctor hoped a bit cleaner than the refuse he was stepping over. The problem of waste removal was as old as human settlement. Rose Tyler

and i won't feel a thing here lies everything, the world i wanted at my feet "What's the rush today?!" She laughed, quickly finishing off her mascara and skipping up to The Doctor as he shrugged into his trench coat.
"Ta da! Is this good enough?" Rose added, throwing out some jazz hands. They were exploring Ancient Alexandria today and she'd been rummaging in The TARDIS closest for the best part of an hour. It was important not to draw too much attention to themselves. "Is that what you're wearing?" She went on, with a grin. "I didn't realise trench coats were in fashion back then."
She could tell after the heaviness of their last adventure; The Doctor was doing his best to bring the fun. Rose didn't say anything, but she hoped he knew she appreciated it. She was still coming to terms with the loss of Mickey, who she'd already taken for granted on some level.
He'd been her rock and constant during some turbulent years and she's only just realised how much that had meant to her. There were so many things she wished she'd said to him, so many thank yous and good times. But that was all gone now, and so was he. Along with her dad, who was still out in that universe, making the world better, like he should've been in this one.
She wondered how The Doctor felt about everything that had gone down in that parallel world. He'd been suspiciously quiet about the whole thing, and Rose wasn't sure she wanted to ask. It would open a can of worms, and The Doctor had never been very good with feelings.
Before she knew it, The Doctor had thrown open the doors and stepped out into glorious sunshine. Rose was suddenly very glad she'd dressed for the occasion. The heat had hit her in the face like an oven. "Wow," she chuckled, taking in their humble surroundings. "You can't beat that view." Her nose scrunched up. "Or the smell."
It was all in jest, of course. Rose didn't mind where they were, as long as she was with The Doctor. It was all part of the fun. Still, it was probably best to get away from the smell of the alleyway. Quickly following The Doctor, they hurried toward the main road. Turning the corner, Rose took in the first real sights of Alexandria. "This place is beautiful!" She gasped.

The Doctor knew he was grinning, possibly stupidly, but he did not care. No matter how often he did it, nothing beat the moment when he stepped out of the TARDIS to discover a new planet, an interesting spot in time anywhere in the galaxy, or the most bustling city in the last century BC. Granted, you had to ignore the fact that part of the people who made the streets so bustling were slaves, but with the sun up and the bright colors and all the activity around, that was easy. Small groups standing around talking, merchants bickering over a sale, children chasing each other around, an errant boy running past on his way to deliver an urgent message, the whole place was just so alive! „The epicenter of the Ptolemaic Empire! They have Alexander’s corpse around here somewhere; Probably in one of the temples. It’s said to be quite a tourist attraction, along with…“ The Doctor turned around more slowly now, this time keeping his gaze up, not at the people but at the sky as far as it was visible above the buildings around. Doing so, he bumped into a boy who was also not watching where he was going as he was trying to catch the attention of passers-by in order so sell him some of the fruit piled high on the cart he was pulling. „Sorry, I didn’t see .. Oh, grapes! Yes. Lovely! We’ll have some. Give me a moment. I am sure I have some…“ He was digging in one coat pocket, then the other, and then the first again, until he finally pulled out a couple of coins, which he handed to the boy, ignoring any protests about him having just bought the equivalent of two carts of grapes. He was far too busy pulling Rosa along. „Now, where shall we head first. Some of the temples? Or down toward the coast? The palace area is huuuuge!“ Rose Tyler

and i won't feel a thing here lies everything, the world i wanted at my feet Rose looked to The Doctor to see him beaming away like he was Father Christmas. This was always Rose's favourite bit. That rush of stepping out into a world she'd never stepped on, breathing in air she'd never breathed, in a time she'd never lived. She'd never get tired of it. Never.
Wherever they were, it was bustling with life and Rose could hear jokes and laughter, mingling with couples bickering and children playing. "Well, us humans do love to show things off, even corpses..." She quipped, imagining they would find themselves visiting that attraction before long. Or encountering Alexander's corpse re-animated by some other species. That was more them. But then they'd been there, done that.
Rose hurried along with The Doctor, dragging her hand along a nearby building. It still made her tingle to think she was touching something from so long ago. She turned around in time to see The Doctor staring at the sky and bumping into a small boy. Rose chuckled as he rummaged around in his many pockets to try and give him some money. Rose smiled kindly down at the boy. "He's nearly there," she told him. Her smile faltered slightly as the little boy skipped off, overjoyed with his earnings.
"Was that boy working?" Rose asked, feeling immensely sorry for the poor kid. Then something even more sinister hit her in the face. "Are these... Are these people slaves?" Rose felt a sudden outrage and injustice for them, and she couldn't hide the pain from her face. "That poor kid..."
She trailed off and fell into her own thoughts, completing missing what The Doctor has just asked. "Hmm?" Rose murmured, her eyes still on the little boy. "Sorry! I mean, yeah. Uh... Temple! Temple sounds good."

The Doctor noted Rose’s discomfort with a fond smile. „A yes, slavery. The one constant throughout human history. These people are a bit more open about it than in your time. Truth be told, it’s a common enough thing throughout the galaxy. People always find a reason to feel superior or entitled enough to justify exploiting someone else.“ He spoke lightly while his eyes scanned the surrounding city for one of the fabled temples of Alexandria. It wasn’t worth for Rose to get upset about this, this was not the time or the place for that. Sometimes societies were ready for a change, and sometimes they were not, and then it was best to go with the flow. Experience had taught him that much. Alexandria was ready for a change. If he got his bearings right, there was presently pretty much constantly a revolution or other going on within its walls, but it was not this one. „There’s still plenty of slavery in your time. These people here are simply more honest about it.“ The Doctor stopped and sniffed the air. The difference of amount of salt in the air was subtle but detectable. Really, this would have been easier id the lighthouse was still standing. with a grin, he led Rose down another street and closer to the harbor. Rose Tyler

and i won't feel a thing here lies everything, the world i wanted at my feet Rose caught The Doctor smiling at her in that "oh-you-humans" kinda way. She raised an eyebrow up at him. She wasn't completely sure if she completely agreed with his mindset; slavery was slavery and it shouldn't exist in any form, at least in her opinion. Still, she trusted The Doctor's judgement (most of the time), and she'd been traveling the universe long enough to know there were some places she just wouldn't understand. This seemed to be one of them. It was important to keep an open mind, however difficult that may be.
"Are they happy?" She asked at last, deciding it might make her feel a little better if she knew they lived well, despite their circumstances. She watched The Doctor curiously as he sniffed the air, laughing a little. What was he up to? She happily allowed herself to be led down another street, and her face brightened as she saw water.
"Are we going on a boat ride?" She asked him excitedly, finding his hand and swinging it cheerily between them. The Doctor hadn't seemed to have had a particular destination in mind, like most of their adventures, but by the way he was walking, Rose thought he had a little idea in mind.

For moment, the Doctor was tempted to launch into a discussion of the various philosophies on happiness found around the galaxy, but in the end decided not to. He was enjoying the moment too much. „I suppose we could do that.“ he grinned. A boat sounded nice, if they could get their hands on one, and find a good time for a leisurely paddle. „The harbor is about the busiest you can find anywhere on earth right now. And..“ The grin became even wider, id such a thing were even possible. „The palace should look even more impressive from the water. And during sunset. Especially during sunset.“ The mentioned sunset was still many hours away, but it could not hurt to plan a bit. „But first we should take a good look at it from the inside. I mean, it’s huuuuge. A city inside the city. And containing… oh look, there we are!“ The street had opened up into a fairly large open space, with several alleys and streets disappearing between elegant houses on three sides, and on the fourth one large wall which somehow managed to be high and intimidating yet at the same time elegant. The gate was not exactly in the middle, but dominating the view wherever you stood. Just as Rose and the Doctor came into view it opened just long enough to admit a group of Roman soldiers before who had come from a large street several houses down. At the sight, the Doctor stopped and bit his lip. „Ooops.“ he murmured under his breathe. Rose Tyler
