And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ Admittedly, Tobias wasn't sure what to think about being bait. He didn't exactly want to get hurt, especially since, unlike anyone else, he wouldn't exactly heal. In fact, if things went wrong he could end up in an unpleasant situation or, at best, harmed and likely unable to actually heal himself- or so he presumed. He rather doubted there was anyone wandering about in the twenty first century able to help him with such matters after all.
Nonetheless, Sarah Jane did seem to have some sort of plan which allowed for some amount of ease. The only problem was that he didn't exactly understand it. It came across as quite complicated to him, perhaps more so than it needed to be. Then again, he didn't tend to make plans, so what did he know?
He tilted his head. "Yes," he admitted, "Though I'm not sure of how much use that will be. I was taught how to fight against aliens, not humans." That had barely been a problem in his timeline, to be honest. People cared far more about whatever was out there.

Fight. No. She didn't want Tobias to have to fight. What little of him she knew, Sarah Jane understood now that he was fairly fragile. Fragile like a cell phone or a tablet. What good what it have done to include him in the scrabble if it damaged him. What sort of rescue was that. Was this how the Doctor had felt about her? Whatever time constraints led ahead for them, the few moments of conversation her new tact would take, Sarah Jane didn't feel as though it would make the difference between life and death. And who could resist the future? As dangerous as such inquiries her time traveling friend had conveyed to her, she could not resist. Regardless of her age, Sarah Jane flowed down to her haunches beside this boy-man she'd taken on as a ward. Graceful. Effortless. Certainly, it was this life-long habit of running and dashing about that kept her moving like a child of 12. "Tobias, what sort of aliens? Who were they teaching you to fight?"Very dark hazel green brown eyes stared intently into his. Whatever else was happening, it could only be a plus to take this moment to find out what else he knew. And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ It didn't cross Tobias' mind that he might have come across as fragile nor that anyone else might have been worried about a perceived fragility. After all, people had only cared about this to some extent in the future. Naturally, the focus on daleks and other perceived threats have affected some people, lessening their empathy. To some, the price did not always matter so long as the goal was met. Sometimes, these prices were miniscule, people more often willing to be morally grey than morally righteous. But sometimes...sometimes they were willing to do terrible things. Tobias didn't realize it but he was living proof of this fact.
His expression became closed off at the query. While not a naturally suspicious or secretive person, Tobias had some understanding that this question wasn't exactly one he should answer. He didn't exactly have to know about the finer details of time and space to know that Sarah Jane was asking about something a bit...complex, perhaps more complex than she realized. Humans in the future only fought because of something that would happen in approximately a century. He might have not been alive when that happened, but he knew many people would die and the entire structure of human society would change.
You would have to be a moron to not realize that an attack by the daleks that humans had somehow managed to survive would do that. Naturally, admitting that humans in his time period were focused on fighting daleks to a point that they taught it in schools was...probably not the best idea. He didn't know how much Sarah Jane knew about aliens, but it would imply...things and meddling with time didn't exactly sound good in his book. Even if those events were terrible.
And really, between them both, he had a feeling Sarah Jane would be far more tempted to do so. The twenty-second century was far closer to her time, far more real to her, especially if she had family. It wasn't to him. He was barely human and no longer had family.
He eyed her carefully as she knelt to his level. "Aliens in general," he said. It wasn't exactly a lie. Humans were more concerned with daleks, but that didn't exactly mean they were fond of other ones. "People know about them in my time and they don't like them much." A simpler expectation, one that could be taken many ways. It was better than admitting that they specifically hated a species that desired to kill and sought to fight back. There was only one reason you ever would after all. "It's why I like this one."

What a brat, she thought, as he avoided her question. The boy had no idea who he was dealing with. Sarah Jane's mouth straightened into a hard line, her jaw set, and her gaze stiff enough to wither anyone from a teenager to a Sontaran. Her strong jaw gave a thrust as she pushed easily to her feet and turned away from Tobias in her irritation. She walked away, realizing she had neither the time nor the inclination to put the thumb screws to him. However, she couldn't help but show off a bit, wanting him to realize he was dealing with no ordinary person. She may have been short, but was lanky and graceful none the less as she leaned back on Mr.Smith, palms on the computer's broad console, and one ankle crossing over the other. She gave Tobias a look. "Mr. Smith, please check the viability of offsetting our guest's electrical signature to other parts of the house.""Sarah Jane, I'm capable of doing so for increments of 6.3 seconds anywhere inside the house.""Designate that function as 'plan A', I will tell you where at the moment, but if I should be out of contact, randomize location until I declare 'plan B' at which time I want you to synchronize with Tobias' actual location.""Yes, Sarah Jane." She threw her bratty companion a raised eyebrow, pressed away from the computer, and went to the table where K-9 was dismantled. There she picked up a can of WD-40, and went over to Tobias, holding it out to him. "I want you to spray this on the left hand side of the staircase. Enough to be slick, not so much that it's drippingly obvious. Do you think you can manage that?" Her voice held an unavoidable contempt. Tobias Hardwick

❧ The stare didn't do much, though why was entirely arguable. After all, Tobias had severely underplayed what his time was like, refusing to explain that it was less like a world with knowledge about aliens and more of a post-apocalyptical world. There was a distinct difference, one that would have made it clear that Tobias was not exactly someone who wanted to live in ignorance so much as he was someone who didn't want to be forced into a war he had never been asked to be part of. It had been his species who had decided to continue on after they had nearly been destroyed by the Daleks and they responded with hatred.
Tobias wasn't that keen to respond at all. He preferred to enjoy life, not waste it away with work or revenge. What was the point? That was too much work and not enjoyable at all.
Though, he wasn't exactly stupid enough to not realize he had said something wrong. Exactly what that was was beyond him. After all, as far as he was concerned, he was stating facts. He had been taught that this time had not known about aliens. If anyone did, they were, in his book, exceptions.
Brow furrowed, he carefully accepted the can. "What's wrong?" he asked, utterly confused. He didn't think he'd said anything worth such obvious contempt.

Just how much of his brain was computer, and how much of it was wetworks, she was starting to really wonder. It was clear that his body held little of what it had started with, but she'd been assuming that much like a Dalek or a Cyberman, Tobias' brain was mostly intact. This instant as she looked at his confusion and lack of response to her glare, she was reevaluating her assumptions yet again. It was easy to be angry with him, and in fact she was. Still much like she'd learned from a Robot long ago, there was a certain innocence to him. It would do little good to hold a grudge. Sarah Jane was pretty sure it wasn't his fault, and that he was to some degree, just trying to keep up. She took a moment to take a deep breath, look up at the skylight that always soothed her, and scrape her hair back from her face with her fingers. Then she looked back to her tin-man. Oh, he looked so very human, but she reminded herself that he was only human in part and it wouldn't do either of them any good to play word games with him. "Since I all but fished you out of the Thames, I've only asked one thing of you. To answer a simple question. I don't understand why you didn't answer it. If you're worried about a Time Paradox, well, I know all about those. Or is it that you're embarrassed? Were you made by the same Aliens that are invading Earth in your time? I do not understand your reluctance. Can you at least tell me that before you go spray the stairs?"
She didn't want him to think he'd get out of that duty by distracting her with his reluctance. Tobias Hardwick

❧ The problem, though it was admittedly not even one that Tobias himself realized entirely, was not so much the metal. It was easy to blame the fact that the human had little to him that was truly organic, but what really defined humanity? Was it flesh and bones? Certainly not. If that were the case every person with a prosthetic would have been considered a monster and that was hardly reality. If anything it was behavior and it was probably hard to tell with Tobias if anything had been done to change him.
No, if anything, the problem had far more to do with truths about who he was as a person, things that might be far harder for someone who was not as familiar with his time to pick up on. Especially when he was not so keen to admit them.
"Yes, I did," he refuted, hardly understanding where this was coming from, "You asked what sort of aliens." Okay, so maybe he lied, but it wasn't a big one. They had technically been taught about all sorts. There had just been a rather big focus he didn't want to talk about.
His expression quickly changed, becoming something far angrier than when they had first met. "I wasn't made by aliens. Humans did this to me," he snapped. While he didn't lash out, it was the first sign of something dark lurking beneath the surface. "To be frank, I don't want to tell you much about my time. It's very different from this time for a reason. Even the humans in my time are quite different. In a huge cultural way due to horrific events that, to my understanding, are much closer to your time than mine."

" 'Aliens in general' is not an answer!" Perhaps she had shouted a bit, but she was annoyed. In the next moment, as the man-boy's face twisted into anger, she found herself a bit stunned. To be sure, she managed to mostly cover her reaction but gripping hard at Mr.Smith's console, bracing herself. For the first time, Tobias looked dangerous. Even if he was only as strong as a human, he was both taller and younger than she was. The boy-man certainly had her attention this moment as he spewed forth his reasoning, bitter and defensive. Hearing that it was Humans that had done this to him explained a lot. It was one thing to have such a thing done to him by aliens, it was something worse to know it was your own kind. Frankly, if the same thing had been done to her, she probably would have jumped off London Bridge. Sarah Jane's breath was a little ragged at the vitriol of Tobias' rant, but she did her best to hide it, steadying the butterflies in her chest before answering. She gave a little shake of her head, still annoyed but refusing to fear him, just in case he was stronger than your average cell phone. "You have no idea when 'my time' is." She scooped up the WD-40, walked right over to him and scooped up his hand just as deftly, pressing the can into it. "I'm going to get you out of this. Now, take this, and go spray the left side of the stairs without stepping in it. Go. I have things to do and I need this done."Tobias Hardwick

❧ It wasn't often that Tobias got angry. The cyborg was a relatively chill person, perhaps a bit too much. However, he could feel himself already growing annoyed as Sarah Jane snapped at him. "It is when that's what I was taught!" he grouched. Perhaps he might have only stayed annoyed had she not suggested that his current state of being was because of aliens. Technically, he knew it was likely said out of ignorance or, at worst, confirmation bias. After all, he wasn't entirely sure if Sarah Jane actually viewed him as he saw himself. He might have been clinging to his humanity but it was entirely possible that she had never really moved on from how he was a cyborg.
And that was what made the suggestion annoying. Because the answer was something he loathed. It wasn't an easy answer like daleks or some other alien race who had clearly not thought much of humans. It had been other humans who had taken advantage of him when he was weak. They hadn't cared about his opinion and he didn't know much about what they'd done to him. Apparently, they still weren't done with him if his current situation was anything to go by.
Those people were monsters, more so than any single alien he'd been taught about.
"Right," he said flatly, "Then maybe you should bother explaining things about yourself instead of demanding I give you a life story you seem aware might be dangerous to give." He was getting sick of all these jabs about how little he knew. He knew he wasn't the smartest person, but he was certainly not as dumb as she was treating him. Everything she was pointing out was ignorance, an ignorance that could not be helped because this was his second time meeting Ms. Smith and thus far she had seemed just as keen as before to say next to nothing about herself but ask all the questions about him. He wasn't sure he liked that.
Only half-listening, he practically stormed away to the stairs, annoyance still running through him. He doubted that would happen near Ms. Smith right now and he wasn't even sure that would happened today. Today was just...terrible and it seemed like the only inevitably right now was spraying stairs.

Stars, she could just strangle him. Strangle him because he was right to a degree, she realized as she listened to his rant. Sarah Jane was just used to the Bannerman Street Gang doing what she said when she said it. And there just wasn't time. She's wasted too much time on this already. In her mind, he'd just pop out the answer and get them right back on track. No such luck. At the end of his rant, she simply pointed most pointedly at the door to the stairs. As he left, Sarah Jane leaned back on Mr.Smith, taking what cold support she could. She pressed her hands to her face. How had the Doctor been so good at winning people over? Oh, she was just swell at flirting her way into people's hearts, or intimidating them, but those factors just we not going to work on Tobias. She scraped red brown hair back from her face with her fingers, then pushed away from her computer. "Mr.Smith?""Yes Sarah Jane?""Plan C. Confine Tobias in your shield if I call it." To protect him? To confine him? Right now she didn't know, but she wanted the option open to her at the utterance of just a couple of words that would not tip the human/cyborg off. Tobias Hardwick

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ Tobias was beginning to recall exactly why he had wanted a simple life. People became a lot more difficult to deal with when you were doing things other than reading or lazing about. This was especially true when you had to fight. There always seemed to be positions, whether they were spoken about or not. Perhaps it was why he was so alone. He should have had the perfect opportunity to make friends here, but he hadn't managed to make those. Instead, he'd stuck to himself and only interacted to people who were up to no good.
Or maybe that was just because he had trouble trusting people even here. People always had trouble trusting that which was different. Those in his time had been taught to hate specific things, had learned what specific aliens had done and hated them for it. The people here didn't know much about aliens, to his understanding, but it was hard to accept that anyone might accept him as the same as them. To accept that he had been human and that any of that was still there despite so much metal.
Trying to not think much on it, he took to the stairs and began spraying the left side.

Things were getting tricky. it was rare that Sarah Jane found herself at such physical odds with a human. A human from elsewhen, but human none the less. Not the boy, Ms.Laser. It wasn't as if she could kill her. She couldn't even jail her. Pacing around the Attic, she didn't actually have to sort through drawers and in closets to inventory what she had. She tapped her thumbnail on her bottom lip, her mind doing the sorting. The Dogon Eye? Make the woman examine her life and . . .become a better person? It did it's best work when swallowed, but at nearly the size of a golf ball that seemed rather unrealistic. The Graske Teleporter gun? No, sending the woman to Limbo would be too much like killing her. Sarah Jane thought through item after item, only to find them either useless in this situation, or effectively a death sentence. Very annoying. She couldn't even use an EM pulse. It would probably disarm the woman, but what would it do to Tobias? And she was going to need that Vortex Manipulator. A plan was forming, but it was pretty thin so far. Setting her jaw, she did cross the room and start getting her small safe open. Tobias Hardwick

❧ The time he seemed to spend at his task was fairly helpful at the least. It might have felt like busy work- and chances were it was- but it was mindless enough that the cyborg could focus on it and forget about the previous conversation. He wasn't sure how much time had passed by the time he was done. Standing up and stepping away from it, he gave it a quick glance over.
Deciding he was satisfied with it, he began to head back. "Hey," he said, his tone more careful now but certainly not angry, "I'm done." Exactly what he was expected to do now he had no idea. Nothing, maybe? It was hard to tell.

The KAHR-P380 was heavier in her hand than it actually weighed. She was slapping the full clip into it when Tobias called out to her. With a small sigh, she realized she didn't want Ms.Laser blowing up her door. "Unlock the front door, and come on up." she shouted down at him. Sarah Jane slipped a pill into her pocket, and closed the safe. The little pistol went into her other pocket. Just on time, she realized, as Mr.Smith piped up. "Sarah Jane I detect a Vortex Manipulator within 10 meters of the house." "Got it.""Hurry!" She shouted "Spit spot!" An idea came to her last minute as they always did, and she went to her full length mirror, hefting it with a sudden rush of adrenaline, and put it at an angle across from the door. As the man/boy/cybercreation came through the attic door, she grabbed him by the shoulders. She moved him about, objections or not, to just about the right place with a tug and shove. "Stay here. If things get bad, you duck down behind that file cabinet, hear?" She was barely in time, hearing the door below open none to delicately. She was coming, and honing in on them all to quickly. Then there was a painful ka-bump and tumble. Just enough time for Sarah Jane to get into the doorway herself, check the angle of the mirror, and dash back to change the angle just a bit. She could clearly see Tobias in the reflection. Would the laser bounce and hit him? Sarah Jane hoped that she could forestall that outcome if it came to be. It was worth the bet because it was all she had. Quickly, she tucked herself to the right of the Attic door, pulling the pistol from her pocket. She could hear swearing from below, and it was coming quickly closer. Tobias Hardwick

❧ At Sarah Jane's answer, he began to head to the door. It was only after he had entered it and locked it that he heard her call out again. Frowning, he gave a quick tug at the door before turning around and heading up as quickly as possible. As the cyborg came through the attic door, he stiffened as she grabbed him by the shoulders. A confused look crossed his face as she moved him in a decidedly rough manner.
Slowly, he gave a nod. There didn't seem to be a moment for him to say anything as the sound of door roughly being opened could be heard from below. Quietly, he made sure to keep to himself as Sarah Jane moved away, curling in on himself as best as possible. Nervousness filled him as it became clearer and clearer that his pursuer was coming closer and closer.
