The Doctor had been spending one of his many days off from adventures to actually try and work on his TARDIS. The old girl always needed a bit of tender love and care once in a while. She wasn't exactly the newest model after all. So he had to often find himself replacing a thing or two here and there from time to time. It was good too for the both of them. It gave him time to bond again with his TARDIS. No different than how a human would bond with their car by working on it. Though unlike a car, his TARDIS was very much sentient. So there was a certain extra level of care needed to be given to the living machine. Normally he was decent about keeping up with things in this face, however, he realized some of his previous faces may have been a bit more neglectful than others. Not that, that was all his fault. Well technically in a way it was, but it was more like the fact that a particular incarnation might not have been as good at fixing things as others. Some were more mechanical driven than others. He just happened to carry that trait. So naturally he had to make up for the mishaps that the other Doctors left behind on occasion. And sadly that was why everything decided to seem to all go wrong at once. Backed up work tended to do that, especially when it came to technology. You miss a few updates and the whole device decides it wants to spazz out on you and not work properly after that or at all probably for that matter. And of course the TARDIS made her displeasure known by zapping the ever living hell out of The Doctor for it too. "Ow!" he cried out in pain and stuck his fingers in his mouth and then shook his hand out, a slight brooding face on his face. "What was that for?!"The TARDIS made a bit of whirring and bloop sounds. "Because! Because! That's not a good enough excuse! That's a flippant throw away excuse!" he bemoaned, now rubbing his hand with the other one, getting up from where he was at the same time. "You could have stopped both of my hearts over that ya know! And then there would you be hmm! Because...rubbish..."The TARDIS vwhorpped softly at him as he moved to his tools. "You should be..." he pouted. "I can't change what the others have or have not done. You should have taken it up with them while they were still here. At least I'm tryin'."The TARDIS made a sound that almost made it seem like it sighed with some level of frustration and defeat all at once. The Doctor was about to take out a tool to finish up the work he was doing, but before he could do that the console itself above began to do some sort of strange surge and arch's of electricity could be seen coming off the control stations. "Now what?!" he called out exasperatedly as he ran up back to the consoles hub. "I basically said I was sorry what more do you want?!"That was when the cloister bells went off. It was because she was being rebellious. Something was wrong. Really wrong. The Doctor stared at the console, there was nothing he could do. "That's not good..." he swallowed frantically looking about. He couldn't touch it as it arched. The TARDIS began to sound like it was taking off, but at the same time, trying its damnedest to not all at once. The old girl gave a deep metal wrenching groan, before there was a sharp jerk to the side, and The Doctor for one of the few times in his Doctory time lord life, was flung across the platform and almost down over the edge back to where he had been before. His tool sure took a tumble though. Scrambling to get back up, The Doctor grabbed ahold of one of the bars around the platform and held on for dear life. His eyes wide with both fear and amazement. Where in the universe were they going! He didn't know....but that was half the adventure of it all wasn't it? Bring it on, was the thought that crossed The Doctors mind, right before the TARDIS jerked again and he got knocked unconscious from the force of it. Ian Chesterton

Ian was running. He'd got a little too close to a bear's cubs and although the Doctor had sworn they were actually aliens and capable of understanding him, putting his hands up, backing away and saying he was sorry hadn't been of any use. The bear had made a noise that sounded more like a dog's bark, then ran straight towards him. Having decided not to wait and see if they could sort out the misunderstanding, Ian had turned and ran.
At least the bear was chasing him and not any of the others. Although given the way Vicki had squealed over the cuteness of the cubs, Ian hoped she hadn't got any closer to them without the mother around. Or father, who knew with alien bears. He wasn't about to enquire about the gender of a bear while he was being chased by it.
Unfortunately there was only so far Ian could run, and so fast. He was pretty sure this bear wasn't as quick as Earth bears, but Ian was slowing and it was gaining. Fortunately, the blue of the TARDIS stood out and he managed a burst of speed to reach it. For a moment he considered that this wasn't where they left it, before he opened the door and closed it behind him.
As he marvelled that it was unlocked for once, the bear scratched at the door. But it wasn't top of Ian's mind. He was too busy being flabbergasted by the room he'd found himself in. It was huge - far bigger and more colourful than the console room he'd been expecting. He bent over, panting and eyes wide as he took it all in.
And then he saw the unconscious man on the floor.
Ian staggered over to him and dropped to his knees beside him. "Are you alright?" he asked, putting a hand on the man's shoulder to give him a shake.

The Doctor had not expected to himself out of all, to be thrown aside nearly like a rag doll in his own TARDIS. Granted he'd been jostled around before, but since this face, the TARDIS had been a lot more unruly about driving. He hadn't known how long he'd been rendered out, but he had a feeling it was less time than what he'd expected. However, as he woke there was a certain part of himself that was almost not thinking in the right face. Now that might have sounded weird, but it sort of wasn't at the same time. It made sense to him, sort of. Mostly in the sense that he could still access those other faces of his at times when he'd need them. But this time it was as if a voice from afar more activated an older face inside him, stirring just briefly and almost making him forget exactly what he was doing or which when where he was. As if that wasn't confusing at all. So for one brief hot second, his brain had gone back to his first face, thinking maybe he'd fallen just asleep again on Ian, Barbra, and Susan. Susan! Oh he'd not thought actually about her in all reality in a long while. Not because he'd stopped loving her or wanting to think about her, he'd just...been busy. But for that brief moment she and his first companions were the forefront of his mind. How ironic...
Or was it.
Cause again he heard an all to familiar ghost in his ears, and then felt his body be touched and shook a bit. This stirred The Doctor to actually move a little, groan form some stiffness and slight pain, and then blink rapidly to adjust to the lighting. Dark hair dropping almost over one eye and just a bit disheveled to almost cover over his second eye, he tried to gauge what was in front of him. At first the face in front of him was blurry, but then just as it was unfocused, it became quickly in focus against the lighting of the TARDIS. His console and its green hued column leaving a slight glow against them and the room. The column was still. The TARDIS clearly had landed, but where?
Then it hit him...Ian!
There he was right in front of him! But how?! He'd left Barbra and Ian behind a long time ago. Many, many, many faces ago. Which meant...he wasn't supposed to be there. At least as far as he could remember anyway. Him being there was touching too dangerously to his first incarnations timeline. Crossing paths was not always a safe bet. But yet here he was, and here Ian was. This was going to be hard to explain to the man. He knew Ian, how he was. It was going to be difficult. Though there was a small part of The Doctor that hoped maybe, that Ian would be a smart man and get it right away maybe. After all he was a teacher. Teachers could be smart.
"Yeah, thanks..." he stated wearily a bit. He tried to shake off the rest of the fog. He had to assess his TARDIS, Ian or no Ian. If he couldn't get out of there, he was going to have to do something about it. He tried to get up, but clearly the rodeo the TARDIS gave had been a bit more than what he'd bargained for. It was going to take a second or two to regain composure after all. What utter rubbish that was. He mocked his dilemma, "Well...that's a thing..."

Ian took the man at his word that he was alright and assumed that him not looking it was due to where he'd found himself. That was until the man tried to get up.
"Take it easy." Ian put a hand to the other man's back to try and steady him. "No need to get up too quickly."
Given that the TARDIS wasn't locked, he must have come in here, hoping for sanctuary. And finding the place safe, passed out. And now Ian would have to explain this space to him, which was daunting when Ian didn't understand it himself. Oh, he'd accepted that it was bigger on the inside alright, even though he couldn't explain it. But what was making it difficult at the moment was how much it had changed.
How had this happened? Why had it happened? Not that he expected any answers that made sense, even when the Doctor came back here. But it just didn't make sense that the room could change so much in such a short space of time.
"I'd get you a chair, but there isn't one." For a big room there wasn't a great deal in it. And sitting on the stairs wasn't the same as sitting on a chair. Ian couldn't do much for him, but maybe he could help take his mind off how he felt. And catch him should he try and stand too soon and fall. "What happened to you?"
On the plus side, at least the bear had stopped scratching at the door and it was all quiet outside. Hopefully it would stay that way and the bear wouldn't be waiting for him to come out.

"It's quite alright Ian." he said about the lack there of chair, waving his old companion off. He might have been an older soul, but he was physically younger than he'd ever been before. So physically he was fine. "I just need a moment, that's all."
He then gave his TARDIS another good once over visually before looking at Ian again, "Oh you know, the usual. Time...space...the TARDIS misbehaving."
The Doctor put a stronger emphasis on the last part of the sentence about the TARDIS, to which the TARDIS vwhorped back a sound at him that seemed a bit like bemoaning that it wasn't her fault what so ever that they were there. The Doctor was only partially convinced of this. Though there was always the chance it wasn't, even if most of the time most of their side quest adventures were the TARDIS's fault. He audibly "hmphed" off the TARDIS's commentary. He'd get over it later once they were out of whatever situation they'd gotten into. The logical deduction as to why Ian was even there, other than time placement, was that he'd been a companion before anyway and so the TARDIS recognized that and just let him in. He supposed maybe that was the TARDIS's ay of saying she was sorry for the crazy bit of trouble.
"Really I don't know what happened. One minute I'm working on her the next the whole control console goes on the fritz and I'm here." he stated. "Where I shouldn't be. Not to say that I'm not pleased to see you again Ian, but this is dangerous, being here. Especially when I don't exactly know which when this is. But by the look on your face and the tone of your voice, it would seem its at least post meeting back in that junk yard oh so many ages...so many faces ago..."
He puts his arms on his knees, letting his arms drape lankily down the front his legs a bit, "So tell me Ian, when am I? What's happened?"
He wanted to know where in Ian's timeline he was.

Ian's mouth hung open at the mention of the TARDIS. That someone else could know what the Ship was was impossible. If he'd been thinking clearly he might considered the time travel aspect, but he wasn't. In his defence, he had just been chased by a bear. "Er..." he managed, eloquently. There were exactly three people on this planet who knew his name and all of them were some way away. Safely, he hoped. He managed to recover his faculties enough to repeat, "What's happened? What's happened is I was being chased by a bear, ran into a police box that's now even bigger on the inside, with someone who knows me, but I've never met before."
He ran a hand through his hair. He'd embraced all manner of strange, inexplicable - probably impossible - things, including being shrunk. But now he was faced with something he thought he'd got to grips with, if not understood, and he was confused. And frustrated.
"Who are you?"

The Doctor sighed a bit. Yep here it was, the disbelief. Ian did really have a hard time grasping things a bit. But really The Doctor, especially now, couldn't hold him accountable for that to be honest. This was all new compared to where he left Ian. Which the man still did not explain very much of where in the teachers timeline he was. A bear, he didn't really remember anything about any bear at the moment from that point in his life, but then much of his early memories were a bit vague these days. Even a time lord had a limit on memory capacity. It's why he wrote journals, so he didn't have to store it all up in that noggin of his. He finally did get up to not only get his bearings but to be on a more confident level with Ian. Now that he wasn't as out of it he was able to make it to his feet without so much as a stumble.
"Okay, Ian..." he said and put a gentle hand on the teachers shoulder. "I know that this is hard to believe, but I swear on both my hearts it's true. I...am The Doctor. Just..not your Doctor. If that makes any sense what so ever."
The Doctor ran a hand through his long bangs, pushing them more to the side.
"Ooooh...I wish this was easier to explain." he stated moving towards the control console to give the readings on the panels a gander, seeing if the ship was functional at all. And it was, but not enough at the moment to get out of there. He didn't dare touch the controls for fear she might arch again and instead turned back to Ian. "Um...you see, I...ah...changed. Quite literally."
He tried to grasp for a human concept Ian could understand, then snapped his fingers and then pointed at Ian, "A Phoenix! Those birds of mythology. I changed, kinda like that. I came to the end of that life and then boom!"
He gestured outwards around himself as if to show the outward explosiveness of how his regeneration process works.
"Golden light sort of like fire coming out of my body. Sometimes more explosive than others depending on the face, but yes. Each time I change my face." he stated and then pointed towards the console. "When I change, the TARDIS also goes through a change."
He moves around the console, "All of this, it's the same TARDIS...just a different face, a different desktop. It's just had a long time to get here to this point."
He licked his lips lightly, eyes pleading, hoping that Ian would be the smart man he knew the teacher could be and start to register what The Doctor was explaining.
"Please Ian, you have to believe me." he begged. "I shouldn't be here, but here I am and I can't get away. Not while she's down. So, I have to make due with the situation. Normally, this wouldn't ever happen, but somehow someone, something, some reason brought the TARDIS here and I don't know why. She wouldn't come here of her own volition knowing what it could do to the timelines."

Ian wasn't any less confused or frustrated. Of all the explanations, the Doctor as a Phoenix was not something believable at all. There was a reason it was a myth. Granted, the other man did speak a little like the Doctor, in that his explanations made no sense at all. But the way he talked about the TARDIS and interacted with it wasn't the same at all.
All through the other man's explanation, he'd looked unconvinced. When he finally stopped talking Ian folded his arms and shook his head. "That's not possible. You can't be the Doctor."
Although there was a part of him that was aware a police box couldn't be bigger on the inside. So he added, with a lift of his chin, "If you are the Doctor, prove it."
