"Not track me down, track you down. I suppose I might stand out enough to be scanned for, but they'd never guess what for." She looked down at him, the poor sod. "I'm afraid you're the prize they're looking for, and they already know how to find you. Whoever Laser Lady is, I'm certain she knows how to use one of these things better than I do. I wouldn't begin to know how to use it as a tracker, but I can get us back to my place. Can you stand up?"Sarah Jane reached into the car and took ahold of one of his arms, ready to give him a pull. And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ Tobias shook his head. "No, no. I got that." He had figured she had meant whoever used the bracelet. After all, that seemed like the most logical way to do it. People could do that now after all. Chances were the technology could have just become more advanced at some point, presuming it was even human technology to begin with. He only guessed it was since Ms. Smith knew about it...then again she did seem to know a bit about things most would not. "You meant whoever uses it, right?"
A confused look crossed his face at the mention of her standing out. "What?" That sounded a bit odd to him. From what he could tell, she seemed to be a normal human to him, but then Tobias could hardly realize that anything that caused Sarah Jane to stand out would have never been built in to him. Most humans, even in the twenty-ninth century, were not particularly well-versed in the effects that time and space travel had on a person after all. "Well, that's a bit obvious. I doubt she wants anything on my person. Moreover, everything about it was...odd." He'd been suggested to go to her, something which, now that he thought about it, was a bit odd.
He nodded. Before he could attempt to do so on his own, Sarah Jane had taken ahold of one of his arms. With her help, he carefully made his way up to his feet.

"No, Tobias." She answered, explaining to him as best she could as she loomed over him, getting the VM snugly up high on her forearm. "She's not tracking the Vortex Manipulator. If she was, I would have thrown it out the window. Laser Lady is tracking you. Your unique physiognomy -" He seemed confused so she tried again. "The metal. This metal you're made of. Thats why we have to get out of here. The elements you're made of are from here on Earth, but I've never seen a mixture like yours before. You have an electrical signature as well . . .an energy that doesn't look like anything else from this time."Tobias was moving a bit slowly but steadily enough as she helped lever him to his feet. Then she took him by the shoulders and moved him out of the way so she could shut the doors on the Figaro. She hoped it would still be here when she got back, but when the house was on fire, one did not fuss over the loss of the linens. "What was odd?" she asked him, leaning on her door again so she could keep one eye on the traffic. Even though Sarah Jane had an Alien computer, an iPhone and a robot dog that was excellent at taking voice memo's, if you looked deep in her mind, there was a rolodex that held a rather amazing array of information. It had taken her a couple of weeks to imbue one of those cards with the galactic coordinates to her house, and they were well set in. She started programing the Vortex Manipulator. Sarah Jane's jaw was set, her dark gaze intense as her eyes flickered to the drive, the numbers, and the man-boy beside her. She was getting an awful lot done at once. Tobias Hardwick

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ A confused expression crossed his face and he briefly glanced down to look down at one of his arms. The immediate explanation didn't exactly help. He could understand that he was probably unique. After all, even he hadn't heard of any other human cyborgs running around, whether in this time or his own. However, the notion of how someone might be doing that was a bit beyond him. To his understanding, he had basically been thrown away. How would there be any way to track him?
"Well, yes," he said slowly, not immediately picking up what likely should have been obviously, "But that's probably just because I'm from the twenty-ninth century. People had become very good at building things by then." He gave a thoughtful tilt of the head. "She probably knows that too since I-" He paused, frowning, things suddenly clicking into place. "...Oh."
He didn't object as he was effectively maneuvered out of the way. "Oh...well, I only went there because I needed work. She came up as a suggestion, though I didn't really want to accept anything until I had actually met her." He kept the specifics of why to himself. He hadn't exactly told Ms. Smith that he didn't do anything legal after all and he wasn't keen to see the reaction he'd get for that. "Kind of odd, really. You'd need to be around awhile to have people suggesting you." He could imagine any of that was good stuff if she'd been after him.

"Hmmm" she acknowledged everything he said, inputing the last of the integers to get them back to her place. "Well, that explains a few things." They had more to talk about, but now was not the the time. Those months ago, in their conversation over Guy Fawkes day, it had not gone past her notice that this young fellow was a bit of a non-traditionalist about his sexuality. She wasn't sure exactly how, but whatever it was might have some effect on this next step of her plan. Sarah Jane tried to think of all the angles her young proteges had been sharing with her, for the best solution It wasn't as if in a million years this man-boy of a cyborg was of any interest romantically for her 60-something year old self, but she didn't want to make him uncomfortable. Then again, they were against the clock. Without further ado, she tucked herself under Tobias' arm. She could apologize later if need be for the familiarity. "Hang on to me and your shoelaces, kid, here we go." In tight against him, she launched the program with one last button. Travel by Vortex Manipulator was never pleasant, but after one swirly sickening moment, she found herself and her target patient in her very own Attic. She half let go of Tobias, but half held on, not wanting to topple him in disorientation even as she tripped to the side a little bit, wishing there had been an easier way. Sarah Jane Smith's attic was something indeed. Clearly part of a solid structure of brick, it was a half organized space rife with Knicknacks from a double dozen worlds, and surprisingly handy, even deadly gadgets in sight. Photos from many a space and time. Corks boards had hand papers with writing on them and red yarn linked from here to there with pushpins. On the table was something that could almost look like a robot dog, one side panel open with strange wiring and components sort of spilled out that side. Sarah Jane rather wished to spill her own insides as she stood there holding on to Tobias, but main determination and experience was helping her stay solid. Tobias Hardwick

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ Tobias slowly nodded. He supposed if there was something unusual about how he had been made and the fact that she could recognize it that it did make some sense. After all, these were not things that someone around now or before would have recognized. These were, at least to his understanding, someone in the future or beyond Earth could have probably understood. Nobody now could make things like this...well, not unless they were not from Earth. However, he had no idea how likely it was for an alien to pop up on Earth. It didn't seem likely. The only large occurrence he knew of would not happen for an entire century.
Though, Ms. Smith sounded like she meant a bit more than what he was thinking of. He couldn't imagine how that could be. What else was there? Or was he overthinking it? Sigh. He did so hate thinking. He hoped nothing like this happened anytime soon, or ever again more preferably.
He admittedly didn't like being treated like something to be lugged about. However, nothing more crossed his mind except that. "I'm not a kid," he grumbled, only now seeming to grow tired of how he was being called. Yes, Ms. Smith was clearly much older but it wasn't like he was a child. And if he looked a little young? Well, he hadn't exactly chosen the changes to his body. Nonetheless, he tightly help onto her.
He had forgotten how terrible the feeling of traveling by vortex manipulator had been. In fact, he wasn't even sure he had been aware of what the feeling was like the first it had happened. After all, he had been so terribly angry when it had happened he had barely paid attention to what was going on. It was definitely, despite him not being too human physically anymore, an assault on his senses. A grimace crossed his face.
After a moment, he began looking around. They were...well, he wasn't exactly sure, to be honest. He didn't recognize much of what was here but a fair amount looked like things Ms. Smith should not have had, let alone known existed. After a moment, he decided that it looked like the room someone in one of the stories he had read might have stayed in. He wasn't sure if that was bad or good.
His gaze flickered to her after a long moment, a frown crossing his face. "Are you alright?" he asked, recognizing that she didn't seem entirely okay.

She realized that instead of holding Tobias up, she was grabbing on to him for stability as the room took a spin and her gut complained. Annoyingly, and most interestingly, Tobias seemed fine. Sarah Jane let go of him and put both hands over her tum as it settled down, all the while she was finding her feet. "I'm just peachy." She reassured him, though she was sure that the smile on her face was somewhat reflecting the sourness in her stomach. After a couple of breaths that she wished her new ward was not a privy to, Sarah Jane straightened up. She turned and patted the young man reassuringly on the shoulder. "Mr.Smith!" She called, to apparently no one. "I need you!"Jets of coolent suddenly jetted in the room from for directions, and a brick wall was suddenly shifted into motion, opening up to reveal a wide fluctuating monitor display and a key board that pushed out a little into the room. There was more than just a keyboard though, a variety of colored, glowing buttons that were now open to display. "Hello Sarah Jane." the thing said, in warm, inquisitive tones. "How can I assist you?"Sarah Jane looked over at her 'innocent' wondering exactly which path she was going to take. It was easy to assume he'd approve of neither of them. But there was work to be done. Tobias Hardwick

❧ Tobias wasn't particularly surprised that he was not as bothered as Ms. Smith appeared to be. After all, they were, whether he wished to admit it or not, very different. There was little about the cyborg that was human anymore on a physical level. As a result, he couldn't help but be a but skeptical at the answer he had gotten in reply. Even he had felt a bit off-kilter from the trip and he imagined that Ms. Smith felt much worse than he had. The fact her smile seemed a bit off seemed to show that. "Right," he said, his tone betraying his doubt.
He briefly considered whether to push the issue but chose not to as the female seemed to be fine within a short few moments. Besides, from what he could tell, she didn't seem to be in any serious need of help.
He blinked owlishly as she called someone. Curious, his gaze flickered around, expecting a person to show up. Though, that seemed to be a bit impossible since no one appeared to be around. Surprise crossed his face as the wall shifted and opened up to reveal a monitor. How interesting. Was this some sort of AI?
He blinked owlishly as he realized that Sarah Jane was staring at him, as if in answer. "What?

Her discomfort passed soon enough. Sarah Jane certainly had enough on her mind to distract her. Is this how the Doctor had felt? Knowing that the right way wasn't always the safe way when they faced something together? Tobias had caught her staring at him as she weighed the risks. Would she trap him unwittingly in Mr.Smith's force shield? Scan him without asking? Tuck him safely there, just in case this was some sort of set up? No. It would only slow down the inevitable. The plan she'd settled on for better or for worse. "Mr.Smith, how large a boundary can you make that would keep out someone traveling by Vortex Manipulator?" Sarah Jane asked, still staring at Tobias, sizing him up. "Sarah Jane, I can only just cover the house. Wall to wall, cellar to attic. I estimate that the power usage for such a task will overheat the house electrical circuits in approximately 2 hours and 16 minutes.""Do it." she said shortly. "Configuring.""Tobias, whoever is after you, they're not the only one. That was no scientist with a laser gun. That was someone hired. We have to capture her. We're going to use you as bait."

❧ A sliver of worry filled Tobias as he seemed to not receive an answer. Instead, Ms. Smith's attention went to the monitor. His brow furrowed as he listened to the conversations. None of this was surprising. After all, she had explained that he was being tracked and they needed to go elsewhere to avoid this. However, he did get the feeling he was missing something. It seemed a bit natural considering they hadn't yet spoken about what they would do after. It wasn't like he could hide here for forever. That was even more clear about the fact that this boundary that was being talked about would disappear apparently.
A confused look crossed his face. "Hired?" he echoed. Why would someone hire a person to capture him? He couldn't imagine why. Then again, the world was simple in the cyborg's mind, perhaps a bit more simple than it was in reality. "...Bait?" He eyed Sarah Jane hesitantly. "What do you mean?"

It was painful. His innocence. Sarah Jane scraped her hair away from her face with a hand through her scalp and looked away. Poor mite. Sarah Jane looked back to him and briefly laid her hands on his shoulders. Then she turned away. Mr.Smith could have evaluated Tobias' electrical signatures and hidden them for a time. She wasn't about to do that though. If she had hidden him for an hour or a day, the results would be the same. She wasn't about to let the young man's fears drive her choices "Look. Sometimes the best way to figure out what is going on is to get caught. Ms.Laser is going to find you one way or another, so it's best that it is on our terms. We let her find us, then we find out who is paying her. Follow the money.""I swear I'll take care of you. Mr.Smith, turn on the containment field."And there it was, a swirling rainbow of light that came down, cone-shaped, from somewhere overhead. It sketched out a circle on the floor. "We can catch her in this, and find out what she's up to, and end this at the source. But first we'll have to get her to just this spot." "Sarah Jane, with the containment field on, I can only protect the center 50% of the house.""Mr.Smith, turn that off and go back to shielding the house. Be ready for me to ask you to switch priorities. Tobias, do you understand?"

And while you are sitting indoors waiting for the storm to pass I will be outside dancing in the rain
❧ It was probably true that for someone from the twenty-ninth century, particularly someone in his thirties, Tobias was a bit innocent. People from his time were admittedly built a bit different than humans from this time. They were jaded and colder, having grown just a bit less enchanted with what was beyond Earth because of the damage the daleks had done to them. Knowledge, predictably, came at a price and that was often innocence.
However, the cyborg had admittedly always lacked qualities that just could not be learned, no matter how different Earth's education, culture, and goals became. There was simply something...lazy about him. Tobias had never been driven to be ambitious. He had never wanted to be doctors like his parents or any other grand job he had often heard children chatter about. This had not changed as he grew up. He simply wanted to be, to enjoy life and laugh.
But, you couldn't do that in a world that was so worried about the beyond that it only strove to continue the next step to protect, never considering what was already there and around them.
His gaze flickered to her hands as they touched his shoulders, a frown crossing his face as she turned away. It didn't cross his mind that he might be being pitied. Why would he? Pity was slightly foreign, at least when compared to the amount of knowledge those in this time had about it. "I know that," he noted, "That's how people liked to do things back home." There were probably specifics he'd been taught at some point, but Tobias had never exactly paid attention to these things. He'd enjoyed sleeping through classes than actually learning. "I was wondering how we'd do that."
He rather liked living after all.
He watched with interest as a rainbow of light came down. His eyes flickered about, taking a moment to adjust to the constant. His brow furrowed as he listened. "...No," he said after a moment, "All I really got was that we're getting her to this spot and that I'm apparently bait." Admittedly, he didn't really get the conversation between Ms. Smith and the monitor. He knew that there was supposed to be a shield, but now there wasn't?
Did plans need to be this complex? It hurt his brain.

How much to tell him, she wondered. Could she shield him from being found? Yes she could if she put him in Mr.Smith's containment system. How long could someone wait in such a small and unforgiving space? Theoretically, quite a while. But that wasn't her plan. If she was going to let Ms.Laser find him, it might as well be sooner than later. "Well, here is the exciting part." Sarah Jane's smile was entirely previsional, an such confusion showed on her face. "Before we get her to the containment field., we'll have to get her Vortex Manipulator comes in. We have to get it off of her before we trap her. I'm going to need your help How well did you do in school, Tobias?"Her question was deadly serious. Tobias Hardwick

❧ A doubtful look crossed Tobias' face at the mention that anything Sarah Jane was about to say might be exciting. After all, this entire conversation didn't seem too exciting. "Makes sense," he said slowly. They didn't want her going anywhere, right? That would be easier if she didn't have the vortex manipulator. Then she would have to do it the old fashioned way- or as old fashioned as you could get when you were from the future anyway.
He gave an owlish blink at the seemingly random question before shrugging. "I don't know," he said carelessly. That was admittedly awhile back after all. "Not very well, I guess. It isn't like I was learning anything important- just blather about aliens and how to fight." And whatever else humans thought was important to the fight against aliens. "Why?"

It had been a wrong assumption that because he was from the future and made out of what must be some rather sophisticated electronics (for lack of a better word) that he might be useful at helping fix K-9. Her robot dog would have been quite handy in this situation. Not that she was ready to kill a human being, however dastardly, with his laser. However, K-9 did have rather good aim and might at least be able to threaten or disarm her. Sarah Jane looked around rather aimlessly, tapping her thumbnail against her front teeth for a moment as she did sometimes when thinking deeply. Well, she'd have to work with what she had. She turned on her heel, eyebrows raising up as she caught the young man's gaze again. At least he seemed to be taking the idea of being bait fairly in stride. Sarah Jane had been a bit worried about loosing his trust with that one. "When you were learning to fight, did you also learn how to make booby traps?"Tobias Hardwick
