"Of course I am." he tried so hard to lie. "Why wouldn't I be?"
He did a little gesture at himself, "I mean look at me. I'm all sorts of sexy these days."
Giving a mischievous smirk towards her after coming inside, "I'm mean what do you think? Too much? Too little? Just right?"
He didn't want to bring weighted feelings into his old friends house, that wouldn't be right of him. However, feelings there were. Deep down inside like a big ball of yarn just waiting to strangle the daylights out of him from the inside out. He knew she'd been okay when she'd got older, but for her this was her first time seeing him since many many faces ago. Her personal best friend was gone, replaced by, changed faced imposter. However, he knew it was still himself, just different a bit. It wasn't like Sarah Jane didn't get it, because he knew she was smart and knew who he was, what he was. It still was different though. Could she accept him as he was?
He had a bad feeling Sarah Jane was going to like she always could, see right through him. She and him had very much been great friends when he was super tall, their bond had grown so much over the time she'd traveled with him. So naturally she was going to see right through his stupid facade. To be honest he couldn't blame her if she did. Feeling some of the pressure building inside himself he gave a more casual, but lightly serious and concerned stare.
He said in a very honest tone, "Oh how I missed you Sarah Jane."

He always did make her laugh, and she did as he showed off. Actually she half ignored him, knowing he was playing the fool. Sarah Jane took the time to check out the door, this way and that, to make certain he hadn't parked the TARDIS somewhere easily seen from the road. It was not a busy street, but she didn't want to have to bother to explain to the families who's land butted hers. No TARDIS. Well, at least he'd parked well. The back yard was much more protected by high hedges. She turned back to him, shutting the door behind her.
"The chin is a bit much, but it suits you when you smile." Out of the joy and pain she'd been feeling, joy was winning out. Not to say she couldn't see his pain, but she was hurting too, and it would be less painful to work it out over the course of time and not in seconds. This would not be the first time the pair of them set aside pain to continue instead with action and enthusiasm. A joke went a long way in the face of true adversity. She was thinking of that as she looked into his eyes, asking him to hold on because they could get through this.
"Oh how I missed you Sarah Jane." he responded his bravado dropped and his honesty clear. "Good to know." She replied with a wry grin. "Where did you park that blue box of yours?"
Two steps down was what was once 'The Reception room'. Now Sarah Jane though of it as her office. And it showed. Everywhere were maps over maps and files over files. Over on the side of the room in front of a large, dark china cabinet was a map of London with thumbtacks connected by red yarn.

"I'll keep that in mind." he said with a short scoffing chuckle. He gave a leaning glance into the room where all the paper mess was before slightly walking towards its a little to get a better look before he turned to look at her, "Well, it seems you've been busy. What have you been getting yourself into?"
It was as much a question as it was a statement. He knew, he knew what sorts of things she'd get up too. But he wanted to hear it as if it were a brand new thing. it made him feel better to do it that way. At least she was doing well. That sort of made him feel better to know what sort of life she'd been living. Though he wondered and wanted to know completely, how long it had been. However, he could ask that later. Now was more time for being in the moment. Like finding out what she'd been up to, and oh by the universe whatever that smell was that was wavering about. Something smelled tasty.
"Oh the ol' girl?" he stated thumbing back towards the door. "Well um, she's...she uh..."
He hung his head a bit embarrassed, "She's not here."
He then looked up and put his hands out, "Now don't worry, I'm sure she'll be back for me. She's done this a few times...gotten more sassy since...well since we traveled...but yeah. She kinda just left me here, even dematerialized on me without me going through the door. Embarrassing I know."
His face flushed a little as he rubbed the back of his neck a little, that shy smile coming back again, "Guess she thought it would be funny to be naughty."
He gave an awkward clearing of his throat after a few seconds of silence.
"Sooo...do I get a hug or no?" he asked. He was the huggy one. And boy did he really want to give her a great big warm friendly hug that said "this is how much I missed you" all over it. He held his hands out in a "well?" sort of fashion, tiling his head to the side, that warm look still all over his face. It was so damn goofy really that's what it was, and it was that sort of face that made it really hard for anyone to stay mad at him for any one length or period of time.

Sarah Jane rather casually waved away the detritus of information she'd gathered on the current anomaly she'd been investigating. In that instant she wished a bit that she was somewhat tidier about it, but she really did need to lay it out in a sort of mosaic that tracked her deductions of the apparent interplay. However, it would be easy to describe as 'messy' to someone who couldn't see what she was doing.
"Oh, same ol' same ol'. A bit of this, some of that, and plenty of mud." 'same old same old' as in all sorts of adventure, but all alone. A somewhat painful subject, and she didn't want to get into it.
That was when the Doctor said what he was 'getting into' or more precisely 'out of' out of the TARDIS. Involuntarily. Sarah Jane was aware that this was serious. There was something wrong, even if the Doctor was trying to obfuscate it. Poor dear with a lost look on his face that his TARDIS had seemingly abandoned him. It was both sad, and serious, but there was no denying it was also a bit hilarious. Sarah Jane put her fingers over her lips in an effort to keep a straight face, or at least hide any of her amusement that came through.
The more he tried to explain, and the more embarrassed her friend got, the funnier it all was. By the end of his explanation, she'd given up trying to hide anything by hand or by self control, and she was laughing right at him. Not obnoxiously loud, but it was surely more than a chuckle. She didn't stop until he asked for a hug. Sarah Jane was a bit stunned, but smiling still, arms wide as she closed the distance between them. Her arms were aimed high she reached above his shoulders and drew him in tight. Her eyes were squeezed closed as she held on hard to him.
A hug. With the Doctor. Very unexpected, and it felt lovely. Here was her dear friend, found and whole, solid in her arms. It was that moment she was certain she wasn't dreaming.
"I missed you so much."

There it was, the great big hug he wanted so badly. In a way, Sarah Jane wrapping her arms around him like she did, just suddenly started making all those bad feelings dull and slip away like a waterfall over ones head, gentle yet somewhat warm. Like one of those far off hot spring planets he'd visited once. Those were nice. it drew the scents of flowers, salty breezes, tropical fruit, and other exotic smells that he wanted to remember so bad to the surface. Now he could put that good thought of past into relation with Sarah Jane. Which to a normal person would seem weird, but for him, somehow it made things just more rememberable and memorable all at once. Time Lord thinking, it was complicated. Yet somehow strangely confusingly simple all at once.
He leaned his head down against hers, taking in the embrace and not wanting to let it go for a second. It had felt like forever. A forever, he never wanted to feel again. Yet he knew, he knew it would be a forever for her. At least as far as he knew from the last visit he had with her that he personally could remember at the moment. Another thing about the Time Lord mind, some things were often forgotten on accident. Like Sarah Jane. It just made him rub at her shoulders in the warm embrace, mostly trying to ground himself, but also to suggest to her his affections that he did miss her so dearly.
And then, almost suddenly, as if he couldn't quite hold it back anymore. His body decided to do something shocking without him even asking for it to do so. Tears, soft, silent tears began to run down the Time Lords face. This was something that had been very new since his time during the Time War. His last two faces had a hard time doing this. But this face, this face it came so much more easily. The tears were somewhere between elation and sadness. Fear and hope.
"I really am sorry I left you." he said, his voice cracked a bit. He took the hand that had rubbed her back and had ran it through her hair a few times before kissing her on the forehead and pulling her back in to the firm but gentle hug he clung to. "But I'm here now..."
Even if I shouldn't be, he mused in his head then said, "She was right...silly ol' girl, heh."

He clung to her hard, and their heads pressed together. She'd never really felt the Doctor hug her back. It had never mattered to her, but this did. Right now. She felt a certain rising glee at the feel of his arms wrapped around her as hard as she was holding him. He was leaning on her a little, and she didn't go up on her toes, staying a firm bace instead. Sarah Jane didn't want to let go, and neither did the Doctor it seemed.
It was really starting to soak in that he was really here. That he'd found his way back to her. That he wouldn't disappear as he had in so many a dream.
That was when she heard the slightest hitch in his breathing. Felt a hot tear against her ear. It felt good that he felt like she did, she thought, tears pricking her own eyes as she held on even harder. In those moments held tight by him forgiving him for all the times he had not come that she thought he should have. Forgiving him for every time she'd cursed him.
What he did apologize for though surprised her. She looked up at his green hazel eyes as he pulled back, finding herself twice a surprised by the kiss her pressed to her forehead, and twice as comforted. With him here, safe in her house, it was getting easier and easier to brush her own hurts aside. Clearly, he'd been through something far more detrimental. She could see it in his eyes.
As the Doctor folded her back into his arms, she shifted so her arms could go around his waist, and her head to his shoulder. She held on tight. He felt lean under her hands.
"Don't be pedantic. I had to go, we both knew that."
She had needed to go as much as he had needed her gone for the trip to Gallifrey. The warmth of that small kiss still lingered on her forehead and was somehow warming through the few icicles she'd held in her heart for him and for what had happened.
"I'm not silly." She followed up, a bit confused but not letting go yet.

He gave a deep weighted, chest aching weighted sigh, "...I know...but I also know I could have tried harder to remember, tried harder to come back sooner. I guess...I guess I just lost track of time. Irony that...me losing track of time. Seems so common these days."
He then gave a short chuckle, "Ah no, my TARDIS. She's silly. A silly ol' sexy girl who loves to pull pranks on her thief. Heh."
He smiled a bit as he still snuggled her in that hug, but there were still tears clinging to his face. A part of him was still shedding them a bit, but the initial release of feelings and tension was now gone. He supposed they both really needed that to be honest. He didn't want to move from the hug at all, but he knew eventually Sarah Jane was going to have to get on with her day at least a bit. Eventually coming around to wanting to try and let go, he brought his hands to either side of her face and just smiled down at her. He wiped away the tears that threatened Sarah Janes own cheeks. He knew he'd wounded her deeply by saying he'd keep a promise and then never did. Gallifrey...oh Gallifrey. She didn't know what had become of his time after that one trip back and then the rest of his future dealing with the Time Lords, then the Time War, and the one who shouldn't be named. The man he'd had, had to become to fight for Galifrey...for the universe, the things he had to do, to end the war.
She probably wouldn't have much like that part him at all. And it made him feel ashamed inside just a bit. He still felt guilty for that time in his life. it had been hard and not something he really liked looking back on. He didn't know if that would ever change, or be lost. He would try not to bring any of that up at all. She didn't need to know the darker stuff he'd been through. At least not in detail to what had transpired after he left then forth. He could talk about the better bits, the funner travels with companions he'd met. Maybe, though he wondered if it would wound her further if he tried. He supposed he'd have to gauge that as things progressed.
"Oh, my Sarah Jane. Don't you ever change. I love you just the way you are." he stated again brushed away that soft hair from her face, then raised a brow in curiosity. "I couldn't help but notice that something smelled tantalizing, did I catch you in the middle of a meal?"

His answer about the TARDIS made something like a small laugh, and something like a small cry come out of her, and she chuckled tearfully against his ear, still holding on tight. With that, they were settling in to that hug. With each breath that she had her arms around her, she could feel pains of the past few years melting away. What did any of that matter now. Sarah Jane squeezed him even harder, but then began to let go. The Doctor had never been very good at letting go.
As she did, he came loose of her, but still with tender hands caught her face. He wiped her threatening tears in such a human way, she suddenly realized he'd been gone from her quite a long time. Longer for him than for her. Well, she liked how it was working out.
As soon as their little explosion of emotion was over, the Doctor's stomach kicked in.
"Well, I see you haven't changed. Come on you." How easily she found his hand. How familiar it was. It seemed nothing but normal to lead him to the little breakfast nook. "Come on, sit down, I've tea for two." She poured a cup of tea, all the fixings ready, and went to scoop herself another cup to join him with. She presented him with the veggimite toast. "Here you go."
Sarah Jane popped in another piece of bread.
"So, you've started calling her 'Sexy' out loud? I was wondering how long that would take . . .with your 'special relationship' and all." Her words being clearly in quotes here and there, and her face was full of amusement as she sat down to poor her own cup from the pot.

He had followed her so willingly into her little area where she ate. So he had been interrupting her during a meal. Well there was a good and bad thing about that. Good because food always could make for great conversation starting. Bad because it could be seen as rude to interrupt. However, it seemed she was more than pleased to have him there and willing to share in her mealtime. In a way it made him feel more at hime there, more like things never changed even though they had because of time and space. But he had sat himself down anyway to enjoy whatever it was she'd give him.
Veggimite on toast. Hmmm, he couldn't remember if he was into that sort of thing or not. He remembered what veggimite was, but his was a whole new face, new tastes. He didn't want to be seen as rude though. So he took the toast and studied it for a second before lifting it to his face and taking a bite of it. The flavor was about the same as he remembered, but for some reason, much like a bitter wine, it didn't quite settle well on his pallet. So naturally he kind of made a face that resembled that of a child trying something new for the first time and not quite finding it to their liking. He now could stomach things, unlike when he first regenerated, but there was still a certain level of pallet he still could not handle in this face. It seemed extremely salty things were not in that wheelhouse, at least not that salty anyway. Salt in things to accentuate was okay, but things that seemed to excel in salt was not. Probably why he had such a picky taste with pickles too. They had to be just that right source of bitter to sweet ratio in order for him to like it. Maybe that was it, he was more into sweet tastes.
He put the toast down as he chewed, then swallowed the best he could, and then spoke, "Yes, I have started calling her that. I'm more bold than I used to be I suppose. Plus, I really think she likes it anyway. And you know, i think things have become stronger between her and I because of our travels."
He then took a drink of tea to try and wash the veggimite down a bit. it was beautiful of her to feed him, but there was a part of him that seemed to be drawing maybe into a marmalade, jam, or honey direction as far as toasts went. Or maybe even custard, never could go wrong with custard. The tea was fine at least. It wasn't musk tea so bonus points there. If it had been, he'd have probably had to cringe there too. He really didn't want to be rude though and ask her to change the toast, so he'd suffer through the one piece at least and if given the opportunity, would get something sweeter to stick on another.
"You really do seem to be doing alright for yourself." he stated. "Despite everything. Kind of figured you would. You were never a weak natured person as far as I could recall. Always looking ahead. One of the few i could count on to be okay. Which says a lot about you."

Her temper flared as he clearly did not like the veggimite. He looked like a two year old. Boldly, she sat on the edge of the table long enough to snatch the rest of the toast out of the Doctor's mouth before he could become even more dramatic in his dislike.
Well, at least there was no confusion about who this was. It was the Doctor alright. She pushed the tea closer to him and started spooning in sugar after sugar. Five, if she remembered. She looked at him most seriously.
"Well, you've been doing terribly. Look at you. You died without me taking care of you. And you've been through Stars knows what by that look in your eyes. Here you are, showing up without some sort of companionship, and no TARDIS in sight." Her voice was clipped and full of care for him that she tried to hide.
She pushed the super sweet, super hot tea at him as she perched on the edge of the table.
Doing well for herself indeed. Of course she was. Sarah Jane was not charmed in the least.

Oh boy, was she sassy as ever. It made him wonder if he should get her a mug just for that very reason. One that said 'I'm sassy, I'm classy, and just a bit smart assy.' on it. He believed she'd just adore it. Only because she'd know it was so true. Plus, it was black and pink. Something she'd might like just a little, maybe. Not too feminine, but not too not either. Either way her tart nature got his attention. That was the woman he knew hw should be careful not to push too far. The woman that could sass him and get away with it too. Universe above he let her get away with a lot didn't he. Donna was the only second person in his life that was able to sass him so badly. Heavens forbid the two got together, he'd be so out numbered in sass levels that he wouldn't know what to do. Then forbid his wife was added on top of that, then that would be three people. Then again...Amy...no! No! Was not going to think about that! Nope nope nope! He moved that train as quickly as it came back into reverse.
he was not going to bring that load of baggage down on Sarah Jane. Not even. Yet, he did look a right mess didn't he? Like a washed up scoundrel on a deserted shoreline. It was a bit pitiful, even by his own standards. He was certain not even himself could put up with himself right now. Which was saying something. But as per usual he had to try and make it seem less than it was, try and make light of the fact, but knowing Sarah Jane, she'd see right through his bs and nail him for it.
"Oi! I was eating that!" he stated. "As terrible as it tasted..."
He did gave another bleh look about it, "Salty things, this pallet doesn't seem to take well to them much apparently. So if there's anyone or anything you want to blame on that blame my taste buds for being picky."
He gave a sort of brooding face. One that almost anyone he'd met couldn't quite escape its absolute charm it had.
"If you got anything with raspberry....I'd go for that. Jammie Dodgers got me addicted to it." he fussed then sort of looked off in thought for a second.
"I've been......fine. I've been fine." he tried to lie. He was good at lying...most of the time. But with Sarah Jane...ehhh. Not quite so much maybe. But he had to try.
"Things have just been...busy. Yes busy! That's the word." he continued trying to fiend the truth. It wasn't the truth at all. The Doctor wasn't busy. He didn't want to tell her just how bad or how long it really'd been. He didn't want to break her heart that he'd never really came back for her and never would. Even if he wanted to so badly so he could reconcile his guilt. That there had been a very bad war he'd gone off to incarnations later. Of course losing so many companions, and his latest...there were those tears about ready to threaten again from his face, as they had just moments ago. So he took the tea and hid his face in it, hair drooping down into his eyes to try and hide the pain of it all. Luckily the tea seemed fine enough, it's sweet texture going down like a form of medicine to sooth his nerves.

"Veggimite doesn't taste like it smells. You don't like it. Have your tea."
She came back with blackberries, using the time that she had her back turned to think hard without having to hide her expression. Something had shaken him badly. He was the Doctor, but it was like he was out of focus. Like he was trying very hard to be regular.
But maybe he'd forgotten who he used to be. Sarah Jane felt her stomach sink with worry and a longing for the past. Still, he was here. Anything else, they could deal with. She swallowed down her feelings before she turned back to him and joined him at the table, pulling up a chair and putting down the basket of rather perfect berries.
The way he was dodging her gaze reminded her of a wild animal caught in the corner and trying to disappear by being very still and refusing to look at whomever had cornered it. Poor Doctor. Sarah leaned back in her chair to give him just a bit more space. Her heart was pounding a bit with worry, but he didn't need to know that. All she had to do was keep breathing.
"Yeah. Busy is the word."
Sarah Jane sipped at her own tea, then leaned back a little more, putting her foot up on the table rail underneath.
"So-" She broke the moment's silence. "You hug people now?"

He gave a nod about the veggimite. Oh well, he supposed. Alas, it wasn't toast and jam or jelly or even a marmalade, but it was still something sweet. He'd live with that. He drew the blackberries to himself and plopped one into his mouth approvingly before taking another sip of tea. The tea was working to calm his nerves, and the sweet berries put just ever so slightly a bit of spring back into his more pep self. It wasn't perfect, but he felt he probably wasn't going to panic now for just being there for, well, time path crossing reasons.
"Yeah," he said. "Started getting more that way after well, that face."
He was meaning his fourth incarnations.
"After..." he shook his head he was not going to talk about the time war. " Well after a long hard road anyway...I met Rose and well...she was a bit of a huggy person..."
He bit at his lower lip a bit. And there was another thought to bring up, of course. But he pushed the pain part down quickly of that. He remembered the two of them meeting, Rose and Sarah Jane. It was all out of joint time wise for them. He had already had it happen and well Sarah had not. But hopefully after this fiasco, she still would. Because it had been a beautiful moment for her and Rose to share. That both generations could live in harmony.
"Um...so yeah it just sorta stayed...I guess." he said shifting a bit. He liked hugs what could he say. They were warm squishy things that made a persons heart (or in his case hearts) soar. Plus hugs were a form of medicine, whether one liked them or not.
"Also the tea is lovely." he added with a light smile. There was another moment of silence. To try and keep things pleasant, he tried putting focus on her instead of himself. "So, I really how are you doing. I know I've missed a lot. What to tell me more about this and that you've been up to in more detail?"

He looked so sad. Not sulking or throwing a mood. The Doctor looked about as sad as she'd ever seen him. Sarah Jane was glad to see him, but was sorry about whatever had brought him to this state.
Well, at least he wasn't spitting the berries out onto his tea saucer.
"Sluggy slimed limpits the size of dinner plates. Found a batch of them in a tunnel. They seem harmless, but I have reason to believe that they're just a first try toward something more diabolical. I'm tracing their origin." She rattled off, waving a negligent hand at the mess of sorted intelligence she'd left all over the place. Then she leaned in wanting to catch his full attention, and not giving him time to react to her current investigation. She tapped a fingernail on the table between them.
"Doctor. Where is Rose?"
She was worried his friend had left the Doctor in the lurch somewhere. Whomever Rose was. Sarah Jane did her best not to acknowledge the wave of jealousy she felt down in her gut. Why hadn't the Doctor just come immediately and picked her up when he'd gotten loose of Gallifrey? Wasn't she his best friend?. . . how long had he been dead anyway? Or should she wonder how long he'd been alive? How long had it taken her friend to learn to hug?

The Doctor raised a brow to what she said about the limpits. Size of dinner plates? Now that sounded amusing. Though at the same time it sounded like the least exciting thing that poor Sarah Jane could have ever encountered. To be honest he was now kind of hoping there was more to this than some creature the size of a dinner plate involved. Otherwise that sounded about like the most sad trail she'd ever followed. Yet knowing her, it wasn't going to stay that way for very long. No things would get more interesting and better. Either now or later. Even if maybe he might just have to help prod the process along a bit. After all, Sarah Jane never told him how she really got off the ground with solving things like she did when he saw her last.
"Oh yeah...that sounds...dangerous." he tried to state with a straight face, but then couldn't help but give a small chuckle. He couldn't help it. It really did sound like a tiny bit cheesy, even if there was some chance there was something dangerous potentially behind it all. If there was, maybe he could help. He was still stuck there after all. And who in the universe knew when his TARDIS would come back and pick him up.
He then looked down before he looked back at Sarah Jane and took a long deep sip of his tea before answering, "Oh, um, she's fine. In no danger. She just moved on. She's home with her parents now. Last I heard she was going to have a younger brother. And I gave her a chance for a life with a meta crisis of myself. Long story. But anyway...good on them. They deserve it...she deserves it."
His gaze was wistful in thought, almost staring off with a thousand yard stare for a moment. He missed Rose, but he knew things had been for the better. He knew she was with a version of himself. all he could was hope she'd take advantage of the fact. Especially the fact that version was human unlike himself who left. Who couldn't stay in that alternate reality. He wasn't sure if it was a good idea to spill the beans on the fact that Rose had vanished because of a different universe though or not. That might have been too much. Sarah Jane could press in asking if she wanted to. But he'd probably only answer if she did ask.
"In any case, anything I can do while I'm here?" he asked. This face had a terrible time sitting still for too long, and there was a part of him who wanted a bit to just go get themselves into a hit of mischief just like the good old days.
