A minute before midnight, and Sarah Jane was ready. It was her 60th birthday. The Doctor had learned long ago not to show up before midnight. The Bannerman Street Gang had already shown her a fine birthday, but they were all tucked into their beds now, weren't they? Even Luke, asleep in his bed downstairs with K-9 looking after. Sarah Jane herself was settled down with the Sunday crossword and a fine dress in her Attic, just feet away from where the TARDIS materialized when it chose too.
Grey chiffon, both tight on her form, and loose around her narrow shoulders, her feet up on the tea table in grey silk pumps.
Would he come this night? It was with a sense of joy and relief she felt as she heard the TARDIS coming. As she knew it would, and had feared would not. A burst of air blew her hair back as that big blue box manifest itself with it's expected groans into her Attic. Sarah Jane was quick to get on her feet to go lean ever so casually against her computer.
Sarah Jane waited, legs crossed and her slight weight braced against the sleeping computer behind her.
"Sarah Jane, I'm reading a fluctuation in the space time stream."
"Mr.Smith, go to sleep. I've got it."
Her smile was broad as the TARDIS materialized.

The tapping of nervous fingertips hitting the console echoed through the TARDIS' control room. Intense eyes watched the monitor, making sure that not one minute or second was lost. When not tapping on the console, hands brushed down, checked and double-checked the buttoning on a well-pressed and pristine Crombie coat.
A few beeps and whirrs sounded around the control room.
"Of course I look alright! Why wouldn't I?" The Doctor replied. "And don't sound so surprised by that, eh? I do know how to dress for any occasion, as you are well aware."
Another whoosh circled around the Time Rotor.
"Yes, yes, aside from the Kettarian Royal Wedding! That's their fault, you know. Considering their normal style of dress, they should've specified non-translucent formalwear. Now, shush! Best behavior tonight!"
A bright smile appeared on the Doctor's face as the TARDIS finally made its landing. He glanced at the console. "Right on the mark. Good on ye."
He strode to the door and opened it.
There she was, as radiant as ever, with a smile that could melt the coldest of hearts. So many fond memories flooded back into his mind all at once, and he looked forward to creating another with...
"Sarah Jane Smith. My Sarah Jane!"

She went up the the few wooden stairs as light and swift as she'd ever been. There was her Doctor. Oh, it was a face she did not recognize, but by now that meant next to nothing to her. It was her Doctor, and her TARDIS. And what a handsome old man he was. In the back of her mind, she felt a touch of relief. She was happy with the idea that he may have been cavorting around the Universe for decades without being killed by his favorite pastime of saving the Universe.
The Doctor's hands reached for her, and she reached for his, sliding her grip into his. The joy of it all was written on her face.
"Hello, Doctor." Sarah Jane said in such a tone that belayed any unfamiliarly with his current face, showing it mattered not to her. "I knew you'd come."
Oh, those hands in hers. If there had been even the slightest doubt, the way their hands held each other made reality clear. Above all, she knew those hands. And she knew the way he said her name like none other. Those blue eyes that held a sweet endlessness were like no other.

"I wouldn't miss this occasion for anything in all of time and space," the Doctor replied, still smiling warmly as his eyes held on Sarah Jane's. There was so much wisdom behind them; he'd seen the very same so many years ago when they'd first met. Time was very kind to her, and she still possessed a youthful joy that belied her years.
"I believe we have a birthday to celebrate, so come along!" He kept Sarah Jane's hand in his as they walked into the TARDIS. "She and I have both seen some changes since you visited last."
The TARDIS whooshed and the lights seemed to glow a bit brighter, as if to welcome Sarah Jane back after too much time apart. "Ahh, she missed you too. So...Sarah Jane Smith, birthday girl...all of time and space is yours to celebrate in. Make your choice!" He began working his way around the console, prepping the TARDIS for flight. "There are countless worlds that do nothing but throw parties; there's even a planet whose economy is entirely based around cake, but you need only tell me where you wish to go, and I will take you there."

It was a good thing he led her in by both hands. She was busy looking everywhere. Everywhere. He'd brought the Library right in to the control room. An excellent choice as far as she was concerned. How many times had they raced the corridors from the Library to the Control Room, often ending up a shake and a shiver too late? Well, this was certainly two birds with one stone. Sarah Jane was absolutely charmed by the random chalk boards that were dotted here and there about, covered in endless and precise equations.
She followed him to the control console and pointedly dd not tease him for it's size and elaborate design. Did they just keep getting more impressive? Did this mean that the incredibly dapper fellow before her was the latest incarnation of her dear friend? It seemed just little untoward.
Sarah Jane had the urge to go to the Wardrobe and see what the TARDIS might have set out for her, but honestly it would only be for old time's sake. She felt quite dramatic and lovely in the dress she was wearing.
"Somewhere with a double sun. I miss that. And fine seafood, with a good view of course."
With a last hard squeeze she let the Doctor go to get to his work. All too familiar with this mode of travel, she did take a grip on the rail around the controls.

"A double sun, fine seafood, and a view. I think I have just the place!" The Doctor announced happily as he punched Sarah Jane's preferences into the console and let the TARDIS do its work. He stole a glance or two at Sarah Jane, who was still marveling at the TARDIS. Oh, the places we've gone together, the things we've seen and done, he thought. So many splendid memories.
"Oh, yes. Here we go: Aquilia, a water planet orbiting a dual-star system, one of the finest vacation spots in the universe, and known for the best seafood for all species to enjoy. There are over a million beachside resorts scattered all about the biggest islands. There are even a hundred thousand underwater ones, too! And, we'll be visiting at the best time of the planetary year, when the planet is furthest from the two suns, so the temperature will be comfortable." He looked at Sarah Jane and said, "The best part about all of time and space? Variety. There's something for everyone." Once he had the coordinates set, the time rotor was set. All that needed to be done now was to pull the lever to set them on their way. "Sarah Jane," he beckoned, holding out his hand, then gesturing towards the lever. "The birthday girl gets the honors. Set us on our way."

It was a gear shift of sorts. It always had been even in the many incarnations of the TARDIS that she had seen. It was easily recognizable to her. It only really had two gears though. Stillness and Chaos. Sarah Jane flashed the Doctor a smile with the most even teeth in England and shifted the lever with a hum and a thrill. When the structure above the control column began to spin and whir, she let out a delighted laugh and tossed a wealth of chestnut dark hair away from her face.
Chaos, perhaps, but somehow she doubted it. Not only had she known her old friend would come for her this night, she was also certain enough that he'd keep them out of trouble that she'd worn her best party dress and some rather fancy shoes.
Every once in a while, he got it right, and she dare say that tonight would be one of luxury instead of some sort of conundrum. It was then that she took a moment to really get a look at him.
He was dapper as hell, and she rather thought they seemed of an age though he had certainly gone grey before her. The Doctor had quite a lean grace to him, and a spark in his bright blue eyes that were ageless and endless all at once. Such fierce eyebrows! And for the first time in decades he seemed to be wearing sensible clothes (sans cape).
"It sounds lovely. Thanks for the spin, Doctor." she beamed at him, hanging on in case the ride got rough. She wasn't worried about that though, she'd learn to fly with the TARDIS with the skill some learned to surf.

"Oh, don't thank me yet, Sarah Jane," The Doctor said as he felt the subtle twists, turns and shifts of the TARDIS traveling through the Time Vortex. "There's so much more to come!"
He looked upon his former companion and recalled the many years they spent together; so many, in fact, that he couldn't even count them all. They dared to step into the darkest corners of the universe, the strangest of events, the most frightful of crises. The Doctor wondered if Sarah Jane ever realized just how much he had relied on her strength and counsel. He dreaded to think of where he'd be and what he might have done, had she not been there.
There was so much the Doctor wanted to say, so many questions to ask. So much time had passed, and he wanted to fill in the blanks with memories and stories. He hated the emptiness that came with being apart, no matter who he was separated from.
"It's been a long time since we've seen each other," the Doctor finally pointed out, wanting to break the brief silence. "Tell me, how is Luke? Last I checked in, he was impressing everyone at Oxford."

Who had hurt him, she wondered. Something, or someone. She could see it in his face. Right this moment, however, he was as lost as she in the moment. Bubbles of laughter came from her as the top of the time column began to spin, it's glyphs spelling out something that not even the TARDIS would translate for her. The ride was smoother than she remembered, though there were still rhythmic swells one needed to account for.
The Doctor's eyes were sparkling. He reminded her so much of the Doctor when they first met, all long lines, grey hair, and indomitable personality. He bragged away, to her delight.
"Luke is as much trouble as I ever was. He's . . . .he is my joy. But this . . ." She flashed him a brilliant smile. "This is my dream. Oh, thank you for coming. Just don't let me eat anything with a post office box, eh, Doctor"
It all sounded a bit damp. More than damp. Sarah Jane suspected she'd be surrounded by ocean. Swimming was not her forte, but on the Doctor's arm on a night like tonight, she figured she'd be keeping her panty hose dry.
And if not, what the hell.
She had noticed that he did not have another companion aboard, and she was slightly concerned, but the Doctor seemed to be enjoying the evening as much as her, so she let it slide for the moment.

The Doctor beamed as Sarah Jane spoke of Luke. He often thought of the young man as the luckiest son in the universe for having a foster-mother like her. He knew she loved Luke with her whole heart, and anyone basking in the glow of that kind of love could conquer anything.
At Sarah Jane's comment, he laughed and replied, "Not to worry; none of that this time around."
The familiar wheezing of the TARDIS as it settled in for its landing excited the Doctor, and he quickly grabbed the monitor and pulled it in front of him. He breathed an inaudible sigh of relief as he'd actually reached the intended destination.
"Brilliant! We're here!" The Doctor announced with a single clap of his hands. He reached into a slot underneath the console and picked up two small decorative pins. He attached one to Sarah Jane, and one on himself. "Portable force-field generator for underwater travel; keeps us dry and able to breathe, and has the handy side-effect of being fashionable."
He offered his arm for Sarah Jane to take. "Shall we, Birthday Girl?"

As the Doctor made his way around the console, Sarah Jane walked in slow counterpoint, letting her fingers trail around the edges in admiration of it's construction. It was a smooth ride. Large swells easy to manage even in her fancy shoes. A thrill ran through her when she felt the TARDIS land. That moment of near weightlessness followed by a dip that made her take good hold and a broad smile take her face.
In just that moment, they could be anywhere. Anywhere. She was ready for a bit of pampering right now, and rather hoped they'd landed on Aquilia, but frankly just about anywhere would do. She was ready to just fling open the door and go out, but the Doctor stopped to check, his face lighting up, and his tone more than pleased.
"Well done." She said to him with a pride. Pride she'd learned to show with Luke. It had always been her want to tease the Doctor at such times, but Luke had taught her how rewarding it was to share with him how proud of him she was. Oh, back in the early days, she'd given the Doctor grins and taps and the like, but now she'd learned how to say the words.
Sarah Jane had been flying on faith since the Doctor told her they were going to a water world. She was not particularly good at swimming. Or breathing water. When he came to carefully apply her pin and explain it, a slight shade of worry she'd had melted away.
"There's my gadget man." She said fondly, studying his expressive eyes. How old was he now? For all his sparkle and grace, she would have thought him a young man, but his eyes were indeed very, very old. Well, someday she'd catch up with him, but not today. She took his arm lightly.
"Now is it time to thank you?" She asked, just before the door opened. When it did, she was drawn forward by breathless beauty, stepping out onto tufted grass. They'd emerged out of a stand of something like soaring trees, but they looked more like succulents, leaves thick and bulbous, heavy and translucent green in the suns shine. Oh, those double suns. One was just a touch more orange than Earth's sun, the other palest blue. With those two suns, shading in warm and cool, everything seemed so starkly, sharply, deeply lit. Super real as she looked at it. Sarah Jane held tightly now to the Doctor's arm as she drew in a deep deep breath. Salt. Sand. Cooking meat. Clean fire. She could hear laughter not to far away.
"Oh, Doctor, it's perfect." Sarah Jane said, near breathlessly.

"I wouldn't stand for anything less than that when it comes to your birthday," the Doctor assured Sarah Jane. He took in a deep breath and let it out happily. "I never tire of the sights, scents and sounds of Aquilia." He and Sarah Jane began walking along the sand which sparkled gold to a very pale blue in the glow of the twin suns. The water repeatedly rippled toward shore in a soothing rhythm and, thankfully, it never quite hit their shoes. "I can't imagine why I never brought you here before. With all those times dealing with Daleks or the Cybermen, you'd think I'd have a mind to take you someplace more pleasant in between."
A surprisingly delicate tune of clicks and squeaks sounded from above, and the Doctor looked up to see a six-winged, four-finned Delphiloon gliding slowly across the sky. They were giant but extremely friendly creatures that resembled a peculiar cross between a dolphin and a bird. "Ah, brilliant! I hoped they'd be here today! They change hemispheres twice a year; they're the self-appointed guardians of Aquilia's skies."
Ahead, a beachfront restaurant was bustling with customers. The rich, savory smells were stronger now, and the Doctor found himself feeling quite hungry indeed. "Here we are, then! The Trident; one of the highest rated of the restaurants on this side of Aquilia."
The maitre d's face lit up as the Doctor and Sarah Jane approached. "Ahh, Doctor! You're right on time!"
"Surprisingly," the Doctor muttered softly to Sarah Jane, smirking at the shared in-joke.
"And, is this the lovely Sarah Jane Smith you mentioned?"
"The one and only."
"Oh, splendid! Your table is ready, of course! Right this way!"
The Doctor gave Sarah Jane another smile as they walked behind the maitre d to a table for two that overlooked the beach. It was a perfect spot for what the Doctor hoped would be a special time for both of them.

Sarah Jane slipped out of her shoes and left them in the sand.
She walked along, her arm linked with her friend's, not bothering to watch her feet for the Doctor's gentle guidance gave her the confidence to simply look around and let the beauty of it all sink in.
"Och, don't be silly." she patted his hand. "You might not remember, but I do. We've had more good times than bad." she said low and slow to let it sink in. Poor bloke to have forgotten. It didn't worry her too much, she was used to having a Time Lord as a friend, someone who came to her often in a new body, with a new face and in some ways a new personhood, but to her he was always the Doctor.
When they reached the restaurant and she heard what the Maitre d' had to say, she quickly realized that her friend had pulled some sort of time caper to get them reservations. It wasn't as if he'd known where they were going when the TARDIS had first groaned it's way into her attic. It was quite the compliment. Moreso even than what the Maitre d' had to say about her. Privately, she was quite comfortable about people fawning over her. They always had, even without the Doctor's input. Still, she was flattered he'd taken the time to make a reservation for them after the fact. Usually, she felt she was out of sight out of mind for him, which worked out well for them both.
"Right on Time." She agreed with a low chuckle, and shared a knowing glance with her friend. Sarah Jane let herself be seated, and immediately leaned back hard in her chair to appreciate the setting suns. In her heart, in this moment, she could feel each and every incarnation of the Doctor sitting across from her. Well, at least of the eight she knew. And here was the ninth.
"This is just what I was hoping for." she nearly purred, then she sat up and looked at him. She didn't know it, but in her face was the same earnest young woman from decades ago. "Will we have time to explore after dinner? I'd so like to see more."
Ever so briefly, her teeth bit down on her lower lip, then freed it, hope in her eyes. "Do you have time?"

"My dear Sarah Jane," the Doctor reassured her, smiling widely, "if there is one thing I always have a surplus of, it's time...especially for you."
The Time Lord breathed deeply, taking in the crisp, salty yet sweet tropical air, and felt truly relaxed for the first time in so very long. Though he had just stated he always had plenty of time, it often felt as if he had no time at all for moments like these. He was always running to or from something or someone, preventing universal catastrophes or ruining an enemy's plans for conquest or destruction. As terribly as he missed his dear friends, he rarely could make an opportunity to see any of them, and he deeply regretted how that must have made them feel. The Doctor found some comfort in knowing that, like Sarah Jane, they'd gone on to lead extraordinary lives and accomplish amazing things, but he wondered if they ever knew how desperately he missed every single one of them.
"After dinner, we're going underwater," the Doctor teased Sarah Jane with a sly grin. "Not to worry, though; there's a long reinforced transparent passage that runs from this island to the next one. It's actually part of a vast network of passageways throughout the planet. Just the first of many things we can do while we're here."
The Doctor delighted in seeing Sarah Jane so happy. He always enjoyed how her eyes would sparkle whenever an adventure was on the horizon.
A waiter arrived to take drink and appetizer orders, and after he walked away with their requests, the Doctor leaned forward and said, "So, catch me up, eh? Tell me all about what's new in your life since we last met. Should be quite a lot to tell, if I remember right."

Sarah Jane relaxed back in her chair. Relaxed into their endless friendship. This was the one person she didn't need to keep secrets from, and could truly be herself. Not to mention the absolute extraordinary, unearthly beauty of this place.
And was there a safer place in the Universe than at the Doctor's side? She could feel herself melting into the indulgence of it all.
Orders for tea were made. She had fair faith in the TARDIS translator that she'd wind up with something like shrimp scampi and veg on her plate. Close enough anyway. Appetizers of tiny crusted breads with some sort of plant-based pate were put almost immediately on the table and she groaned as she nibbled at one. Whatever they were drinking seemed much like champagne, but there was a peppery taste instead of sweet that she cherished.
"Humans shouldn't swim until an hour after eating . . ." Sarah Jane cautioned, but was reassured by her friend that they'd be safely tunneled and not kicking about underwater.
The Doctor's question about her escapades was like a cork popping under pressure. There were so few people she could tell outright about what she'd been up too. She was an animated speaker, and an excellent storyteller with her journalistic background. Oh, it was so good to tell the truth to someone who understood. And she wanted him to be proud of her. Who else could she brag to? By the time she'd wrapped up the best of her exploits and raved about her son, they were mopping up the last of what was a very good meal.
She sipped down the end of her drink, and looked at him most seriously. Her words were simple, but held so much.
"And . . .how has my favorite Time Lord been?"
Secretly, she was pleased that they seemed of an age of each other. It had been odd when he'd looked so very young. Still, she wondered what had brought him to who he was now. Wondered why she saw such incredible age behind his eyes.
