And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ A frown crossed Tobias' face before he shrugged. "I don't remember it all that clearly," he said flippantly. After all, everything had happened in a blur. He was fairly sure he had been too angry to even register fear immediately. By the time that had melted away...well, he supposed it would be difficult to explain to Ms. Smith that in the timeline he lived in terrible things were often expected to happen and being thrown through time wasn't that bad. It was why he had been living so nonchalantly thus far. As far as he was concerned, this was a better time. Sure, people might be ahead in certain ways in the future, but his time was largely shaped by the fact it had been forced to rebuild centuries ago due to an attack by the Daleks. That made for a society that was not as peaceful and far more focused on fighting aliens.
A confused expression crossed his face at the sudden insistence within her tone. "Yes?" He took just a moment to pull out the broken vortex manipulator from one of his pockets before holding it out as best he could. "This is it." He didn't really see why she needed it though. He hadn't been able to get it to work since he'd gotten here.

"Well, I can't imagine it's much better when it's fuzzy." She said grimly. Sarah Jane was nearly certain they were not being followed. Well, not being followed in a vehicle anyway. That didn't matter much considering what she now held in her hand. A Vortex Manipulator. She put it on the seat beside her and got back to driving and desperately planning. "!@#$" she mumbled under her breath, and had to grit her teeth to not drive faster with the wave of adrenaline she was feeling. Everything seemed so slow all of a sudden, but if she drove any more crazy than she already was, there could be trouble, police scanner or no. The bad news was that a Vortex Manipulator in the right hands could track life signs, beyond it's pesky ability to travel through time and space. Specific signs. Tobias' signs were damned well specific. She wished she had some idea of it's range. The good news was that she was now equally armed with whomever had it in for the boy. "Any idea's on why laser lady from the future want's to turn you into a toaster? What's going on?" She was heading for the next exit. For real this time. Sarah Jane was not the sort to forget that her sudden companion had damage of some kind due to her fairly haphazard rescue. She wanted a good look at him before she decided if they'd be better with the car or without it. Tobias Hardwick

❧ Tobias didn't respond, not bothering to point out the obvious. Instead, he merely waited for his vision to come back and an answer in regards to the bracelet to be offered. While Sarah Jane seemed to take the latter, it seemed as though the former would be coming first as he saw flickers of his sight coming back slowly but surely. Unfortunately, there didn't seem to be anything resembling an answer in regards to the bracelet except a muttered swear.
His brow furrowed and he briefly considered why anyone from the future might want him. After all, he had presumed that was not the case since they had sent him back in time with seemingly no way to get back. "No," he said after a moment, "I don't actually know anything about the people who did the surgery on me. Well, except that what they did was probably illegal." Even if they had saved his life, he was fairly sure that this amount of metal in a person would not have been very...kosher to the public.

The kid knew more than he knew he knew. Typical, really. That was why investigative reporters were so important. Any answer was a telling answer. What Tobias was telling her was quickly swaying her opinion of him. At first, she'd only given him the card just in case he would be useful in tracking his own activities. After she'd seen that picnic basket full of comic books and science fiction, she'd gotten so far as to not see him as a threat. Now, though with all the things he was telling her, she was starting to feel and anger for him. This was some escapee from the future, running from people who had done shocking things to him. Sarah Jane didn't see how she could allow such things to happen again. 'Probably Illegal'? How about entirely unconscionable? Poor metal mite. "Believe me. Nothing like that is going to happen again." Something was clearly going in the wrong direction in the future. In all her years though, she'd learned that sometimes being in the past gave you power over that future. Being able to nip in the bud some plan that was in it's infancy before time gave it power. The Trickster had taught her that. "Hang on." Sarah Jane went down between the two lanes, one hard right to exit, one on ahead. At the very last moment, she took the right, tires squealing just a bit. Her arm pressed against her door, but the turn was neatly made. Still no followers. "This will do." The first petrol station was half lit, one of the tall light towers buzzing and flickering. Sarah Jane all but popped out of her door with all her anger at herself for her knocking an innocent about, then yanking the passenger door open to see what was going on in her back seat. ❧ Tobias frowned at Sarah Jane's words, finding it a bit difficult to believe. After all, he didn't know much about why he had ended up as he had. All that was definite in his mind was that his parents had more than likely died in the accident and if he wanted to get back to his own timeline he was probably going to have to do it himself, something that was probably not going to happen. His lack of desire aside, the cyborg had never been the smartest of humans to begin with so fixing the vortex manipulator was something that had always been unlikely to happen.
Not thinking too much about where he grabbed, Tobias grasped onto the seat. It didn't feel nearly as bumpy as before but was hardly the smoothest ride in the world. As such, he was more than relieved when they finally came to a stop and was silently glad he had a bit too much metal in him to be properly sick. Silently, he leaned against the seat, only turning his gaze to the side at the sound of a door opening.

"Come on." The easiest way to identify laser strike was by smell. As she bent in to help right Tobias, she wasn't catching that unpleasant burning scent. Sarah Jane was by no means shy as she reached in, hooked and arm and a leg in her hands and got her passenger fully upright. With a bit of maneuvering, she got him sitting on the edge of the seat with his feet out the door. Sarah Jane had gotten down on one knee to get a good look at him, a torch suddenly blazing up in her hands. She always had one handy. Always. Flashing the light up and down the cyborg, she looked for obvious damage before going back to the kid's eyes. She was tempted to put the bright point of light right into his gaze to look for damage, but part of her could not forget that part of him seemed very, very human. She aimed at his cheek, but looked hard at Tobias' eyes. "Do you think you'll be okay? Are you in pain anywhere?" lightly she took his delicately hewn jaw into her hand to try to get a steady look. She wasn't sure what she was looking for, but it couldn't hurt to try. It seemed like more had gone wrong than just his sight, but it was a good place to start. Tobias Hardwick

❧ A surprised sound escaped Tobias as Sarah Jane moved to help him so that he was sitting on the edge of the seat, legs hanging out the door. Eyes squinting, he tried to get a look at human but his vision was a bit blurry still and slow to focus still. All he could really make out was that she was close but what she was doing he couldn't even begin to guess. Something with some sort of...light?
He blinked, hesitating for a long moment before he finally answered. "I can't feel pain," he said, hardly realizing that this in itself was key information. He had no idea what goal those who had constructed him had held when they had put him together and, not being the brightest of humans, he had never put together that the goal had been. However, like any product, one's desire could easily be seen in the parts and it was not entirely hard to see that the scientists who had worked on Tobias had aimed for something very human but also beyond it.
"I should be fine. I didn't actually get hit after all. Natural glitches always go away. I'm already starting to get my vision back." A small frown crossed his face as Sarah Jane seemed to be looking for something. "What are you doing?" He wasn't entirely sure he liked being inspected like a thing after all, so it would have been nice to know what she was doing at least.

"I'm just getting a good look to see if you're hurt." she said most seriously, letting him go. His eyes didn't seem to be tracking, but she couldn't see any damage. Sarah Jane was feeling a sense of relief to find him in fair shape. She hadn't broken him, not much anyway. She stood and looked around to see if anyone was driving near, mulling over her options at this point, then frowned back at Tobias. Poetic, pouty, fragile, delicately handsome, and in a hell of a lot of trouble she didn't think he was ready for. "Do you mean you can't feel pain? Or you're not feeling pain now?" Tobias Hardwick

❧ He offered a small sound of understanding at her response, choosing to let Sarah Jane do as she pleased. She didn't appear to be doing anything harmful from what he could tell after all so it was probably fine if things were like this. He could only vaguely sense once she was done, making out that she was moving away and, far more clearly, hearing that she had done so as well.
His brow furrowed. "The first," he said, "Like I said, not much is organic. It'd probably hurt if anything organic was hurt of course." He didn't bother to point out that it was highly unlikely that that would ever happen. He was fairly sure it was obvious he had very little to anyone who could tell he was a cyborg after all. "And from what I can tell, I was never given the same level of pain receptors as before." Whether that was purposeful or not, he had no clue, but it was sometimes slightly annoying. He didn't really see why it mattered though.

She'd had it all wrong. Sarah Jane could see that now. This was no uber-being. No secret weapon. Who did this to someone? That anger in her rose again. For a moment, there was an image in her mind of her running over that woman with her car. That would work. Better sense got into her a second later. There was no way she would go back now, her job was to save this young man who'd called her for help. "Looks like you're going to make it." She said, a softness to her tone meant to counteract the bluntness of her words. "You just rest for a minute, I have an idea." She was clambering across the drivers side seat and taking hold of the broken Vortex Manipulator that Tobias had produced. Was it the best idea in the world? Probably not. And not much safer than having used him as a shield, but he'd survived that pretty well. In a moment, she was leaning against the car trying to keep an eye on the entrance to the petrol station while she took her sonic screwdriver to the mechanism on it's heavy leather strap. It looked too large for the slender young man. Tobias Hardwick

❧ The answer to Sarah Jane's silent question was probably obvious. The type of people who would have done what had done what had been done to Tobias were people with a lot of hatred in their hearts, hatred that may or may not have been personal. Tobias knew this and, unlike her, he knew this did not narrow down the list in the slightest. Unlike the twenty-first century, he knew the twenty-ninth was not a warm time to live in. A good portion of humans had become colder after they had been forced to rebuild because of the dalek attack centuries ago. By his time period, the scars were clear because humans held a deep loathing towards daleks that sometimes extended to other aliens.
Who would have been willing to sacrifice a single person for some unknown purpose? Tobias didn't know but he also could imagine that there was a list of humans who would do it. Morals were not held up as much as they were in this time. It was why he liked this time more. Such different standards allowed but an easier way to live.
He slowly nodded, not too surprised at the notion that he wasn't harmed in any worrying way. "An idea?" He echoed, somewhat curious about the mention of it but the absolute lack of explanation. She wasn't doing something dangerous was she?
He could tell that she had taken the vortex manipulator, though he had absolutely no idea why. Squinting, he tried to see what she was doing.

Well, she could tell him the first part anyway, and it's not like the rest was set in stone. "I am going to fix this Vortex Manipulator-" Sarah Jane was already starting to do so, Sonic in one hand and said gadget in the other. She'd heard Jack's story about what the Doctor had done for his. Surely, after all these years working with her Sonic, she should be able to do it as well. "I've memorized exactly one galactic coordinate, and it goes to my house." Sarah Jane had to grit her teeth as she cycled up painfully high. Too high. A spark flew out that made her swear, and turn her sonic down again. On the way down, she found a frequency that made it's display flicker with light. She was onto something. "I have a friend there who can help us, and getting out of here fast is going to give us our best chance to give us more time." Though she didn't doubt they'd be found again, hence the second part of her plan. Well, plan A anyway, plan B was also forming in the back of her mind. Tobias Hardwick

❧ A confused expression crossed Tobias' face. "Vortex manipulator?" While the cyborg had been from the future, he had lived a relatively normal life, at least by his society's standards, unlike his own parents. As a result, the knowledge of what something like a vortex manipulator was was beyond him. After all, even beyond his timeline such knowledge was fairly protected, others humans not wanting the general populace to know about the ability to time travel. "Galactic coordinate? What are you talking about?"
For someone from the future, he was starting to feel a bit dumb. Then again, Tobias had never been very smart or ambitious even by this time's standards. Throwing in something as unknown and complicated as time travel? It was probably natural that he would be confused.
His brow furrowed. He didn't understand everything being said, but the general idea was obvious: Ms. Smith desire to go from here to another place. He supposed that was technically possible. His bracelet had done that once. Was that what she was talking about? Though...he couldn't imagine how she would fix it. He had tried that once, only to find it quite difficult.

She was tempted to tease him for his confusion. After all, he'd behaved a bit superior with her when they first met. However, he was effectively wounded, and on her watch no less. Besides, she was starting to realize he was more hardware than she'd guessed before, and that just wasn't fair. For that reason, she answered him seriously as she worked further on the Vortex Manipulator. "Vortex refers to both time and space. It will take two people whever it's set to. It can do a lot of things. One of them is to track particular people like you, but it has a limited range. Thats why we have to get out of here before Laser Lady finds a way to catch up with us."She flinched away with another small spray of sparks, but the entire read out became steady on. "Galactic coordinates can pinpoint anywhere in the galaxy. It's something everyone had to agree upon, really, friend or foe. Then you just tack on the forth dimension and boom. There you are." well, maybe she was teasing a little bit. She grinned at the device when it decided to start working properly. Sarah Jane turned off her sonic. Tobias Hardwick

❧ Tobias' brow furrowed at Sarah Jane's explanation, trying to wrap his head around it as best he could. To some extent, it did not sound too complex. Like he had guessed, it seemed to just be the ability of moving from one place to another, though how he could not begin to guess. He was also sure he did not want to ask. Chances were it was fairly complex and he wasn't sure if Ms. Smith would even know despite her know of this despite. Time and space didn't seem like simple subjects after all. "Track you?" he said, "That doesn't sound like an easy thing to do." Not unless it was within the device itself. "I suppose that's a good idea.
They could only run so far after all. And he was fairly sure she would be able to catch up fairly easily.
He nodded, that part making a bit more sense, though he wasn't sure how there were coordinates. Perhaps that was science mumbojumbo he had never bothered to pay attention to. Tobias had never really enjoyed learning after all. Even before the accident he had never been very ambitious and not help much in the way in plans. Coming to this time made it easier to have none.
